Tina, Tiny Pieces Chapter 14
Early Saturday afternoon, Tina and Henry’s house
We sit together, silently chewing our bagels, neither of us eating much. Angelica is asleep, Henry is with Mikey.
But I thought you came in to visit with me?
I have visited with you, dear. What’s wrong with me wanting to take my granddaughter away for a day or two?
I lie.
She’s – um, she’s never been away from me.
She raises her eyebrow.
Well then it’s high time, don’t you think? Besides, it will give me time alone with her and it will give you two some time alone together.
There’s something in the way she looks at me, pointedly, purposefully, it feels shot through with recrimination. I look down. I pick up my bagel, I set it back down. I look at her.
Mom, there’s something I need to talk to you about.
She stops chewing. She nods slightly, an assent for me to continue. I smooth my napkin out, I inhale, I look at her.
Things around here … they’ve been tough lately. We’re fighting – a lot.
I am stumbling already.
I’ve spent the past day and a half with her, more or less making endless small talk, nervously wanting, hoping for more. I’ve mustered the occasional plaintive look in her direction, most have been met with a warm smile, but no invitation, no inquiries later, when we’re alone.
We’ve gone shopping, we took Angelica out for lunch, we spent a mostly quiet dinner last night, she and Henry exchanging small talk too, but theirs was friendlier, happier, chattier. If I’m being honest, I sense that some of her bubbliness with him seems forced.
If she senses the distance between us, if she perceives my nervousness now, it doesn’t show.
Marriage isn’t easy, Tina. It’s no cakewalk.
I bristle and try to hide it. She rolls her eyes.
You two have spent what – three or four months? Try 38 years.
But you and Dad -you’re happy. You’ve always had a good marriage.
Her look is dismissive.
Tina, you’re an adult. But you’re still my child. And children rarely know much about their parents’ marriage, despite what they may think.
So … you haven’t been happy?
I didn’t say that. Your father and I have a solid marriage. But if you think it’s been easy, if you think it’s been a walk in the park for us, you’re wrong.

wow…this chapter was breathtaking!
wow. wow. Ok, I’ve pretty much has hated Tina throughout this entire story (you’re written is magnificant, by the way) but here…I just…couldn’t help but wanting to jump in this story and beating the crap out of her mother, and just holding her until she was done crying…Now. Is grandma gonna take Angelica and not giver her back? and Tina will seek out Bette for help?
LK..This is fucking phenomenal. Totally unbelievable. IMO, your best chapter to date and you’ve had many excellent ones. The depth of emotion, I couldn’t catch my breath. I felt as if I had been punched in the solar plexus. The vitriol, hatred, confusion expressed by the two women could only be between two that had an intense relationship and connection: mother and daughter, spouses or lovers. Brava!
Interesting take on Tina’s mom, and it definitely explains her complete absence from TLW storyline thus far. She’s a heinous bitch, but she makes some good points… or, rather, you make some good points through her? Either way, this is so well written I can’t stand it, and I just want to steal some of your talent to get me through final papers… Thanks for sharing, I look forward to more, as always!
wow – what to say – i can’t understand why Tina didn’t take angelica and run straight (sorry) back to Bette and WEHO.thats some mother!good chapter – now lets see T pick herself up and get back on the road to betteville!
