Thick and Thin (Part 11)
“Thirtysomething female, driver of car vs Wallmart truck. Jane Doe, serious lacerations to skull. GCS 4, compound tib, fib fracture. We gotta be careful people, she’s suffered a serious spinal injury so if we want her to walk again we’ve got to transfer her gently and in one fluid one motion. On my count, one, two, three. Excellent, ok thanks guys.” The doctor nodded to the paramedics.
“Ok we need standard trauma x-rays and I’ll need a head and spinal CT, we need to know where we’re going, phone the OR and bleep Robbins we’re gonna need him to help us put her back together. Let’s go people, chase the ID too we’ll need next of kin…”
Shane pulled herself away from the TV and went through to check on Dana. She was fast asleep and Shane elected not to wake her, instead deciding to make a phone call and have a desperately needed cigarette.
Across town two fire-fighters were sorting through the wreckage of the vehicles looking for identification for 3 of the injured passengers. In the wreckage of the blue mini a purse was discovered from between the twisted metal and shards of glass. A driver’s licence was found and behind it there was a hand written card.
In case of emergency please don’t phone my Mom! Contact either Dana Fairbanks 555-34512 or Shane McCutcheon 555-33728
On the driver’s licence there was a younger version of Alice Piezecki looking back at the fire-fighter.
“Bob, I’ve got one. Where’d this one go?”
“LA Medical Centre.”
“Ok I’m on it, shout Tony for me will you, I’ve got a house visit for him.”
Shane took a long drag of her cigarette, the nicotine calming her anxieties ever so slightly. She flipped open her cell phone and phoned the mother of their small family.
“Bette Porter”
“Bette its Shane.”
“Hey, what’s up? Dana ok?”
For one of the few times in her life, Shane was lost for words.
“I eh Bette…”
“Shane what’s wrong?” Bette asked, the concern obvious in her voice
“You know the accident on La Cienga?”
“Yeh”
“It’s all over the news, Alice left work hours ago to pick Dana up, she never made it to the hospital and isn’t answering her cell.”
