    Tina, Tiny Pieces Chapter 8

    What time are they coming?

    Around 6.

    Who are they, again?

I rub my forehead.  My head pounds, though Im not hung over.  I methodically spoon rice cereal into Angels mouth.  I gently tickle her chin. He stands at the counter, sipping his coffee, staring at me coldly.

A guy I work with, his wife and a couple they know.  And their kids.

    How many kids?

    Three or four.  Why?

No reason.  I was looking forward to a quiet day, a quiet night at home but if –

Yeah, I suppose you got your ya-yas out til 3 in the morning last night so you need a day to sleep it off, huh?

Don’t pick a fight, Henry.  Im not in the mood.

What are you in the mood for, Tina?

    What?

You come in late last night, hell this morning.  You slink into the room, I try and touch you, figuring maybe we can … make up and you’re as cold as a fucking fish.

I was exhausted, it was late, give me a break.

How about you give me a break?

    What?

When was the last time we even had anything approaching sex, Tina?

    I don’t know, I haven’t been keeping score.

Yeah, well I have.  Lesbos one, husband nothing.

I shoot him a withering look.  He glares back.  Angel shifts in her chair, she bangs her hand on the tray.

Look, I’m gonna have to go to the store since I have to cook.  Do you need anything?

Besides a wife who acts like she’s married?  Nope, nothing.

I glare at him.  I feel sorry for him.  I wipe Angels face, I lift her up out of her chair.  Shes tense, rigid in my arms.  Weve been fighting too much, he and I.  It has to stop.  I wish I could make it stop.

I should be back in a couple of hours.

Sure.  You probably need to make a few stops, huh?

As he motions west with his head, he smirks but his eyes are sad.

You know, on the other side of town?

    1. Ages, stages, gauges, mages (I’m a bit of a gamer so I had to say this one)…Jelly beans in general are gross, yet I sometimes eat them anyway unless they are black or white. YUCK! Jelly Belly all the way, baby! I can’t dance either. Now I’m off to actually read the chapter.

    2. this is exactly how I imagined it would be, how she goes back and forth. God why do I always have that nagging feeling that I want Bette to wait. What is it, if anything, does tina have that i want them together? I can see Tina thinking, acting, going thru all these emotions…

    3. Boy, is Tina one confused woman! She wants it all but unfortunately, life ain’t like that. Does she want Bette or does she not want Bette to be w/anyone else? She continually punished Bette for her indiscretion. Enough already! Bette repeatedly genuflected at her feet. Let her go or reunite. Tina comes across as a spiteful beotch. It is dificult to explain Tina’s reasoning b/c she’s not clear herself as to her own feelings. Bette fought for her but Tina kept throwing poo sandwiches in her direction. What’s a woman to do? Your writing is exceptional LK.

    4. Sorry jumped right into your story and missed your comments. As for Helena and Bette don’t see it don’t want to. As for Tina and Bette I’ll keep hope alive.

    5. I’m in a bind now, lasty, cos I have had it up to HERE with tina and can’t bear to read one more word about her, yet you know I can’t stay away from your writing! I just want to throttle her. What exactly is throttling? I don’t know but it rhymes with bottling, not pages, and licorice jelly beans RULE. PLEASE let tina get run over by a herd of crazed sloths and let bette be happy…even for one shining moment…..PLEEEEEEEEEEASE

    6. Now onto my real comment: I feel sorry for the cashier who had to ring all that shit up. I remember how at the beginning of the month I’d get a bunch of cartloads of stuff to ring up. I’ll stop right there otherwise I might offend someone with a comment about said customers. I’ve sort of been in Tina’s shoes with her where you know you’re doing something wrong but you don’t know if you want to stop doing it. Maybe that’s why I find myself feeling more sorry for her than some readers. I’ve probably already said it as a comment to you but I know I’ve said it elsewhere. Tina should just be single for awhile! She won’t figure out what autonomy is if she is always in a relationship. Plus, Angelica doesn’t deserve to live with 2 adults who fight all the time. And back to feeling bad for Tina, I found myself agreeing when Tina pretty much summed it up that Bette is the golden girl who can’t seem to do wrong. But that’s if we’re looking at all transgressions, forgiven or not. Tina should’ve saved $400 that she spent at the store to buy multiple sessions with my therapist (we don’t do that $100+/session bullshit where I come from).