ok, hell has apparently frozen over, and pigs must be flying, cos I…agree with pandamel. We now know though, where tina learned her withholding and passive agressive behaviors. The thing i kept ntoicing though is that tina kep saying “lete bette SEE angie”..i guess what that means, like vistiation or allowing bette to be her mother, remains to be seen. I couldn’t believe when tina’s mother actually said that bette would forget about her!!!! I know lasty, that you are probably in shock at this moment..but gt a cold drink and lie down…i also wanted to tell you that i so loved your authors notes in your last posts, i have been having a rough couple of weeks and your notes absolutely crack me up. I am not, however, QUITE ready to allow tina to return from darkest peru…
Jesus! I said it before and I will say it again Tina is a hot mess! WoW! Now if Tina acted like this on the show, I might be more intrigued by her. Hmmm…I wonder who would play her mother?!? Watching this unfold I for one did not feel sympathy for Tina. She created this mess she is currently living in and what a hell it is!!! Atleast tina is recognizing her life is crap right about now and looking for ways to shovel it out. And my oh my what a really big shovel it will be! The mother, what a piece of work!!! I loved how she did not bait tina. As usual tina was being vindictive and spiteful! Please bring back the mother, I thought she was great, just the person you love to hate!
As much as I wanted to knock this chick to the floor and beat her head in, she did make a valid point or two. She asked Tina why she left Bette at the first sign of trouble. of course Tina gave the “she cheated” answer as usual. I am really, REALLY lucky to have parents who didn’t kick my ass to the curb when I came out to them. Now Tina needs to either piss or get off the pot with regards to letting Angelica and Bette back into each others’ lives.
i apologize for all the typos, and am back in my normal state..tina is STILL parroting those three little words, and she did leave bette at the first sign of trouble…whew, im me again!!
I would never let that woman take my baby for 2 seconds let alone 2 days. I would kick Henry backside for inviting her to LA. Can’t stand judgemental people. thanks
Kid, although this chapter is very powerful and says a lot for all that makes Tina the woman she is, it still doesn’t make me feel an ounce of empathy for her. We aren’t talking of a little kid here, but a grown woman who seems to continually blame Bette for the path her life has taken………. “You can’t make someone a mother and then unmake them.†– It took SOMEONE else to say this to Tina; and apparently she couldn’t come to that realization on her own; now she insist on shoving the very thought down her own mothers neck. Who is Tina trying to convince? Her mother NEVER accepted Tina as being gay, she NEVER accepted Bette and she is NOT the one that made Bette a mother one day and took it all away the second the opportunity presented itself. Has Tina ONCE asked herself how she thinks she might feel if the shoe were on the other foot? Would Bette have done this bullshit to her at all????????????? Kcuf u Tina!!
It is amazing the amount of anger I felt building in me as I read this chapter. Tina’s mother represented so many people in this story…I cannot believe that after all that…after everything that woman just said to Tina and what Tina now understands about her mother, that as a mother Tina would allow her daughter to be with her alone. As a mother, how could she allow that particular woman just walk in and take her child. Then again, even with all her yelling, Tina still allowed her mother to walk in and take everything else. Thank you for this.
No way would that woman be leaving the house with my child! I see why Tina is so messed up, with a mother like that. Where is the unconditional love. Tina needs to call it quits with Henry, and start over on her own. It can not be healthy for Angelica to be around such ignorant people. Thanks a bunch for Posting.
Fuck, kid, Mother is a monster. (Paging Dr. Freud. paging Dr. Freud.)How come Tina has enough backbone to have a fairly vicious fight with her and then just caves when she’s got the most right? Mom scored a couple of points along the way, not hard to do when having a heart to heart with Tina, and with that successfully invaded and superceeded both Tina’s and Angelica’s lives. And how huge a coward, how inept must Henry be to resort to calling her in to shore up what he knows to be a toxic charade?
hmm ya i think i wanna strangle her!
omfg!!!! that is soooooo good. I love it. you should send this the mrs. Illene to read. I can’t wait for the next chapter. please don’t let me wait too long. I check for your story everyday before i go to class.
