The Very Thought of You, Chapter 5

I wouldn’t say my garden is my pride and joy, as it seems to be for most of the other wives in our neighborhood.  I half-heartedly tend my plants, weeding only when the weeds get too thick to see the flowers.  I like bright colors and flowers that tend to themselves; unfortunately, it seems the only plant that fits that description is the dandelion.  I wish my flowers grew half as well as the grass that invades my beds.  I do enjoy ferns and violets; they spread quickly and require little care.

Henry takes a great deal more joy in the outdoor work, mowing perfect lines into the lawn.  I don’t think I’d mind mowing the lawn as much as caring for the gardens, but, sadly, Henry refuses to switch on the claim I wouldn’t know what to do if the mower broke.  True, but who’s to say it would break.

I miss days when five dollars would ensure one of my children would weed the garden clean and save me days worth of aches and pains, and they never seemed to mind the work, content to be out in the sun.  Yet, as much as I despise gardening, there are two plants that I adore and look after carefully: my lilies and my lilies of the valley.

Of course, the latter requires little to no care, but I make sure the grass stays back and the shade remains plentiful.  When the small, white bells appear in spring, I kneel in front of them as a worshipper in church does and just inhale.  They’re smell takes me back and connects me directly with Bette.  The perfume she wore was lily of the valley and a perfect replica of the scent.  Not a spring has passed since then when those small flowers haven’t devastated my senses, and, sometimes, when I’ve knelt in front of them daydreaming for a considerable time, I can almost feel her there and hear her gentle chuckle at my silliness.

Lilies, too, remind me of her.  It was she that informed me, way back, that flowers had been given meanings.  The lily means ‘I dare you to love me.’  Naturally, she chose the flower, fully aware of the meaning, when she bought me flowers that day in the city.

    1. Tina has children almost as old as Bette???? I do believe that Tina is going to have problens in this story she is married and Bette is young and single and gay. thanks

    2. Ahhhhh…. the anticipation of this story. I cannot tell you how much I want to find what happened for Tina to choose Henry… It must have been something really bad. Please, let Bette be safe… Thank you, NY. PPS.

    3. That was perfect. Those chats, phone calls really draw you in. I know a lot of people from this site who could also identify with it. :) Oh, and I also keep sticky note reminders of things I want to tell people. They’re all over my place.

    4. I don’t care if your post a short chapter, just please keep posting. NY, this story of yours touches my heart deeply. I just love your writing—more please!

    5. Well, if the lawnmower breaks, she can say, “Henry! Get your ass out here and fix this damn thing!” or figure out how to fix it herself. I opt for the former because it involves swearwords. Real mature, huh? Anyway, I can’t identify so much with the phone calls prior to a meeting or chatting for that long really. I did chat with someone for about that long prior to meeting however, looking back, it didn’t hold the magic that surrounded my first offline meeting with someone.

    6. I have been reading your story now and it feels amazing the way you have verbalized every emotion and detailed it with finesse.. please keep writing
