    The Journey 39

Greg: “She is here now Tina.” I say as I put the coffee tray down. Tina had often come here for refuge when Bette was away.

Tina: I pick up the cup and pour some strong coffee into the cup and take a sip. I look at Greg but say nothing.

Greg: “Tina, that woman loves you, she always has.”

Tina: “I know.” Is all I say.

Greg: “And I saw her outside with Laurel, they are a match made in heaven. She is not going away Tina.” With that I take myself back to my other duties. Tina and I are old friends, I hope she and Bette make it and she does not mind me taking the liberty of letting her know so.

Tina: I stand at the window, cupping the coffee with both hands when I see Bette practically running out of the garden holding Laurel. My first instinct is that something is wrong but they seem happy.

    All Together

    Bette bursts through the door.

Bette: “You have to hear this” I say to Tina. “Come on honey, Laurel?”

Tina: “Uh Bette?” I am confused.

Bette: “Tee, she called me by name” I say breathlessly. “Come on honey” I say to Laurel. But there is silence.

Tina: I smile at Bette “Bette, she isn’t talking yet.”

Bette: “Tee, I tell you she said Bette twice” and I am holding Laurel still and she now has all four flowers, three roses in one hand and one in the other. “Oh for you, from us” I say proudly as the flowers are thrust forward. “Give them to your mom sweetie, that’s a girl.”

Tina: I reach over to the take the flowers and kiss Laurel then Bette. Laurel easily gives me a pink and a yellow rose but refuses to give me the other pink one. “I don’t know what that’s about.”

Bette: I start to put Laurel down. “Me either but she has your love of the garden Tee.”

Tina: I smile knowing how that came to be.

Bette: I watch Tee and wonder why she seems pleased with herself but I say nothing.

We all sit around the table and eat casually. Laurel sits in my lap as I introduce her to mango and strawberries.

Bette: “She like mango nearly as much as me.”

Tina: “Well let’s hope she doesn’t find as many uses as you do for them.” I say thinking back to the hot summer nights when we made love and cold mango were a feature.

Bette: “Tee !” I say playfully “Not in front of the children.” I say with mock sterness. We eat the fruit and warm croissants. The flowers sit in their arrangement, two with Laurel, two with Tina.

Tina: “You guys seem to be getting on well.”

Bette: “She is gorgeous Tee. Aren’t you?” as I look at Laurel and she looks back at me. She giggles and points.

Laurel: “Bette” and Laurel hands me the pink rose at the same time she says my name.

Tina: I sit in stunned silence. I look at Bette, Bette shrugs her shoulders but has the hugest grin and she brushes a tear away from her cheek, the first time I have seen a happy tear from Bette. Bette makes no move to conceal her emotions. I make my way around to Laurel and Bette and kiss each of them in turn. Bette flashes that famous smile but it is her eyes that tell the real story, the pure joy. I am reminded of why I love this woman so much. Laurel continues to giggle while I reach across and wipe the tear gently away from Bette’s face. Bette doesn’t break eye contact. We hold hands as we watch our daughter.