LastKid,I normally don’t comment the second time but reading this again and the comments, I just have to say that Tina did not show an ounce of courage. The only reason she reacted that way was because tina is nearing or at her wit’s end of agony and despair. When you have sunken that low, you tend to lash out and never give a damn about what comes out of your mouth. Reason: your low enough, thier really is nothing left but to be defensive. Like I said Tina wants somebody to placate her, hold her hand and validate her feelings, tell her everything is going to be all right. Fine, Bette cheated, but does tina even take the time out to relaize her equal role in the breakdown of her marriage? NO!!! Her mother was right in telling her she ran away at the first sign of trouble and that was BEFORE the affair. That was the icing on the cake! An affair is devestating, but Tina GET THE FUCK OVER IT! This is why tina is a fucking trashbag right now, shit just piles in the trash and she doesn’t bother cleansing it out. Instead it gets bigger until it starts to stank and burst at the seems! I LOVE THIS STORY!Tina: word of advice, GET SOME HELP( why I am talking to a fanfic character..lol)
I’ve not read this entire story only one or two chapters but, today I want to beat the holy crap out of Tina’s mother. Hopefully Tina won’t let her mother take the baby away. She will call Bette to come and get both of them.
Wow. Aah… aah… gaah…. I am thrown. THIS is why I love your fic so much, Lastkid. I offer you all my viable eggs to do as you please. Be it for breakfasts or babies, they’re all yours! Thank you very much for your post. Made my day. Cheers!
WOW!!! LastKid!!!! Take a HUGE bow. Your writing is always great but in this chapter it was PHENOMENAL & FANTASTIC. You have done so much to give Tina an added dimension to her personality by the introduction of the cold-hearted bitch who is her mother. No wonder Tina has problems. It clear by your final words that she missed her mother’s approval and has totally fucked up her life in a pointless quest to get some semblance of a relationship with her mother. Obviously a lost cause. You have expertly made her mother a convincingly small minded judgmental conservative. Again I say excellent. I echo the sentiments of the other readers….Give Tina enough gumption to prevent her mother from even going into Angelica’s room and getting anywhere near her. Oh, and maybe also let Tina apply a HARD karate kick to Henry’s backside for the lying, manipulative invitation to his lying manipulative mother-in-law. I can’t wait for your next chapter.
Incredible, Powerful, Heartbreaking You hit every note on the scale with this chapter. I felt like one big tense knot when I finished reading. Sometimes I forget to comment, but I am fully engaged in this story.
A sizzling chapter. Amazing dialog and emotion. I was cheering Tina on and holding my breath at the same time. There’s no way Tina should let Angelica go with that toxic woman.
That was better than the De la Hoya vs. Mayorga boxing match last Saturday. Yet, I don’t think Tina even knows what she’s in for when she attempts to talk to Bette. She’ll probably get the verbal beating of her life. Memo to self: Have popcorn and beer ready when that chapter is posted.
You know my mom is just like Tina’s mom. I guess that is why I have never disliked Tina like so many others have. We both have fought that fucking battle to do what mom’s want but in our own little hearts all we want is to be happy with that special woman. Tina is finally realizing that and hopefully making a beeline back to Bette. Even if it is to let Angelica back into her life at least Tina hopefully will take that leap of faith back.
LK, this is your best chapter and one of the best I’ve ever read on this site. I read in horrified fascination as you peeled back layers of the mother/daughter relationship and perfectly captured how Tina devolved to her current state. Your development of Tina’s mom made my skin crawl and I hope mom returns. I knew Tina hit rock bottom when she allowed her mom to take Angelica. Healing can’t really begin until you hit rock bottom.
That witch (disguised as Tina’s mother) wouldn’t even get to touch my child. She wouldn’t have been in my house in the first place after choosing to not be in my life for the past eight years. Henry’s ass is grass. And Tina’s mom is a fool if she thinks Angelica would be ‘better off’ being in a situation where her mother is miserable – children know when their parents are unhappy, and it affects them the same way.
