    Too Late, Ch. 5

She walked unsteadily for two feet before suddenly, everything went black and she collapsed onto the ground in a heap.

“Her game is really off today,” Alice noted, reaching across Shane and sticking her hand into a bag of potato chips in Carmen’s lap.  Pulling out her hand and seeing nothing but crumbs, she uttered an indignant, “Hey!”

Carmen grinned at her impishly and balled up the empty bag.

“Don’t worry, we have more,” Tina said, getting up to hurry to the kitchen.

“Hurry up.  You don’t want to miss anything,” Bette said, her eyes on the screen.

“I will, I will,” Tina called out reassuringly from the kitchen.

“Something doesn’t look right,” Shane said slowly, leaning forward as Dana lurched jerkily toward the ball.

A collective gasp filled the room as Dana fell and didn’t get up.

“What happened?” Tina screeched, hurrying back into the room, dropping the unopened bag of chips when she saw Dana on the television.

“She fell,” Jenny answered unnecessarily, grabbing Mark’s hand and squeezing tightly, causing him to wince.

Bette scrambled for the remote, turning the volume up.  They watched in hushed silence as Dana managed to stand and walk away.

“She’s walking.  She must be okay,” Kit whispered, digging her fingernails into the arm of the chair.

The group gasped again as Dana suddenly collapsed to the ground and didn’t get up.  They watched as the medics loaded her onto the stretcher and then loaded her onto the ambulance that had driven onto the courts.  The ambulance then left the screen, its lights flashing and sirens blaring.

“Oh my God,” Carmen muttered, hand over her mouth.

“We have to go so her.  Right now.  We have to go to Vegas,” Alice said suddenly, a lost expression on her face.  Helena laid a reassuring hand on her arm, which Alice shook off.  “I’m serious.  Something’s wrong.  She needs us, you guys.”

“I can get us plane tickets,” Helena said suddenly, looking up.  “I can just make a few calls and we can be on a plane as soon as possible.

“Helena, we can’t accept that,” Tina began to say.

“No, no, don’t worry about it.  “I’ll just call in some favors.  I’ve got it all taken care of,” Helena insisted.

“Fine, fine, whatever.  Come on, we can’t just sit here!  Let’s go!” Alice practically shouted, jumping up and heading for the door.
