Bette saw the subtle shift in his head and hands as he slowly looked up to find the face that went with the voice. His eyes landed on Bette and just for a second he forgot. He forgot about his dead wife; he forgot about the two kids; he forgot about everything. All he could think was ‘what a beauty.’ This one is simply gorgeous. And just as quickly he remembered and the tears began to flow again; while the sobs took over.

Bette searched Eric’s eyes when he looked up. She could have sworn that she saw a slight grin on his face, even if it was for only a second. She shook her head as if the thought would simply fall away and thought to herself, I think this questioning needs to take place down at the station. Bette exhaled and said ‘Mr. McBride would you be willing to come down to the station to make a statement. I know that this is a difficult time and we will be as brief as possible, but we need to know what happened.’

Am I under arrest, Eric questioned?

Bette, thought to herself, what an odd question. Something about him just wasn’t quite right in Bette’s mind, but she couldn’t figure out what it was. She then began to respond by saying no, Mr. McBride when she was cut off by the sound of his voice. It was strong and virile, not that of the grieving husband that she had seen not 2 minutes ago. She looked at him again and noted to herself, he is remarkably composed for someone who just found his wife dead in his bedroom. Another mental note.

Ok Eric, no you are not under arrest this is just standard procedure. Bette, looked away from Eric to another officer. And with steady eyes she beckoned him to come and stand next to her. Once he arrived at the designated spot, she said Eric, this is Officer, John Underwood. He will drive you down to the station if you don’t feel up to it.
