The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Forty-Four
Chapter Forty-Four
When Bette returned home that evening, she was completely drained. They had talked until their voices ran out and then they’d sat at the windy beach with no resolution until Tina had announced she was ready to go. Their parting was cool, yet amiable and Shane didn’t ask any questions on the ride home.
The friends shared a long hug in Bette’s driveway before Shane assured her that everything would be just fine before telling Bette she loved her and that was happy for her and Helena.
When Bette let herself in the front door, Helena appeared like an apparition, dark circles under her eyes. At the sight of her, Bette felt her eyes tear and in moments, Helena pulled her into a warm embrace. The feel of Helena was soothing and comforting and Bette didn’t want to leave that spot. Her lover smelled of lavender shampoo and faint traces of perfume that were now smells of home for Bette.
Helena didn’t ask if Bette was okay. It was obvious that she wasn’t.
“I love you, Bette”, she whispered.
The taller woman nodded. “I love you, too.”
Helena pulled back and kissed her lover’s lips before gently kissing the honeyed forehead. “Come relax. I’ll run us a bath,” she said.
She had Bette lie down on the bed until the bath was ready. When called, Bette walked into the bathroom, her eyes again filling with tears. There was a tray of cheeses, crackers and snacks along with a few glasses of red wine. Candles dotted the dimly lit room and a foam of white bubbles capped the tub.
“You didn’t have to do this,” Bette whispered.
Helena gestured for her lover to come closer and began to undress the woman before her. “I love you, Bette. I needed to do this.”
Blue eyes studied the soft, supple lips of her lover and planted gentle kisses as she disrobed the woman before her. When Bette was naked, Helena stripped down herself and eased into the tub. She reached out for Bette’s hand and held it, guiding her into the warm water.
They eased into one another with Bette’s back resting comfortable against her lover’s chest. The soft breasts felt nice against her tired skin and she cradled her head against the crook of Helena’s neck. They shared a relaxing exhale and the dis-ease Bette had been feeling for hours began to finally slip away. She closed her eyes, inhaling the fragrance of strawberry bubble bath and vanilla candles.

Well. I must say, I’ve never been a big BELENA fan, I always thought they were to much like each other to fit together. But your story has done a great job at that. Tina was too whiny and I really don’t see her that way, but it was about time they had a discussion like that. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next. thank you for sharing, you are a great writer.
I hope Tina seeks out a therapist to help her deal with this. I`m not a fan of Bette and Helena being together, but I do understand Bettes reasons not to be with Tina – still not really comfortable with this – but great story. Thanks for the frequent updates.
This might be my shortest comment in the history of this story but all I have to say is ‘Bette is so screwed’. If she thought Helena had control and power over her life before as her enemy she’s in for a rude awakening letting this woman into her house and her heart. Forever indeed, but as I said they deserve each other. Always enjoy the double posts. Thank you.
I’m getting a feeling of winding down with this story, perhaps erroneous, likely inevitable. Thanks for the double post, though. :)
love this story and love the way you write. you’re really a great writer. I’m a tibette fan but I also love your take on belena. promise you won’t reunite tibette through some course of accident and death k. oh …… here’s a thought since we have double night posts why not have triple night posts too… I know I know I’m a glutton….. thank you MTS :)
Thanks for the double post special! Curious – what was the rationale for H sharing the adoption news with B?? When will H tell Bette about her meeting with Peggy and when will we see Peggy?? Soooo LOVE this fic!!!! Cheers!!!
Shit. First Project Runway, now this. Girl can’t catch a break.
still not comfortable with belena because i just can’t see them together…i do hope tina will find the way to deal with this situation and find happiness
Thank you for the post. I love the story (as a Belena fan I think there not enouugh and good stories for them – so I’m realy thankful) It’s good Bette and Tina had that conversation and I hope that means Tina won’t be a problem for their relationship. I’m waiting for some happy Belena times and Alice’s reaction when she finds out:)
Too much, too soon! Maybe it’s all a dream! Bette got the adoption papers and was overcome with emotion. It’s the Wizard of Weho – Helena is the good witch and Bette realizes there’s no place like home so, she clicks her heels together three times and winds up back in her bedroom with Angie and Tina looking on, lovingly. In our next chapter, Bette tells her family and friends all about her journey. Thank you!
