The Nearness of You, Chapter 2
The task of stowing the book done, she turned to the brunette, reluctant to wake her up from her restful slumber. Bette had slid down the seat slightly in her sleep, her head balanced on the ledge her elbow once occupied, her legs rested against Tina’s. Tina had thought to move, but she opted to maintain the innocent contact instead, reveling in the slight pressure. Now Tina gently laid her hand on Bette’s shoulder, leaning closer to coax her awake.
“Bette. Babe, it’s time to wake up,” Tina whispered, slowly stroking Bette’s shoulder as she continued. Bette began to wake up, her eyes fluttering open. She glanced at Tina with a sleepy smile.
“Hi.”
“Hello. Sleep well?”
“Mm, fantastic. Trains always rock me right to sleep.” Bette gazed at her. “I like waking up like that.” Tina blushed slightly but never broke her eye contact.
“Well, you could always sleep at my café, and I could wake you when I come in, in the morning.” Bette chuckled a deep, sleep laced chuckle as she stretched. Tina watched as she tightened different parts of her body, fascinated by the lithe form. Bette glanced over at her as she finished, a smile creeping onto her face.
“Like what you see?” Tina looked away hurriedly.
“God, I’m sorry. I keep doing that.” Bette reached out to her, laying her hand on the blonde’s.
“I like when you look at me, Tina. You make me feel…”
“What?” Tina intently studied her face, desperately searching in Bette’s features for an inkling of the powerful feelings that surged through her.
“I have no idea. I don’t have the words.”
“You don’t have the words?”
“No. Do you?”
Tina sighed contentedly, “No.”
The train jerked to a halt, causing the women to break their stare. Bette got her bag down, and they exited together, walking up the ramp and into the main part of the station. Crowds of rush hour commuters buzzed around them, on their way home and grateful for another day of work done. The streams of people parted around where the women stood rooted, painfully aware that, for now, their time together was at an end.
“Well,” Bette began, “I guess I better get going. Don’t want to miss my plane.” Yes, I do… This is crazy…
“Yeah, my friend’ll be waiting.” Still neither moved. Finally, Bette began to shift, reluctantly heading in the direction of her exit. “A week from Thursday?” inquired Tina.
“A week from Thursday,” promised Bette, beaming at Tina one last time before turning to make her way through the crowd.
“I’ll be waiting,” whispered Tina to herself as the masses engulfed the brunette’s retreating form.
Tina turned and followed the current of people up to the street where she turned uptown, headed for her friend’s apartment. Lost in her thoughts, it was no time at all before she was greeting the doorman and riding the small elevator up to the eleventh floor, all the while grinning as she thought about her future date.
* * * * *
Bette clutched her bag on her lap, watching the buildings creep by as her cab made its way slowly through the heavy traffic. As it turned around a curve in the highway, Bette was granted a view of the city against the clear, colorful sunset. Nothing had ever seemed quite as beautiful to Bette as the backlit city, the black spires rising up into the pinks and oranges of the receding day. Not until today anyway. The smile returned to her face as her cab continued on, her thoughts filled only with the dazzling blonde.

I wish the comment box came with spell-check. It would save me much embarassment. Why are typos invisible till you hit Enter? So Tina owns The Planet? Either this is an alternate universe or a small world. Uh, please don’t turn this into a “Love Affair/An Affair to Remember” deal where one of them can’t make the date because they got crippled being hit by a cab on the way to the date (“I was looking up at the Empire State Building, it’s the nearest thing to Heaven.”). You made me very nervous when they didn’t exchange numbers. So post soon as my nerves can’t take the strain.
This is so poignant. I love it.
im sooo lovin this storyand please dont make us wait till next week.p.p.s.
they both better be at the planet for their date, i don’t want it to turn into “before sunset” or “affair to remember” when one of them can’t make it…it would be sad
Ny, another great chapter from you. Love the story and of course, our girls.
I think them riding on the train gives your story its old time feel. Just lovely. NYGL you have a real talent for this storytelling. You have an awesome sense of humor, too.
This story is very good. I love it. thanks PPS
I am mesmerized by this story. I too need a dictionary but to spell (because some how that skill did not make it into my brain wave patterns). So Tina was reading one of Bette’s books while she traveled. I can’t wait for the following Thursday when Bette walks into Tina’s Planet.
Love the story you are weaving. Can’t wait til next week. PPS don’t wait that long.
NY… as always a great update. I’m sorry I’ve taken so long to read/comment… life… love… got in the way. But I caught up and this is just… well, breathtaking really. The tension is palpable between these two… the connection astonishing. I feel like was on that train watching two strangers (although there’s a certain familiarity about their faces somehow LOL) fall in love right there in front of me. This is such a beautiful beginning, NY… can’t wait for the continuation. And hell yes, the pleasure is mine!!! Oh, and congrats on your nominations… so well deserved, my friend.
I am enjoying this story. I completely know how Bette feels…just the other day I yelled “Stop the Car!” and jumped out with my camera. Trains are much harder to stop. I hope she’ll get back ther to take the picture maybe with Tina. There is nothing more upsetting then missing the perfect picture.
Ah! Everything’s proceeding nicely thus far. Um… I’m so pleased to see a chapter, I don’t even have anything all that creative to say. Loved it, though, post the next soon. I’ll be looking for that BeLena fic… that oughta be really interesting. Thanks for the chapter, NY.
Ann is seeing it way differently than me. I’m seeing vivid colors. Tina’s knees huh? *snicker* I’ll probably skip the one-off because I can.
once again, I am so loving your writing….more soon???
A week from Thursday… I really hope your not going to keep US waiting that long!! You have me completely sucked into this story, although I think a delicate touch of the lips as a parting gesture would have had me swooning! Great writing Kettle!
Just beautiful..Thanks
Yay! this was great to wake up to, aw, I’m liking the sweet slow build up between these two, the chemistry, liking the way you’re writing this partner in crime, blame those belena chicks for delaying your next post, :)
A wonderful story in the making and great writing makes an excellent combination. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I just caught up on your story. I like it! Now, you won’t keep Tina waiting for the next thirty years, will you? Please? Post soon.
Excellent update!! I think this will turn out to be an amazing day starting it off with reading your chapter. I like when Tina catches Bette staring at her when she moves, I’d likely get caught too. Talk to you later, the stitches come out today so I can respond quicker and not take so much time typing out my e-mails back to you!
totally loving it NYGayLady, just wish u’d post more often. now u got me wondering who r the friends they got in common and how many more chapters b4 “Thursday”?
excellent story, I’m really enjoying it :)
I love this beginning….I am sitting here wth the baby trying to catch up on 5 weeks of reading and must say I have missed it. can’t wait for more
I’m absolutely loving this story. Its beautiful. I want them to have their “date.” Although you had that disclaimer I do hope you get a chance to update it soon.
Great story, Kate. Beautiful writing. You should post next chappy soon, you know that? I’ll keep bugging you to post quickly. LOL ;)
I don’t care, black & white, living color, it all works for me. Definitly different with Tina owning the planet. It may have taken you a while to get this to us, but you did a damn fine job of it.
Sorry it took me so long to read this NY, but I was otherwise occupied. Since you are a romantic at heart I know this is going to be a pleasure to read. Will be anxiously awaiting the next chapter my friend.
Good chapter and love it!
