The Very Thought of You, Chapter 14

With her hand on the small of my back, she directed me into a small, dim coffee shop.  We sat in a window where we could watch the unsuspecting passersby and continued our conversation, again easing into it with small talk and on safe ground.  As the minutes ticked by, a sense of urgency descended, as if we realized this was only a day.  Our only day, it occurred to me, though at the time I had no real reason to think so.  She sensed it, too, as in a moment of acute clarity, she began to outline her exact wishes and plans for the future because, for her, there really lay no difference between the two.  What she wanted, she’d get, through persistence and desire, I could see that easily in her golden flecked deep brown eyes.

“It’s really not so unrealistic as it used to be,” she started.  “I think, when it comes time for graduate school, I’d like to give the west coast a try, see what California University has to offer.  I’d like to spend some time in West Hollywood, have some fun, live a little on the wild side, if I can mange it,” she chuckled.  She continued, intent on passing on her visions.  “Somewhere in there, I’d like to at least start a book.  I plan to write two, though I have no idea what they’ll be about yet.  One obscure and not terribly good, probably, the other pivotal for art history studies.  Somewhere along the line, I’ll probably decide to move back to New York and to the city, having developed an intense dependence on it in my youth.  I’ll teach at N.Y.U. or Columbia, or some other place that’ll have me, and I’ll do so until I get so old that I start to blur where art stops and reality starts.  Maybe I already do that a little,” she joked.  “And one day, when I’m about 104, I’ll pass away in the middle of a lecture, and my students won’t notice for ten minutes or so.”

“What about… love?”  My voice cracked as I asked it, nervously awaiting, though I didn’t know why, her answer.

“That’s a vastly more secret part of my plan.  Can I trust you with it?”  Her tone was whimsical, but her eyes said otherwise, told me the importance she placed on it all.  I nodded seriously.  “I have made plans for love, though I by no means bank on it.  I try to concentrate on what I actually have control over, and if I only focused on finding the one person who would make my life complete, I would never accomplish everything I can get through work.

    1. Just wish that Tina had the courage to live that dream of Bettes. I feel so sorry for Tina she will miss out on a life time of loving from an amazing lady thanks

    2. Now that dedication. Even when you sick you post. Thanks. Not that I want Bette pining away for 30 years over Tina, but I hope she will be available when (not if) Tina makes her move. BTW, NY is a great place to visit, but I would never want to live there again. Too cold in the winter.

    3. OMG NY, this chapter of Bette’s dream life is so beautiful…but if only! Even though we know that this wasn’t the life they each had with the other as long as there is life part of the dream is not dead. I have my own idea about what happened, but I will not make it known here. I will send it to you in my next e-mail. Because if I am right I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag so to speak. Take care NY and keep on writing this wonderful story only the way you can write it.

    4. I want Bette’s dream too. I’ve had bits and pieces of it, and have even gone as far as baking cookies. But to have the whole thing, would be a dream come true.

    5. it’s not too late; T’s right if Bette couldn’t have perfection she’d have nothing at all; she’s teaching at some College waiting for Tina to turn up…go tina, go!!!! live……..MORE

    6. Well from one Youtube addict to another – I´m So caught up in this story of yours, but you have me seriously confused.Tinas stroll down memory lane is so heartbreaking and I guess somehow the comfortable and expected made her choose Henry. But I really need to know more about Bette. Do we get to know about her life – will they ever meet again – God I´m so impatient.

    7. Hey, Noo Yawk….Great and wonderful chapter. Who said that NYers aren’t romantic? They invented romance in the most romantic city of them all. Bette’s great and glorious dreams. I love them.

    8. That was Bettetaking! I’ve fallen in love with your Bette. Can you write me somewhere into your story? Perhaps as the unexpected love that sneaks up on her when she’s not looking and usurps her heart in the night when she’s sleeping? Please! Pretty please? I’ve got ice cream! :) Babe this was a breathtaking installment…you’ve got my heart all over the place. Thanks for this. x
