    Two Worlds Collide: Chapter 10

    Chapter 10:

Alex listened as Bette mumbled words that seemed to amount to I dont know what to say From what Alex could deduct from Bettes obvious speechlessness, Tina had just told her something big.

So then what? Were you just not going to tell me? Bette asked once she was able to form a full sentence.

I was going to tell you once I knew the baby would survive. That would have been about a month ago if you hadnt you know.

    Right.

Bette, its yours too, if you still want it.

T, you know what Joyce would say, Bette did her best to do a Joyce Wischnia impression, A baby further complicates an already complicated situation.

Tina tried to hold back her laughter, Bette I know it does.

I do still want to have a baby with you.

Why dont I make an appointment with Dan Foxworthy and Ill call you back tomorrow?

    Ok, that sounds good T.

All right, Ill, um, talk to you tomorrow then.

    I love you T.

Tina paused before saying anything. Knowing that she wanted to say the same thing back to Bette just made this reconciliation or whatever they were doing harder. I know Bette, she finally replied, Oh, and dont tell anyone about the baby, ok?

Yeah. Ill keep your secret. But honestly, in three months itll be a little hard to keep.

This time she couldnt stifle her laughter. Bye Bette.

    Bye.

Once Bette had hung up the phone, she turned to find Alex watching her. She jumped back a little, Jesus! How long have you been standing there?

    Long enough, replied Alex.

So you heard, Bette said as she cautiously approached the still wet girl.

    About the baby? Yeah, congratulations.

Im not really the one you should be congratulating. Look, no one else knows so

I wont tell anyone, Alex said, a smile growing on her face, I promise.

Bette studied Alex for a moment. Whether it was the twinkle in her eyes or the smile on her face, Bette could tell she was sincere, and a little wet. Why are you wet?

Marissa and I went swimming. Were having a party next door, you should come.

I dont know. Bette said. She wasnt really in the partying mood.