And you think Tina turned over a table about Candace???!!! HA! I hope Kit has good insurance on the Planet’s fixtures and furniture!
Great update! I am totally in love with your fic.
Only if it is a big nightmare of Tina, because if all this is a dream of Bette, she’s enjoying and not going to want to wake up. Hahahahaha
Double post day is awesome, THANKS! Bette’s homecoming w/ bath & bubbles was sweet, but what happened after they left the bath & bubbles was HOT. Great update….things are becoming more clear w/ every post (ex. why Tina gave Bette joint custody)
So, 7 years of Bette not being her true self with Tina, then being her TRUE self with Helena at present……hhhmmmnnnnn. Is Bette bipolar?
I feel Tina is being crushed here. Why cant Bette see, she hurt her first??? I cried my heartout for Tina. I know what she is going thru’. The ego bruising, the frustration, everything. I know in ur story Tina did make mistakes, but that was a simple reflex of what Bette did to her, CHEATING. Its never easy to forget and forgive CHEATING. Bette not only allowed Tina to chase her, she didnt only break her heart, but crushed a woman’s dignity. Hell I do hate Bette. I am angry with Tina too, for not gaurding her dignity even after knowing what Bette has done. Gosh this story is hurting me more than I can tolerate. I must say again MST, u r a very very powerful writer. It breakes my resolve every day. I dont think Tina should do a closure thing. She just should not meet Bette at all. They should do co-parenting with Kit in the middle without seeing eachother. I know love never goes away. The one u love, u love for ever. But self respect should be there. ALWAYS. I know in love we hardly care for self respect. We do so many things out of line whn we are in love. seriously….. But.. well I hope best for Tina. this is really really overwhelming for me.u r amazing writer. But pray for me, I need strength to stop reading ur story.
Oops! …… my keyboard is very sensible, it sent my post without me finishing or reviewing it….. So I was saying: ….. Helena has been dealt a major blow. Not only she went through it without a serious difficulty or depression but she easily upped and conquered the world, on all fronts, without the slightest failure and in a very short period of time, is hard to believe. It’s not what happens in real life and that’s my problem with her character, it’s not realistic to me.On a second thought, she is not so virtuous, there’s still some of the self-centered, schemer Helena lingering in the corner, otherwise why would she tell her beloved one about the adoption on that specific day? When one truly care about someone and know that they had a rough time, one don’t add to their misery unless it serves ones purpose. In this case, knowing fully well how that day must have been difficult for Bette to confirm to Tina that she’s moved on and is in love with someone else, telling her about the adoption helped drive the last nail in a ” maybe getting back together” coffin in Bette’s mind . By casting the doubts about Tina’s genuine intention, when Helena fully knows how the former resisted all her attempts to make her Angie’s other mother in lieu of Bette is a master pre-emting coup which can only add to the hurt and mistrust Bette feels towards Tina and doesn’t help her lover to peacefully co-parent without second guessing her.
Thanks for the frequent updates. As much as this is a Belena story, I’m rooting for Tina. I’m also not sure if Helena’s “good intentions” (dropping hints to Tina about letting Bette get custody or telling Tina about the relationship so she can protect Bette), in doing so, doesn’t she take away Bette’s responsibility to Tina whether it be about coparenting or being friends? Isn’t that kinda co-dependent? Instead of letting Bette grow, mature, take responsibility…she takes over. Not sure that is healthy in any relationship…
Thanks for the 2nd post. What is so weird is how this story mirror life in how a person can’t do something for you but in another relationship they can. I know that pisses me off. Like the guy who can’t parent his own kids but will parent some other woman’s kids. If Bette doesn’t love Tina, Tina can’t make her. Apparently she never loved her enough to be herself with her.
Why do i still have this feeling that something really bad is going to happen? I detected some very subtle foreshadowing MTS?
The roller coaster ride continues but I think we are entering into the scariest part of the ride now. For some reason the movie ‘Fatal Attraction’ comes to mind. Can’t wait for more. Thanks for the double.
