The Nearness of You, Chapter 1

Moments later, to the strains of “Piano Concerto No. 3,” Bette removed the buds from her ears, gracefully winding the chord around the player and placing it carefully in her bag.  As she looked up, she met the blonde’s trained, inquisitive.

“Sorry,” breathed the blonde as she flushed adorably yet again.

“It’s only fair; I was watching you,” returned Bette.  She stuck out her hand.  “Bette Porter.”

“Tina Kennard,” countered the blonde as she warmly and securely took Bette’s hand in hers.  Releasing her grip, she gestured to the bag.  “What were you listening to?”

“Classical music.  Mozart today, a little opera earlier.  I always listen to classical music when I’m writing.”

“You’re a writer?”  Surprise laced her voice, and Bette couldn’t help but smile at the inviting tones.

“Only some of the time.”  Tina gazed at her quizzically.  “I also teach at Vassar College.”

“What do you teach?”  Tina seemed genuinely interested, which pleased Bette greatly, though she couldn’t imagine Tina was capable of being spurious.

“Photography.  I’m a nature photographer by trade, I suppose.  I love it, but I find more pleasure in my writing.”

“Do you just write for yourself, or are you published.”

“Um,” Bette chuckled, “both, I guess.  I write the words as they come to me, if they do, and, on occasion, people like it enough to publish me.”

“Have I read any of your work?”  Tina grinned almost flirtatiously, seeming to warm up quickly once she had some background information on a person, Bette noted.

“Possibly.  I write under the pen name Marina Ferrer.”  Tina gasped slightly, awe replacing the playfulness that had possessed her face moments before.  “Apparently, you have heard of me?”

“My mother used to read your work all the time.  At the end of her life, I read it to her.  It was the only thing that distracted her from her pain, I think.  Your images are so… tangible.  And the details are so complete.  You always paint such a specific picture.  They’re really glorious pieces.”

“Thanks.”  Now it was Bette’s turn to blush, taken aback by Tina’s honest and forthright praise.  Bette was anything but modest when it came to her published works; she only published her pieces when she was sure of their words, of the effect they would have.  However, there was something about this woman who now sat turned towards her with one leg tucked beneath her body, something about her that gave her praise a weight Bette had never felt before, weight that, in turn, made Bette beam and feel like a child being rewarded for their first ‘A.’

    1. “You need to borrow my dictionary?” That one line made me smile so wide…wonderful beginning. Still catching up on your past works, but also looking forward to this journey! Thanks!

    2. I love beginings. I like this one.. thus far. I like the academic, professional Bette meeting Tina on a random train. I can’t wait to find out more about both of them..

    3. It’s intimidating to post a story without knowing where you’re headed, but you’ll also find it’s somewhat liberating. I’m looking forward to seeing where this takes us (and you). And bring on Bette’s vocabulary! I have my dictionary ready.

    4. Someone finally let me finish reading this new story of yours (any idea who I am talking about)and I think it is a very good beginning. You know I love everything you write, so please continue on with this one NY. Thanks!

    5. I am in awe of your writing ability. Vasser, ummmm, sounds like you had fun there. I live to far away from my alma mater U of Hawaii to ever get that feel of the campus life again. Love the story and am bummed that we do not know what Tina does for a living.

    6. This is lovely NY and I can hardly wait for the next chapter. You do like the old songs, I do too, and they always tell such a loving story; as do you. Next chapter please. Thanks for showing us how to fall in love.

    7. Your way with words has got me loving the story already. The imagery, and the ease they have with each other is wonderful. (Nice shout out to Marina as well.) I’m in, I’ll wait as long as necessary between posts. You just take your time, I’ll be reading. Anyway, it’ll help me get through a few more cycles… ;) I’m a ways off ever having acceptance, so I’ll join you in the “resurrection” stage. Thanks for the chapter, NY.

    8. I already love it, first because it’s different, second because it’s good. Why do I have the feeling you could make most if not all of the story happen on the train?

    9. Amongst many things I could say to you right now, let me say that you have this very way of yours each time you start a new story, a way that leave us hanging on the last sentence and desperately wanting for more… So here it is… please more! thanks ;)

    10. Ahh the pressure of posting. It is the buggar that can get you. Hey relax and enjoy we all love all that you write including this new story and I for one will wait as long as it takes for you to post it all. Thanks

    11. Well, of course I like this… you wrote it, didn’t you? It’s always such a PLEASURE to read your stories… (yes, damn it! LOL). Your writing is so evocative… it should be read out loud – it even sounds good. ‘The Nearness of You’… ahh, the title of one of my all time favorite songs. I can’t wait for more… cause I for one know that this is going to be great. Thank you, NY!