Each time I say “that was the best chapter ever”, you successively pen another masterpiece – and this was no exception. It was exquisitely painful, heartbreakingly beautiful as they laid bare their grotesque truths………..Apparently the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Tina is a reflection of her mother who is equally as manipulative, passive/aggressive and duplicitous…..And, just like Tina, Mrs. Kennard chooses to run away with Angelica rather than stay and work things out with her daughter……….Each of them accuses the other with vitriol over their life choices, using marriage and relationship as a term of opprobrium, rather than as common ground that might provide a starting point for understanding why they have ended up with such animosity towards each other………….There is so much potential for reconciliation but they both choose to capitulate to fear and act on it’s sister emotion – anger. They are afraid that the other is right about their behavior, their choices in how they interact with each other or how they face challenges. They are also afraid that if they admit that they have been less than honest and compassionate with each other that they will no longer hold the position of power, and that’s a scary proposition for those who are insecure or have a need to control things…………..They are both deeply hurt by the other and they are practically screaming for help in soothing the hurt that has gone on far too long………..From Mrs. Kennard’s perspective, she is there because she only wants Tina to be happy. And as much as she may proclaim that Tina’s relationship with Bette wasn’t a marriage, it boils down to the fact she doesn’t want Tina to live a life that is filled with conflict. Henry may not be perfect, but he will provide for Tina a path with fewer obstacles than Bette — I get the feeling that Mrs. Kennard knows that Tina would be happier with Bette, but ultimately she is a mother protecting her daughter from an ugly world…………Tina on the other hand is simply a daughter that wants to be loved by her mother. She is angry at how her mother has withdrawn her love from her and has reacted because of it with rancor. That withdrawing of love has, I imagine, effected how Tina interacts in her intimate relationships – specifically, Bette. When faced with the possibility of love not being perfect, you are the one to leave before it is withdrawn from you. Tina does that in spades………..Tina and her mother are both territorial about their hearts and their lives and each tries to draw first blood. They use the only weapons they have at their disposal in order to lash out and exact a certain measure of punishment for the slights that they both feel so deeply…for Tina it’s her father and her relationship with him and how her mother was excluded from that bond to a certain degree….for Mrs. Kennard, it’s Angelica – the only thing that is truly all Tina’s, what she’s the most insecure about and – the only thing that loves Tina unconditionally………..this is about want, need, betrayal and confusion and how each of those plays a part in the decisions and consequences of the choices we make in life – and it’s about love. In their own dsyfunctional way, they love each other but don’t have a clue how to show each other without feeling like they are consigning their egos to a position of impotence………..However, Tina’s visit with her mother has given her a clearer picture of the tangled mess that she has made of her own life, her life with Bette and the somewhat shaky underpinnings of conviction that she needs to make some changes………..To say that you are outstanding is so pitifully inadequate as are fantastic, brilliant, magnificent and wonderfully sagacious. So, instead I will just say wow….WOW!
Powerful stuff Lastkid wonderfully done!!!
I’m starting the get the feeling that Tina will never leave this fucking cycle of turmoil behind and I find that very disconcerting. But great as always Kid.
this is actually happening out there, somewhere, so true to life..painful, honest, but true….
Out of the water, I’m blown. Like a whale, beached. You I thank.
Well I guess now we see that Tina didn’t really got rid of some of the behavior patterns that are inflicted in our unconcious as a child and distract us from living a full life. Now that we know where she comes from maybe I understand some of her actions, she didn’t even realize what her problem was and just could not deal with it. though I’m not defending her now I understand a little.Great story.
Loved how you were able to have Tina gain some clarity of her life by defending it to her mother. She finally seems ready to start making some positive choices. Loved it! PS If the chappy isn’t too intense, please continue with the witty comments–they always make me smile.
At least the mother is consistent, her point clear and consistent throughout. What has Tina been playing at? Obviously, she never, never got over Bette cheating on her. Why did she conceive another child, resume the relationship? Was she hoping it could save her, as she hoped being with Henry would provide some refuge. Yes, Angelica belongs with Bette, while Tina sorts out her own life. You’ve taken what has been an incomprehensible s/l (Tina and Bette breakup and the return to men), and made it plausible. LK, you’ve explained it all for us!