    7. Tina makes my head explode! Where to begin with this woman?!?! When does she self-reflect? Did she really fall in love or she fell in love with comfort and “normal” when she married Henry? Tina is a hot mess right noo and is in desperate need of professional help. Despite my feelings for her I can’t stand to see her like this, it’s so unhealthy. Soon she will be taking it out on baby A. Please get Tina to a therapist very quickly! No Helena and Bette hook-up, please, with cherries on top!

    8. Hey lastkid…I just finished chapter one of what I’m sure will prove to be sheer wonder intermingled with momentary lapses of brilliance. Please tell me you write for a living…How indeed can people say so little and mean so much. A question for all time and posed so exquisitely in this story.

    9. Man, lastkid, you make me so glad I’m not Tina. Even in my most desperately confused moments (rather long ago, I’m glad to say) I don’t think I ever visited that particular neighborhood of hell. The woman seems to have no inate core, a soul like the water that swirls down the toilet. Alice must be some kind of saint to bear her. Really, kid, how can Tina bear herself? She’s not going to suicide, is she?

    10. Your words just grab me and willingly, I get lost in the story. lastkid, your comments crack me up, leading me to believe you are one of the wittiest persons I’ve…never met. Off topic/story but will Courtney ever make another appearance? I look forward to another long post. Please? Thank you.

    12. Wonderful dialogue. I guess that I will always be one of the “few” who refuse to give up on Tina & Bette. We all knew that Tina was bi-sexual from the beginning, perhaps that is playing into her inability to “be” who she really is and accept it. The need to conform to what society expects of us is strong and often overpowering.

    13. Perish the thought that you could ever post too many pages of this marvelous story! As for green jelly beans, ugh, I’m with you on that one……Interestingly enough, couples fight most about money and sex. Henry is definitely not happy about their physical relationship, but I am going to surmise that it has less to do with his need to connect on an intimate emotional level, but rather is more about his need to validate his manhood. It’s a need to prove that everything is okay between them, because having sex means that things are fine – at least in his eyes. What he doesn’t understand is that for Tina, her entire life right now is a struggle WITH emotions. If it were just about sex, she could sleep with Henry with impunity, for Tina this is solely an emotional conflict……Henry picks a fight with Tina to get a reaction out of her because they cant’ communicate otherwise. However, he is pushing his luck. Just like trying to force a square peg into a round hole – inviting the work friends that have kids is just another attempt orchestrate the family he wants and the one that Tina lead him to believe she wanted, into existence……The weather, specifically the heat, seems to be a metaphor for the level of discomfort that Tina feels, or possible a commentary on how she jumped out of the fat and into the fire because of her knee jerk decision when she left Bette……Tina’s need to know if Bette is having sex is just another way to gauge how far Bette has moved on…….Tina reverts to type when she is screams at Alice, she adjudicates Bette’s actions, but will not hear any counsel regarding her own……Tina is naive for thinking that she could make such a rash decision regarding her sexuality, her cupidity for Henry and not expect it to disrupt lives and then show up at Cream and expect all to be forgiven……Accusing Alice of blindly accepting everything that Bette says annoys her because it would mean that Alice or anyone else may understand where Bette is coming from, that she may have a right to be upset and that in turn means that Tina has some culpability – and that has never sat well with Tina…….The see-saw conversation she has with Alice is dilatory in her willinness to accept repsonsibility……Tina goads Alice to tell her what her opinion is, she practically picks a fight in the same manner that Henry picked one with her, because Tina won’t face the truth herself. She wants an out, a whipping boy, if the opinion doesn’t suit her……Loved Tina freezing in the store, so symbolic of the cold, hard truth…….Nothing like having your feet held to the fire, and she was busted in a big way by Alice. Her belief that everything happens to her alone, that she lives in an insular world is coming crashing down around her feet. Alice is calling her on her bullshit in a way that Bette should have long ago, but deep pain and hurt rarely affords us that kind of insight at the time……Tina has some audacity to say she should not have had to support Bette – uh, isn’t that what Bette did for her? She was there while Tina flipped out during her first pregnancy, when she lost the baby, it was Bette that still supported them while Tina volunteered. Where’s the reciprocity? As Alice pointed out, there was quite a bit on Bette’s plate that one would think that a partner would at the very least, give you a pass on, for a little while anyway……Bette’s affair with Candace is de minimus, it’s Tina’s unwillingness to forgive and a myriad of other influences that rattled Tina’s security that dealt the final blow to their relationship…….Tina alludes to returning to the beginning, to the tabula rasa that was prior to all of her turmoil – but will Tina ever be able to look in the mirror and see herself and her own failings and not Bette’s?……Kid, unlike IC’s season three conspectus, you offer us an intelligent distillation and sagacious look at Tina’s inner conflict. You have cleverly allowed her to implode in such a way that she is being given the tools to see the results from this dismantling and to rebuild and return herself to a less flawed version. If IC had a tenth of the talent that you posess, then we would have had fewer WTF moments in season three concerning Tina and might possibly have been afforded the opportunity to see her struggle morph from theorectical confusion to believable empathy. Excellent as always!!

