    The Roommates: Chapter Fifteen

The next thing I know shes grabbing a bag and packing her things. I was following her all over the house because I was afraid she was leaving. We were both crying and I knew that this was it. I knew she was walking out. T, I begged her to stay. I promised her I wouldnt tell Dad. I meant it, too. I promised her I would be good and Id never sneak up on her. That I would call before coming home. That I would make everything okay if she would just stay.

But she wouldnt stay. Right before she walked out the door, she sat me down and told me that she loved me, but she couldnt live her life the same way anymore. She said she was tired of being Melvins perfect little blond-haired wife. She said she was suffocating and that she had to go. She kept telling me that it wasnt my fault, but I was a kid, ya know? I still am. I felt like it was all my fault.

When my dad came home from work, I was still sitting in the chair where shed left me. She was long gone and when my dad came home and saw the mess and me sitting there with tears running down my face, he knew. Thats the only time I can remember him holding me and the only time I remember seeing him cry. When I woke up the next day, everything was back in its place and all the pictures of Mom were gone. We never talked about it again. It was like shed never existed.

I felt so broken inside. Dad was always working and it would just be me at home alone. It used to be that Mom would be there and wed hang out; do stuff together. But instantly, I was alone. Do you know what its like being a girl and growing up without your mother? I felt so alone and I hated her. She didnt even have the decency to call and check on me. Its like I never existed for her. Its like I was just an afterthought, not even worthy of recognition.

I still hate her, Tina. It wasnt my fault that she couldnt get along with my Dad. That was between them. But somehow, Im the one that came out of the situation as the biggest loser.

Tina looked intently at Bette and reached for her hand. She clasped it tightly and said, Wow. Im sorry. I didnt know.

Bettes voice came out low and deliberate. T, I dont want to be like her. I dont want to hurt anybody. A person cant just go around doing what feels good without thinking about the consequences. As strongly as I feel for you, I cant just turn my back on Sidney. I cant do it. Maybe I love her, maybe I dont. I dont know. But, Im gonna figure it out. And Im gonna do it without being a cheater. Does that make sense?

Bette, that makes perfect sense. I didnt understand before. But it makes perfect sense. Just..dont get yourself in a situation where you are the one thats hurting. Dont sacrifice your happiness for Sidneys. You arent your mother. You havent taken any vows. You dont have any children. Dont punish yourself by staying in a relationship that isnt right for you.

Bette smiled at Tina. Thanks T. Ill think about it. I also think you should follow your own advice. Dont stay with Eric because everybody thinks you should.

Tina nodded. I know. I know. Its time I reevaluated some things.

Bette laid her head back down on the pillow. T?

    Yeah?

Its like 4 in the morning. Can we go back to sleep now? asked Bette.

Tina smiled. Yes. Lets go back to sleep.

As Tina snuggled up to Bette, she asked Bette, dont you think this is cheating?

T, Ill evaluate that at a later time. Right now, Its damn near 4am and Im too comfortable to care.

    You sure?, asked Tina.

Positive, Bette replied, as she pulled Tina closer to her.

    Okay, good night Bette.

No, Tina. Its good morning. Its already morning.

Those were Bettes last words before she dozed off. Tina lay there awake just a little while longer. Her spirit felt lighter and more free. Shed finally gotten some things off of her chest. With this weight removed, she dozed easily and felt comfortable in her favorite spot.wrapped in Bettes arms.

    5. I know that I’m commenting 5 years late but I love how this story deals with their uncertainty. And how they struggle to find out who they are and what they are willing to do about it. Hide or be bold. I’ll be reading more to find out what they decide for themselves. :)