Tina putting the adoption through being Helena’s idea? That’s low. I’m going to preface this by saying, as I’ve said before in the comments for your story, that I never really liked either character. So there’s no bias on my part. I just tend to root for the underdog & in this story, to me, that’s Tina. It’s obvious in this story that Tina is playing the role of “wrongdoer”. It boggles my mind that some are saying Tina deserves this barrage of pain. Nobody deserves this level of pain. It’s like she’s got an uphill battle to right her wrongs & it’s the highest peak known to society. It’ll always be impossible to climb though, because in the eyes of most Bette-ers, she can never right the wrongs. Tina will always be the one to blame & Bette will always be the one without fault. Because she’s “The Almighty AlphaBette”, a superhero of sorts, that can do no wrong & always saves the day. Yeah, right. At some point doesn’t it get boring, one person always being the punching bag? I mean, how much more pain is Tina going to have to endure for her “sins”? Will Tina ever be able to repent for these “sins” or will she remain in purgatory? I understand that this is a Bette centric FF but does it have to be so glaringly one-sided? Can Tina do anything right? Just wondering. Because it gets rather tiresome seeing one person be blamed for everything & constantly tortured while the other one comes off as if she doesn’t have to be held accountable for her actions whatsoever. There’s always some lame excuse to explain away Bette’s behavior. It makes more sense when the characters are on at least somewhat of an even keel & there’s not such a seemingly contrived disparity. It’s way too hard to believe. Thanks for the story.
Glad Bette brought Shane to take care of Angie and went away with Tina to talk. As hard as it was for both of them I think it was a good start for both of them to move on. Liked how you portrayed Shane, she was after all the only of their friends who didn’t turn her back on Bette after cheating and kept in touch with both of them without passing judgment, and that in my opinion is exactly what she’s doing here too. She steps in when needed without questioning. Loved the way Helena took care of Bette, and I can somehow understand why she brought up her advise to Tina about Bette’s adoption of Angie. It would do no good to their new relationship if it came up in a conversation without Bette knowing Helena’s part in it. Thank a lot for two great chapters.
Love when you give us double post!Love how Belena fit together, they’re good for each other..and poor them for dealing with soo much past in the beginning of the relationship. Hope Tina will be gracefull and manage to move on, and have a happy life. Also, can’t wait for Belena ‘coming out’ to Alice and Kit as a couple…Ah, soo much ahead to be excited for… thx for posting!
So excited for them to come out as a couple!!!
LuHstrous: I loved your comment./// Poor Tina was trampled, massacred by Bette in the previous chapter, 7 years of lies, and the poor thing said nothing. So he said: “How am I going to do this, Bette? How do I get over this? ” -“How do I see you with her and not lose my mind? How do I do that? “. Tina only missed ask mercy. Tina was pathetic. I thought it was for Bette and Tina grow as people in the course of this road. More Tina compared with the ORIGINAL character has regressed significantly. I don’t know where is bringing Tina in this story, just hope is well away from Bette. Was said in a NOTE in Chapter 38 that the characters Bette, Tina and Helena are puppets in the hand of the author. I gotta say, is doing an excellent job with Tina. /// Waiting for the next chapter.
Helena pushing Tina to go through with the adoption had crossed my mind back when they were having the conversation and especially because it happened so quickly after but we have yet to see what her motive was in doing it and in telling Bette now. Is she ‘fixing’ everything for Bette? What else does Bette need – I think the next conversation will be about having their own baby. We know Helena loves pregnant women – unless that is not part of her make-up anymore. As I said above I think we are entering the scariest part of this rollercoaster ride so I’m preparing for it with great anticipation of what comes next. As long as Helena is confessing when will she tell Bette that she made up with Peggy and got her money back? If Bette knows she might expect her to quit her travels and stay home since Bette’s ability to function is only possible when Helena is beside her. Even it this is a genuine Bette and Helena love story – which I’m really not convinced it is – their relationship is already TOXIC and they are only a few weeks into it. I think in their future Tina is going to be the least of Bette’s problems. If she thought she was Tina’s puppet she’s about to experience what it’s like to have a master pulling the strings, especially one with millions of dollars at her disposal. So many evil possibilities if the ‘old’ Helena should resurface. PPS and make it a double.
