THE L WING – CHAPTER 213
Leigh looks up “ You might not agree but I really hope that you do – please don’t say no until you have both thought about this and talked it through -promise me that “
I look at Bette and we nod
“Anything Leigh “
She takes a deep breathe
“Okay – I am pregnant. I don’t think I can have an abortion. I want to have the baby and then for you two to adopt it “

Narration of First Lady Tina Kennard Porter
Bette takes hold of my hand and looks at me – I am looking at Leigh
“You are pregnant ? “
Leigh nods
“Are you sure ?” Bette is struggling and trying to buy time to get her head around this
Leigh nodded “ Positive – I have been to the doctors “
“Who is the father ?”
Leigh looks away “Does that matter ?”
“Yes “
“I really don’t want to have to talk about him ?”
“Have you told him ? “ I ask
Leigh nods “ Yes – he wants me to get rid of it “
“That’s one option “ Bette says
Leigh shakes her head “No – not for me- I am a catholic – albeit a lapsed one. I couldn’t do it “
“If you decided to keep it you know that dad and Kit and both of us would stand by you and
help you find a place and get everything that you needed “ Bette is speaking quietly – she seems just as shocked as I am
Leigh shakes her head “I don’t see how I could – I want to go to grad college and become a lawyer like I always wanted to. I really don’t see how that’s fair to the baby “
Bette gets up and goes and pours herself a brandy – she looks at me – I nod. I need one. She pours two drinks and comes and sits back down beside me. She does that a lot – someone – I think it was CJ asked if it was some problem with alcohol – its not. Its how Bette buys time – it gives her a few minutes to compose her thoughts – she looks at Leigh

Double Ditto on what funnyone wrote. And what? Loverboy couldn’t use a condom? Leigh couldn’t be on the pill? And how does President Bette explain this little caper to the nation? Even if it doesn’t effect her b/c she can’t run again, it will effect her party. Just as Clinton’s dalliances effected Gore. Everyone gets painted w/the same broad brush.
a new scandal to rock the white house! but hey who cares, and i think leigh needs to make the father take responsiblity and so does she. lame excuse for not having an abortion or using BC… love how bette has such a soothing effect on ella and tina…:)
Very interesting and GOOD chapter Ally. I love that you wrote your friends Ollie and Paul into your story. Now to this chapter. I disagree with some of the hard lines taken in the comments. Her age not with standing, I could see how this could easily happen to Leigh given all of the life altering events she has just gone through and is still dealing with. Even an author can write a chapter to move a story on and we as reader just go through these chapters, people just don’t deal with and get over death and life changing events that quickly and easily. Yes, she is not a baby, but her mother was the coene stone of he life and to lose her and gain a VERY public family so suddenly, I could easily see how she would seek comfort and be easily taken advantage by someone. I think that this guy (who ever he is) had the upper hand in this relationship because he is other wise committed and was and is therefore more responsible for NOT geting involved with Leigh and NOT protecting both of them by not using a condom. Although he would be mad (as any father would be) initially, I think that being the “Player” that he is, Melvin will be more understand and supportive of Leigh, because he could have been caught in the same situation. I think that Leigh is in the “panic” mode now and does need to think this through, but at the same time Bette needs to be more supportive so that she will not feel that she is all alone and panic even further. I don’t think that she is being selfish in sayiong that she has thingsa that she wants to do before becoming a parent. EVERYONE is not a good parent. Just because you can help create a child does not mean you have the patience or ability to raise and take of one. Being in her position, Bette does have the resources to hide this situation (she hide the cause of death of her ex and she was part of the military). Oh yeah Azmama, Cliton’s dalliances effected Gore because the general public was just being STUPID and fell into the Republican trap. I am sure in restropect, people would be more than happy to line up to buy Clinton a $5 hoe, if it meant that we would not be engaged in the war and having to deal with having to pay $3 a gallon for gas.
Hey, I may be unemployed at the moment, but if it would make the world a better place, end wars, lower prices, etc., I’d be willing to buy Bill more garden tools than you can shake a stick at! I didn’t know he liked gardening. Sounds more like Jimmy Carter’s speed if you ask me.

Well I am not sure if they need someone for Ella right now…poor Leigh, perhaps Kit can get a second chance at raising a babe…
i think we all need to focus on how great ally writes these stories.I have to say that Ally – you are the best writer on the site bare none !
Can anyone in this story get with someone who is single? Alice got with Helena while she was dating Tina. Lucy got with Jodi while she was with Alice. Tina got with Emily when she was with Bette. Melvin had Leigh with a married woman. Now Leigh is pregnant by someone who is in a relationship? Geez. None of these people have high standards morally. Leigh is in a hard place but she can’t just expect her sister to clean it up for her. Plus, it would be a huge scandal if the President suddenly got a second kid and they are bound to find out all the sorted details of Leigh’s parentage plus that of her child.
I’ve meant to ask you, ally: You named B & T’s baby “Ella”. On the MBs they’ve said that Jennifer Beals baby’s name is “Ella”. Just coincidence or did you know something beforehand? It seems that LuH let “Ella’s” name slip when speaking of her daughter, “Lola” playing w/Ella Beals-Dixon.
Got to agree with funnyone here, Ally. Leigh has definitely lost her appeal… “good” catholic girl that she is. How very thoughtful of her to saddle B&T with her child so that she may travel the world kid and guilt free! My money is on Henry to be the scoundrel. Happy New Year Ally and I look forward to all of your stories of 2008.
Good chapter. Im with funnyone, get that man take responsiblities to this, its not only Leigh in this but his too and why Leigh have to take all the shit and he not in it. Hope Leigh will tell Bette who the hell is him and make him pay. Don’t like man don’t take responsibility, thats not a man thats a coward. Anyway love B&T, they are wonderful family. i agree with funnyone. i had an adopted brother for 38 wonderful years. so i love adoption. i also had 4 children of my own. i cant imagine giving any of them up. but i also know that if your hearts not into it, please give it to someone whos got there heart into it. if i was in my teens (my daughter had a child when she was 17) i would have given it up, (my daughter didnt, so i have a delightful 6 1/2 yr old granddaughter) but it was her choice and all (my other kids and i) of us had to let my daughter know that we would support her in any decision she chose. cuz if your not married its a family decision. tough decisions. dont know that i would want my child in my face at every family function. that would be hard. thx.
Well now I’m grumpy and I don’t even have a rash. I’d always liked Leigh up until now. Why’d you have to do that? Now I find her selfish, shallow, irresponsible and disingenuous. Let’s see: ‘I’m too Catholic to have an abortion, but I wasn’t Catholic enough to refrain from extramarital sex with someone committed to another’. And then there’s ‘I’ve got it all worked out so I can avoid any consequences from my actions and feel free to do anything I want.’ She’s young for sure, but at 21 she’s not considered a child anywhere. While I don’t think Bette should intervene in her role as president, I think she and her family should be making inquiries as family regarding loverboy. Married, committed, or whatever, he too has responsibilties to face in this. So while I have sympathy for Leigh being in a difficult spot (and not that I think she should be condemned either for her pregnancy or that she has had sex), I dislike her for putting all her thoughts first and foremost into a ‘bail me out’ strategy that shifts all responsibility to those who had nothing to do with creating the situation.

Ally that was amazing Bette is just incredible with Ella and Tina, you can really feel the love and the tenderness when they interact, you are just brilliant and getting better every single day. I think Bette is right to have Leigh really take the time to think this over and talk with Melvin. I hope Melvin can temper the Porter fire and be there for his girl. I truly love the domestic bliss that has filled Bette. As always reading your story was a treat.
