    The Settlement – Chapter 16

My proposed business plan though still in draft form was for all intents and purposes, final.  Of course, as with other endeavors, the plan comprised a vision that may sound grandiose upon a perfunctory appraisal.  An impression engendered given the ‘big’ words and subjective if not vague references that typically peppered these statements.

The objective, stated plainly was to create a center for working mothers meeting specific criteria providing childcare and enrichment programs.  Integrated was an ancillary project for a section of the warehouse to host a library for the children.  After all, although I’d branched out in a sense, my heart was still invested in providing something better for younger ones in need.

Point of fact, it was a personal favored enhancement. Unfortunately, it received lowest priority in the scheme given funding requirements.  My private interest would keep it actively pursued.

Supporting the qualitative vision statement were the practical matters making the plan feasible and attainable.  The details would substantiate the method of making it concrete. These included specifics on the timeline; finances in terms of budgets and funding; construction and floor layout; staffing – both volunteer and permanent; and the like.

The necessary estimates for the required work were secured, interdependencies identified.  Local enterprises and fellow non-profit organizations were to be tapped into for furthering the agenda.  Services for the most part, negotiated down if not partially or wholly donated.

I had asked Bette for recommendations on local artists who would be willing to volunteer their time and talent to make the space more welcoming.  That meant pieces of art, aesthetically pleasing yet sturdy enough to withstand exposure to daily foot traffic inclusive of the juvenile kind.

Paintings certainly, other pieces for the vestibule that would benefit from some casings.  If possible frescos or murals for the larger areas to enhance the spatial dimensions per the defined layout.  Wonderfully engaging ideas that would cost money.  Money we couldn’t spare after focusing on the renovation and learning programs.

Last week, we were gathered at the Planet. The doors closed earlier than usual with shades drawn, the sign turned to announce the establishment closed.  Kit spontaneously decided that night was a special occasion, one that merited the impulsive closing.  Serving customers already seated but politely turning away the rest.  By half past nine all the patrons had left and we were spread out across three tables.