    14. laskid… thanks for this insightful chapter. Having read this somehow Season 3 Tina makes more sense! Yeah I’ve been reading all along but decided I’m not worthy of leaving any comments cuz girl you write beautifull stuff Love this story of yours and have enjoyed your other stories too! Oh and for the record.. PLEASE … PLEASE PRETTY..PRETTY PLEASE DO NOT make alpha gorgeous Bette be anything more than just friends with Helena, leave Bette alone make her play the field for a bit if ya must, have her meat tagged whatever but keep Bette and Helena JUST FRIENDS! and than again the quill is mightiest in the bard’s hand, thank you for sharing your talents with us and 5 plus…plus… plus for this chapter I especially LOVE the dialogues!

    15. I love this story, it it nice to have some one actually explain what is going on with these two, yes I think you should start at the begining of when they started to fall apart. No one has done that yet and it would be nice to see why they did fall apart in the first place. Something started it and if they could just find why they fell apart then maybe they could fix it.

    16. I agree with the comments from Lamentamini. Tina does need to live alone and put her life into some perspective. I still believe that she desperately loves Bette or she would not be this confused. I don’t think that she even likes Henry, he was there when she needed someone different. Her actions right now show this. Her first step should be to leave Henry and move out to be by herself. Then next step should be to put Angelica back into Bette’s life. I to do not want to see Bette and Helena together. I love Alice in that she is the only one that Tina can seem to talk to. She is also the only that can seem to get through to Tina. So Alice keep working on Tina because I am a crazy fool who believes that Bette and Tina should be together.

    17. These are the questions we wanted IC to ask and to answer, but she didn’t. And if past seasons are any indication, she won’t. I am reading your wonderful story and it only makes me sadder at what a dissappointment Ms. Chaiken’s series has become. If she’s going to create the drama between Bette and Tina, then THIS is the kind of drama we want to unfold from it, but unlike the rich texture and complexity of your story, we get Bette silenced in some ridiculous retreat, and Tina writing two lines to Daddyof2. This is amazing Lastkid, truly amazing. You imagination and your skill is just amazing. Thank you.

    18. Here’s a limerick for you:There was a young author from Mainewho’s output was somewhat inaneshe went on for ageswrote pages and pagesand drove all of her readers insane. No, seriously, don’t worry about the length of your chapter, it’s just fine! And I’m not insane yet and won’t be, unless you stop writing!

    19. Well, I’m glad someone read my comment. lol However, the sentence AFTER the “golden girl” comment has to be read as well otherwise I’ll sound as if I thought it was okay for Tina to treat Bette like crap. I don’t agree with that at all. I guess I was just pointing out that no one woman was a saint(ess?) here. That and I’m getting tired of shitting on Tina no matter how wrong she is. =/ I just wish she’d pull her head out of her butt and make some decisions.

    20. Oh Tina, it’s definitely going to rain. In fact, I predict a caca storm like you wouldn’t believe! Where do I purchase my front row seats for the showdown, Lastkid? Excellent chapter! And yes, I do want the TiBette ship to sail the high seas again…that is after Bette has her Porter Anger Fest ’06 on Tina.

    21. i find myself holding my breath and my stomach clutching as i read your story, like it is actually happening to someone i know, and then i have to realize it’s all made up, and you have me hooked on yet another chapter with your great writing…..way to go girl!!!

    22. It almost seems like Tina is headed for a nervous breakdown. She definetly needs therapy regardless. She treated Bette like crap at the end and now she is doing the same thing to Henry. She needs to be alone for a long while and get her shit together.Great chapter LK.

    23. How like the Tina we all came to know in Season 3 to put things in terms that make her look like the victim. “Did she tell you she called me to tell me that rich Senator wanted to fuck her?””Huh?” “Oh, I see. She tells Kit all the bad shit I did, out of context, I might add, but conveniently leaves out her own … antics.” My question is to her, “Did you conveniently leave out the part where Bette was asking whether you cared or not and you just stayed silent?” You are doing a great job writing Tina, but I must say the victim routine is wearing thin. She keeps going back to Alice and hearing the same things, but refuses to do anything to reduce her confusion and settle her own issues. OK, now I’m finished venting and am looking forward to the next chapter as this really is one of the best stories going at the moment!

