    The Letter ch. 9

    The Letter

    Chapter 9

The rest of the weekend seemed to fly by. I mainly did things around the house. I wouldn’t dare go in Emma’s room but I did go through Alyssa’s closet and weeded out those clothes that she had outgrown. Since she still had a couple years wearing uniforms to school, she wouldn’t need many new clothes. She probably wouldn’t need new uniforms since she really hadn’t grown much during the year. When Em got back, I would have her gather all her uniforms and get them altered to fit Lyss. If that worked, I probably wouldn’t have to buy any more before she too went to middle school.

Alice kept calling me on Sunday. Dana was asked last minute to do the commentary at a tennis tournament in New Mexico because the person who was scheduled had laryngitis and couldn’t so she flew out with little more than the clothes on her back. When she was gone, Alice was a complete maniac. She needed someone to entertain her and decided that someone would be me. I now know why Dana stays in such great shape. Just keeping up with Alice is exhausting. I finally told her to stop calling me and that we would see each other at breakfast and go out on Wednesday, since I had to go to New York on Thursday. That seemed to pacify her.

Shane popped in later Sunday night with a couple beers in hand. She just walked up to me sitting on the front porch, handed me a beer and sat down. No words were needed. We ended up ordering dinner and talking about life but she was so not Alice. She was calm and it was always great when she came over. She would never say anything but she knew the first couple days that the girls were gone, I was lonely. Her company was always welcomed.

On Monday, I met Alice for breakfast. I had wanted to head straight to work because I had woken with some ideas but figured if I missed breakfast, she would bug me all day. Shane was there too but not too awake yet. Kit hadn’t arrived. Alice was excited about going out and made me promise that I was going to go. Shane, although she seemed out of it, asked where we were going. Alice told her Milk and she said she would probably see us there. She had plans earlier in the evening but she would cut out to go. I was thankful for that. At least there would be one other sane person there.