Bravo! The bile I felt creeping up my throat while reading this exchange was actually not for Tina this time around, but for her insufferable bigoted mother. I hope Tina comes to her senses and does not allow that woman to take her daughter away from her, even if for only two short days. Thank you for allowing a non S3 Tina fan a reason to give her a modicum of respect for finally making a non self-pitying (albeit limited) stand against someone…anyone. I believe Tina’s head is slowly but surely coming out of her ass, where it’s been ignorantly wedged for far too long. Excellently written, kid.
Very emotional writing. More soon please. Excellent!
that was an absolutely amazing chapter…I am now cheering for Tina and wanting her to smack her idiotic mother….thanks kid…post soon
Tina was verbally confronting her mom, but she’s in deed doing the things along with her mom. That’s why she can never win the debate. She’ll go crazy if she’s still in the marriage. Can’t you have tinny-tiny mercy to free the poor woman. Let her escape… to Bette. It’ll make Bette strong again. I’d like to see a strong Bette, and happy. My heart’s been aching for a whole week every time after reading your new chapter til the next new strike. Great writing!
lord woman, i am so wrapped up in this damn story, i have to keep looking in the mirror to re assure myself im not tina!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, this is well done. I hate it. But I love it. Painful as it is, I can’t wait for more.
I would like to thank you LK for all your wonderful stories. Thank you for shaking my emotions and for portraying in a wonderful way the confusion, the pain, the broken relationship between a woman and her mom, the rejection… Thank you once again
Kid, this was wonderfully done. Finally your drippy pen appears, as if in agreement. Magnum Opus!!
Hey, how is this possible. You know my mother?. It’s almost the same situation and conversation I’ve had with my mother about 30 years ago. There were no kids involved, but nevertheless, it’s almost identical. After the conversaton she left and I never saw her back, thank god for that…and I’m still happy with the same wife she despite so much. So if you talk to her again, don’t give her my regards.
Is Tina fucket up or what? At least she’s starting to realize what a mess she’s made of things. Her mother on the other hand, wanted to slap her. Though she did have a couple of good points. Especially about if she considered her and Bette married then why did she run at the first sign of trouble. Lord knows married or not any relationship is like a 24hr a day job. I don’t think I’d let her mom taker her anywhere, and boy would I be pissed at Henry.
like seahurst i can’t believe tina would let her mother take angie, even for 2 days…i hated mrs. kennard from the first words she’s spoken even if she said some interesting things…but i would love to see tina taking angie and running away from Henry and Co, back to the life she misses
just read it all…love your style, really feeling sad for tina, she made a poor choice in marrying henry and now with letting her mother to take angelica…i hope tina will start making right choices
I sit here in awe at the number of people who say that a mother like Tina’s couldn’t walk off into the sunset for 2 days with their child. That may be true of a woman with a backbone; TINA DOESN’T HAVE ONE!! For all her bravado, she is still sitting at square one. Mrs. Kennard hit several nerves within Tina, and Tina hit a few of her own; her mom just hid it better; but lets face it….she didn’t say anything that Tina didn’t already know and hearing it come from her mothers’ mouth doesn’t change anything that has happened in the past. Tina’s mother washed her hands of Tina because of her relationship with Bette. Tina called Henry a lying bastard, but truth be told, Tina knew why her mother was coming to town…….she could deny it til the cows came home; but deep down, she knew; especially considering her mother would NOT have come to town to see Angelica if she were still with Bette.
I love a chapter when I find myself grumbling at the computer as I read… damn… Tina doesn’t fit into Henrys world with his friends. WHY would Tina let a woman ‘who claims to be her mom’ take her baby to bond with… when if in fact she is having second thoughs about being with Henry…knowing this woman will disown this child if Tina does go back to Bette. I’d kick her out and pack my bags move out.. NOW.. great chapter .. PLEASE POST SOON.. Thanks