    24. WOW!!!! LastKid that was great. Tina needs to pull her Blond head out of her Ass and stop feeling sorry for her self. Live with the choice you made or move on Tina. Bette needs to be a part of Angel’s Life. I like Bette and Helena together. LK your story is so great I don’t mind how long the chapter’s are. Thankyou Please Post Soon

    25. You really are an excellent writer. Your award winning story was brilliant, even though it broke my B&T loving heart. This one looks to surpass the excellence you attained with the former. Yet, as I read your words, sentences and paragraphs, I find myself holding my body tensely awaiting the other shoe to drop. I’m afraid to be hopeful you will reunite T&B, and write about the lasting love many of us want them to share. We cling to the thought of B&T being together because for a few of us there are no deal breakers. Mistakes are made, fights are emotional, separation may come, but in the end…the love is so special it can’t be denied. You’ve previously stated that you are a realist. I take that to mean it is inconceiveable for you to imagine they could reunite after what has happened. Regardless, you write them so purely and with such beauty I can’t help but cheer for them and hope in the end they will be happy together. Thank you for your contribution to the site. A well written story is a treasure.

    26. Wow, LK, the way you have written how confused Tina is really is amazing. Now I read Lamentamini’s comment about Bette being a golden girl, and of course I can’t help but disagree with this :), But I agree with Alice. If Tina is straight then she would have eventually broke up with Bette, and regardless of Bette cheating, B didn’t deserve the coldness and indifference that was bestowed upon her during this past season. And with your fill-in story, she most certainly didn’t deserve being shut out of Angel’s life. I know that If I were Tina, I wouldn’t have taken Bette back, but would have worked out the whole co-parenting thing. And I know if I were Bette…I don’t think I could ever forgive Tina for the past…however long your story takes place. With that said…I can’t wait for more chappys, I’m fine with whatever direction you take Bette and Tina, with either reconciliation, different lives, but co-parenting, Hooking B up with Helena, where ever! Because you write your stories with class, dignity, and grace. I see the story transform into a visual while I read. And you’re really spot on with the character! Keep up the excellent work! Oh yeah! Please post your other stories again, and find a way to let me have them! I miss them!!:)

    27. You know, I have never liked jelly beans either. Strange, because I like Skittles and I like Starburst so it should follow that the bean shaped variety might please the palate. Go figure. But really, what is up with those squishy, yellow chicks that inevitably end up in an Easter basket. It can’t possible be legal to suggest they are edible, let alone imply they are a holiday “treat.” They might make a great foe for Sponge Bob in Bikini Bottom, but talk about gross. However, I digress. Not as well as you of course. But I have wandered of the path, and I am sure to get poison oak, or ivy, depending on your geographic location. Anyway, I think you are doing a wonderful job getting inside Tina’s head and exploring all the complexities of her actions/reactions. And no matter the story, I have always loved the way you write Alice. From their lunch conversation to the aftermath of the standoff at the OK Corral, Alice is getting at the heart of it and challenging Tina to do the same. Standing still for a friend is not always easy but it can make all the difference in the world. Even Tina can see that over her Everest of groceries.

    28. i think it’s time to at least let bette back into angie’s life…whatever tina’s issues are, she can’t not see that that’s not right to take angie away…i love alice, she’s so wise…and i still want B&T together

    29. I haven’t read this chapter yet, but if it is anything like the pervious ones, I’m sure it’s incredible. You and this story (tho there are a few others :)) give me hope in L Word fanfiction. The symbolism and subtext layered throughout your story and within the chapters is…ah, brilliant and make it that much more enjoyable to read. It is so utterly refreshing to read TLW fanfic where the characters are in character, the grammar is proper, and there at least SEEMS to be a beta looking it over before the story is posted. But most importantly, the characters and events are heightened enough to create compelling drama, but in a manner that in no way cheapens the illusion that these are “real people” in real events. Which is just an overly complicated way of saying the characters react appropriately to the situations they are in, but is still entertaining or cathartic to the reader. Something the actual show often fails to do.Be proud lastkid, be very proud, for where the so-called professionals have fallen short, you have succeeded. That said, don’t let it all go to your head….And keep writing, damnit!

    30. So…you’re going to take Tina back to the beginning. It will be interesting to see if she has the maturity and stability to discover herself…whatever that is. Great point from Alice–if Tina was always straight then Bette’s days were always numbered. Oh yeah, it will be interesting to see what you think the “beginning” is.