Helena having a hand in making the adoption possible explains why she no-showed the party. My guess is she did it so Bette wouldn’t think she had to be with Tina in order to have Angie. It wasn’t a way to bring Bette and Tina together it was the way to keep them apart. I wonder how much Tina told her ‘friend’ Helena about her feelings for Bette that Helena in turn used to against her to get Bette for herself. The fact that Tina told Bette that she’d been trying to call Helena now makes me think Helena was playing both sides against the middle. Sorry I couldn’t resist coming back.
I am not a belena but I am not a “Bette Helena ennemies forever” either. I always though that Helena and bette are too alike. And Peggy adopting Bette making Bette and Helena sisters. I believe in good influence on bad people to change them. However, now that Bette and Helena are out, Tina can move on and this situation making them a big family. Helen with her 2 children, plus Angie and may be children from Bette and Helena.I dont and cannot see Bette and Helena breaking up. And I am not really looking foward on seing them hurting each other AGAIN!!!Thaank yu for the double posting, Will not complaint if postin more lol.
Just read both your updates. I’m glad that Bette and Tina talked. Am still not liking the Bette and helena coupling. But you are a great writer so will keep reading. Thank you.
I’m loving reading the comments to the story as much as the story :) okay I’m a Tibetter at heart but the story is interest none the less. I have a hard time with Bette and Helena fitting together. They are both alpha strong women who just don’t happen to be alpha strong with one another anymore. I know that we women have our softer sides but Helena and Bette are extremely alpha. In the series I see how Helena changed, she had nobody and nothing to rely on but a few friends like Alice. She had a humbling experience for a while. I think mostly she learned not to use people, well she couldn’t. And I was also wondering Helena’s motives in tell Bette that she prompted Tina to push the adoption through. If I were Tina I would do it to have gotten Bette back soon if it would have help settle things. To be honest I don’t like Bette in this story. Helena is fine. Time will heal Tina’s heart. Hope that she will have the support of her friends as she heals. Not people taking sides but really being there for her. That’s a lot of disappointment to face and have to look on the little happy couple. I’ve been there not a fun place to be.
As I have commented before, I just cannot wrap my head around a Bette and Helena pairing. Even with your great writing! I understand Bette needing to be with someone else but she and Helena are beyond my understanding. Although, they do look good together. My hope for Tina in this story is that she now can grow up and start doing what is right for her and Angie. I think I would put Bette out of the equation after being told that the past seven years of your life were built on a lie. Let Bette go and be her “true” self with Helena and you go out and grab a new life for yourself!
It was what was missing Bette be thinking that Tina has agreed to adopt only to win her heart. Why not also say how Shane won the love of Carmen and Tina followed the example of sending flowers.I honestly do not want to see Tina joining the pieces, when Bette receive “one foot in ass” of Helena. / / / / This is my positive thinking hahahahaha ///// This act would not be any proof of love. Not after everything that Bette told Tina. Please let Tina go ahead without any further more humiliation.
Why did Peggy cut off Helena already? She is so virtuous and perfect! I know, you said in one of your AN that she’s different from the show but you’re casting her so flawless that it’s hard to believe, not as a Tibette-r or Belena-er, but as a realistic person. I mean she has been dealt a major blow
so much of this story reminds me of my own life and relationship with my ex…we had 10 years together where we started hating each other in the end. she moved on and i tried to. it worked for her not for me. i find myself in tina’s shoes i still love her and want her back but she is with someone now and says she is in love with her so what am i do to? i just sit on the sidelines and try to live my life day to day. if she’s happy that is all i can ask. maybe one day i will find my happiness. anyways great story please continue on..and thanks for sharing this great story with all of us who miss the L word like me miss our own families when they leave or die
I just really love your story. I’m happy that it is now all in the open and Tina can start to get a life too. I hope there will be no trouble in paradiese with Bette and Helena.
I really like your writing but I have several problems with the interpretation of Bette. I really don’t understand how you can tell someone that the last seven years of my life with you have been a lie. How can you have a child with this person and say… Oh I only let so much of you into my life. I have no idea of where this story is going but I just don’t think that this is right. I really feel for Tina’s character. She’s like a punching bag that has been used over and over again. What did she do to deserver to be cheated on then abandoned by Bette, then both of her exes get together and she’s suppose to be all smiles and say oh it’s OK as long as you are happy. Way to much for me if I were her I would go ballistic.
