    The L Wing – chapter 241

    The L Wing

    Chapter 241

    Narration of President Bette Kennard-Porter

I get through the hour long conference call with CJ. It says something about my powers of concentration that I manage to push this piece of news to the back of my mind and tackle the issues that I need to. The weather is getting worse here and I am worried about my staff in Washington. In the end I tell CJ to send everyone home at lunchtime – earlier if the weather continues to get worse. I am snowed up with my family and plenty of food and drink – I want all my staff to be just as cosy as we are. The professional head lasts until about 50 seconds after the conference call ends and I switch off the program. I take several deep breaths and rest my head on the desk.

My mother really is dead – she died before she saw me become Vice President. She did not die when I was 17. God – why did she not want to see me – what could make a mother not want to be part of her child’s life ? Its actually worse than all those years thinking that she had died all those years ago. It means that she made a conscious decision not to try and get in touch with me – not when I was growing up, not when I first became the Virginia Governor and not when I became the Democratic Vice President running mate. She really did not want anything to do with me for whatever reason. But now that I know who she became I can hopefully do some more digging and find out about her – I know that I still want answers. I know that Tina wants me to just let it lie – maybe she is right – just for now anyway. After a few minutes I get up and sit in a comfortable chair facing the huge patio window – I lean back and look at the snow. The wind is howling angrily and I cannot see anything from the window – just an awful lot of snow – a fucking huge amount of snow. Why did she reject me ? Why ?

    1. It’s been amazing to see how the McCain insiders have ripped Palin to shreds, I’ve never seen anything like it before (Nixon’s crew used to ridicule Agnew, but that pales in comparison). Of course they have no one to blame but themselves for putting her on the ticket. I can understand wanting a scapegoat, but man, this is an incredible display. And the fact that after bouncing between 5 of 6 different schools to get a journalism degree and then being utterly unable to answer the question “what newspapers and magazines do you read?” (that ‘gotcha media’) lends some credence to her being THAT uniformed. Oy! Whether she gets to come back on the national stage depends on how clueless and narrow the GOP wants to remain and how successful she can be at reinventing herself. Talk about deficit spending! Yeah, Alaska has wolves and bears, but the polar bears are swimming for their lives, the brown and black bears are tucking themselves in for the winter, and none of them will be able to get at her if she only hunts from a helicopter. So sporting of her. In the lower 48 we call that shooting fish in a barrel.

    2. That’s too bad, I guess Shane messed it up pretty badly, I love them together though and I hope they find their way to each other again. Bette and Tina are going to have so much fun while snowing in, and it is going to give them the rest that they need and some alone time together as a family. Thanks Ally, I like your idea about how a perfect snowing in should be and yes it’s heaven on earth. If you ask me the most amazing things that you can have in winter are food and sex. Post soon

    3. Bette really doesn’t know what or why about her mother’s past. As powerful as Melvin is/was, she could have been forced to stay away from Bette. It’s really a sad situation. I don’t think I could “let it go.” I would be finding out everything I could, but it would have to be done very discreetly with Bette being the President and all. Shane is a mess and so is Carmen. I feel sorry for Sophie. Greeeaaat story Ally! More please!

    4. My Lord, Carmen w/o Shane and already she has found someone new. Damn that was fast. If she has found someone to warm her toes that quickly, then how long were she and Shane having problems before anyone else knew. What a bad revelation. Great chapter AllyE.

    5. Tell Bette to leave the governor alone, calling the National Guard is the governor’s job. Did Bette’s mother run burlesque houses featuring bubble and fan dancers? Just plain old strippers? Gentile and upscale supper clubs? A little of both? Did her mother think she was doing Bette a favor by staying out of her life? Did Bette’s mother have an attraction to women? What’s the deepest snow you’ve ever dealt with personally, Ally?

    6. Oh, who who who can Carmen’s new plaything be? Bette is going to dig into her mothers past, she won’t be able to help herself. Great chapter, as always.
