Chapter 16- ICE ICE BABY!

 

            Shane stepped in to Alex shaking, sweating and whimpering uncontrollably. He ran over to the teens bedside and kneeled down. Hermes whimpered and rested his head on the bed. Shane rubbed Alex’s forehead. She was really hot.

 

Shane: Alex?

 

Alex: MOM!

 

Shane: CARMEN!

 

Shane started to cry.

 

Shane: Alex, don’t worry we’ll get you help.

 

Shane got on the bed and pulled off the comforter and Alex’s shirt, hoping to cool her down. She screamed in desperation.

 

Shane: CARMEN!!!

 

She heard the bed in the other room squeak.

 

Carmen: I’m coming, I’m coming.

 

Shane: Call 911!

 

Then, Carmen ran into the room, grabbing her cell on the way out of her room. She walked in and saw Her daughter covered in sweat and shaking as if she was having drug withdrawals. She flipped the phone open. Shane sat down and pulled Alex’s head into her lap. She pulled her hair back and Alex coughed. Shane saw blood trickle out of the side of her mouth.

 

Shane: Alex, it’s gonna be okay!

 

Carmen turned around and kneeled at the bed’s level.

 

Carmen: They’re on their way.

 

She looked up at Shane, worried. Carmen got up to get a towel and some ice. Shane broke down, looking down at Alex. She lowered herself to Alex’s face and hugged her from behind, pressing her cheek to Alex’s forehead.

 

Shane: I can’t lose you.

 

Alex cried, needing the comfort. Carmen walked in and started to pat Alex down with the ice.

 

            Carmen and Shane sat in the hospital waiting area, they had been there for 3 hours now. Shane had stopped crying and then Carmen had started. But now, they both had calmed down. A doctor walked out and up to them.

 

Dr: Alex is going to be just fine. We ran some tests and found out that her appendix was punctured when she had that accident. It became infected when it healed. She has a minor disease. A tablet a day should take care of that.

 

Carmen: Wait, can’t she just have the appendix taken out?

 

Dr: Well yes, but unless she has another fit like that today, it would be highly unnecessary.

 

Shane: How long does she have to stay?

 

Dr: I just want to keep her over night, just to keep an eye on her. Alright?

 

Carmen nodded.

 

Shane: Thank you doctor.

 

Dr: No problem, if you have any questions, just have the receptionist page me.

 

The doctor left and Carmen turned to Shane.

 

Carmen: Only one of us can stay.

 

Shane: Why?

 

Carmen: We have a new puppy at home, remember?

 

Shane: Oh, right umm.

 

Carmen: Go on home, I’ll stay, you need your rest. Besides, last time you never left. My turn now.

 

Shane: But…

 

Carmen: No buts, come in, say hi, then go!

 

Shane: Alright, fine!

 

They walked into Alex’s room. Alex was awake, flipping through the TV channels.

 

Carmen: Hey!

 

She looked up and smiled as her parents walked in. Shane sat on the edge of the bed and Carmen took the chair.

 

Shane: How you feeling?

 

Alex: Kinda lousy.

 

Carmen: Are you alright?

 

Alex: I meant about staying here tonight.

 

Shane laughed. Carmen cleared her throat.

 

Shane: Oh right, um I need to go home, against my will to watch the dog.

 

Alex groaned.

 

Carmen: I’m staying.

 

Alex looked over at Shane.

 

Carmen: What? Your Madre can be just as fun as Shane.

 

Alex: If only that was true.

 

Carmen scowled and Shane kissed Alex’s forehead.

 

Shane: Be nice to your Madre, and I will see you tomorrow morning.

 

Alex: G/night!

 

Shane: Good night.

 

Shane went over and kissed Carmen.

 

Shane: I love you, both of you.

 

Alex: Yeah, yeah we love you too.

 

Shane started to walk out.

 

Alex: mom?

 

Shane turned around.

 

Shane: Yeah?

 

Alex: Thanks, for everything.

 

Shane: No problem.

 

She then kept walking out.
