    THE L WING Chapter 172

Narration of First Lady Tina Kennard Porter

Oh God this is SO not what Bette needs at the moment. Melvin has another daughter – Bette and Kit’s half sister. My first reaction is to take hold of Bette’s hand and squeeze it. For a long minute no one speaks – Kit looks rightly anxious. She has just delivered a pretty momentous piece of information. I look at Bette who has an expression that even I cannot decipher.

“Who is this woman Kit?” I ask

As soon as I ask the question I get a look from Kit that tells me that the shocks have not yet ended. Kit looks and Bette and moves to touch her hand – Bette gets up and goes across to pour herself a brandy.

“Bette – we have to talk about it “Kit pleads

“Has he demanded a DNA test? “ Bette replies.

    “He doesn’t have to “

“WHAT – some tart comes out of the woodwork from his sordid past claiming to have his child and he just accepts it – he’s SUPPOSED to be one of the smartest lawyers of his generation “

“Bette — -your father is a good man and he is intelligent “ I defend Melvin because its really clear that Bette has taken this badly

“What I was going to say before you jumped down my throat is that he hasn’t had to demand a DNA test because the mother has given him a blood sample from his daughter for him to have tested – the results should be back soon “

“And what does she want – money?”

Bette is obviously angry – it’s hard for her to believe that Melvin could ever do anything that would make her feel the way she so clearly does.

“She wants her daughter to get to know her biological father – Bette – I know this is hard for you but don’t you think it’s hard for dad as well. This is not about money “

“Why not – he owes her years of maintenance payments “

“She is well off in her own right “

    1. Awww, damn! Bette didn’t get to say ‘goodbye’! I was hoping that she would. I definitely didn’t see that coming. Poor Leigh. I just want to give her a hug! I hope that Bette will be nice to her, especially now! Leigh doesn’t need anymore bad sh*t happening in her life. Well, I am definitely anxious for an update! Ally, I have been hooked on this story since I came across the first chapter on Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at 11:36:04 AM. =) Keep it going!

    2. Wow – you can weave a story like no other – the fact that Bette didn’t get to say goodbye to Maggie is quite sad. I liked how Tina could get Bette to see what t is hard for her to see – Ally you are on a roll.

    3. Wow, you are indeed the #1 drama queen on this site. Never expected this piece of drama, something, but not this one. Do so wish Maggie could have lived long enough to see Bette one more time. Hopefully, she left Bette a letter of some kind and also one for her daughter. Post soon please.

    4. LMAO at Jo’s comment! Wow, this chapter really hit home for me Mate. Here’s why…I have this friend that I’ve known for 30 years. I walked to the first day of school with her, holding hands, while our mom’s walked behind us. Her mother died near our last year of college. She just got married and so much of the planning stages, all she would talk about at our lunches was missing her mom. The ceremony, had flowers dedicated to her mom, she wore her mom’s wedding ring on her right hand, and they lit the unity candle in memory of her mother. The reception had these pictures around, and her mom was in SO many of them. In your story, Leigh will likely feel the same way. She’s gained a “new” family, but she lost one of the most important and influential people in her life. Her mom! I hope that she can eventually find happiness with her “new” family, but man it will take some time. I know that in your hands, we’ll have a lot of chapters that show Leigh’s emotions, sadness, anger, and happiness at meeting a mentor like Bette. Now, as for the reoccurring messages we have going (and I know I owe ya one), I was once again blown off my rocker by those that blew theirs outta the water! LOL! I know you’ll know what I mean…LOL! *HUGS*

    5. Ally, Ally, Ally!! You definitely have taken drama to a new level. I was hoping Bette would get to see Maggie before she passed away. I know Bette is stubborn, but I love how Tina is able to talk sense into her every time. I agree that Leigh should meet Kit and Melvin first. It’s a lot to take in, first, that you have a family you didn’t know about, and second, your older sister is the President of the United States!! Great story…please don’t make us wait too long for another update on this twist.

    6. Pity that Maggie didn’t make it long enough not only for Bette to make her farewells, but also to provide a bridge for Leigh between her 2 families. Did Maggie get to tell Leigh before she died? Even if she did there wasn’t a chance for Maggie to make the introductions. Leigh will have a very large chasm to leap.

    7. GREAT JOB Ally, leave it up to you to come out of the wood works with such a twist like this. I think that Maggie was just holding on until she knew that Leigh would be taken care of. It is sad that Bette did not get to see her and make peace before she died. Maybe Leigh will feel welcome enough to become a part of Bette’s team.

    8. That’s an interesting development. Of course the death of her mother is quite awful, but entirely separate from that…imagine as Leigh is about to…finding out this Bette Porter is related to you! Wow.

    9. Intresting chapter and I hope it works for the better with Leigh. Also Bette needs to get over Lucy, Lucy is Tina’s sister and part of the family so she needs to get over it!

    10. Great chapter and all but I can’t imagine Tina would refer to her wife’s father as a “coloured” man in Backswatersville, Virginia. Pretty much in the same vain I can’t imagine the biracial POTUS would hire someone that would hang a Confederate flag anywhere in the White House…just a thought. Great on the drama, though. Good twist

    11. Wow. If Leigh looks like Bette then she’s a true stunner! I feel bad for Bette now. First she finds out she has a half-sister half her age (well not bad about that but it’s a lot to take in considering who the mother is), and now Maggie is gone. I just hope there are no blow-ups for the next while. Bette probably has next to no sanity left anyway.
