    Timid Devotion (Part 3)

Bette had been home for about an hour when she heard the phone ring.

    "Hello?"

"Umm … hi Bette, it’s Tina."

Bette smiled instantly at her voice, "Hey, what’s up?"

There was a pause in conversation before Tina spoke again. "Umm maybe I shouldn’t have called. Sorry if it’s late."

"No no, I asked you to call, remember?" Bette smiled, assuring Tina with her tone.

    "Right."

    "So is something troubling you?"

    "Does Alice count?" Tina chuckled.

"Sadly yes," Bette chuckled back. Tina felt a tingle when she heard Bette’s light laugther.

"She’s just bugging me about never going out."

"Well, you just don’t know the best places in town yet," Bette replied, sitting down in her favorite lounger. "Maybe I could take you out to a really great restaurant. And then you’d never want to eat at home again," she laughed.

    Tina’s heart warmed, "Like … a date?"

Bette sensed the pause and wondered if Tina felt uncomfortable. "Or whatever you want. It could just be two friends going out on the town."

Tina let out a sigh. ‘Just tell her you want to date her already!’ she screamed in her head. "Where were you thinking of?" she asked instead.

Bette chuckled again, "Well, there’s this really nice Italian place. What do you like?"

‘You’ Tina thought to herself, shaking her head at her own thought. "Italian would be great."

"So now, Alice has no reason to bug you," Bette reasoned with a smile, "Problem solved."

    Tina smiled too. "Thanks Bette."

The sincerity of her words made Bette’s heart race. She wished Tina could be in her company again. She could hardly wait. "Great, so when would work for you?"

"Umm … maybe Saturday?" Tina asked, smacking herself on the forehead quietly. ‘Date night? Well, that’s bound to be obvious’ she scolded herelf in her head.

    "Sure. Sounds wonderful."

Bette’s words put her at ease. "Great."

"Only two days until our date," Bette smiled, quickly realizing what she had said and how uncomfortable Tina had seemed with that word. "The date … on the calendar …"

Tina chuckled, she couldn’t hold it in. "I know what you mean."

Bette relaxed again. "Well, Saturday it is then. And I hope you like the restaurant – I think it’s magnificent."
