    Too Late, Ch. 4

“You wouldn’t be laughing if you had to put up with her doom and gloom,” Kit grumbled, trying not to laugh herself.

“Thanks for watching out for her, Kit,” Carmen said, laying a hand on the older woman’s shoulder.  “If you can just help us, we’ll try to get her out to the car.”

Working carefully, the trio managed to lift the slumbering Dana up, getting her over Shane’s shoulder.  When they had settled her there, Dana let out a mumble and pushed her face into Shane’s back before letting out another little snore.

“She’d be so pissed if she could see herself now,” Shane commented as she strained to hold up Dana’s weight.  “Drunk and asleep with her ***** stuck straight up in the air – she’d be so embarrassed.”

They managed to slip her into the backseat of the car, where she slid down, almost onto the floorboard.  Carmen struggled to push her into a more comfortable position on the seat, where Dana immediately curled up into a ball.

“Make sure she gets home safely,” Kit advised, shaking her head.

“Thanks, Kit.  She really owes you one.  I hope she knows that,” Shane said, walking around the car.

“Hey, take it easy on her when she wakes up, okay?” Kit told her, thinking back to Dana’s earlier admission.  She had to struggle to keep from telling Shane and Carmen the whole thing.  Dana would tell them in her own time, or so Kit hoped.  I’ve got half a mind to call Bette right now and fill her in on this, but it’s not my business.

Waving goodbye, Shane and Carmen pulled away from the curb.

Dana awoke groggily, staring around her in confusion.  Where the ***** am I?  She sat up blearily, rubbing sleep from her eyes.  After several disoriented moments, she realized she was on the couch in Shane and Jenny’s living room.  Squinting at her watch, she saw it was a little before five in the morning.

Wincing as she sat up, throwing the sheet off of her body, she saw her shoes sitting neatly by the couch.  Dana hissed in pain as she bent over for them, her pounding head reminding her of last night’s drinking.

She somehow managed to get her shoes on and folded the sheet carefully, laying it back on the couch.  Finding a sheet of paper, she scribbled the word “thanks” down and set the paper atop the blanket.

As she quietly slipped out the front door, Dana realized that this getting drunk and slipping out of people’s houses in the middle of the night thing was becoming a bit of a habit.

“Ah, *****,” Shane cursed, scratching her head sleepily as she saw the empty couch.  Picking up the note, she read it, then said aloud wryly, “You’re welcome, Dane.”

Carmen came up behind her and noticed Dana’s absence, and the frustrated look on Shane’s face.  Wordlessly, she wrapped her arms around her lover from behind, squeezing her tightly.  Shane sighed and leaned back against her.

“All right, I’m gonna do this whole chemo thing,” Dana announced as soon as Dr. Fry entered the room.

“Well, that’s good to hear.  I’ve already talked to someone with the oncology department, and they’re ready for you now,” the doctor replied with a smile.
