The Fast and Fevered Fall – Chapter Twenty Four

Tina stood outside The Planet and peered through the window. She looked at Bette sipping at her coffee, fully engrossed in an article that was in the magazine that she was reading. It had been months since she had last been to The Planet, it was now a place that she tried to avoid, too many memories of good times and bad were housed in the four walls of what used to be her second home.

Tina smiled to herself as she thought back to all the times she had celebrated all of her and Bette’s little anniversaries. The first time that they met, there first date, the first time that they made love, the day that she moved into Bette’s house, and now she was here on the exact date of something else momentous that had happened in their lives. It was exactly two years today that she had arrived at Bette’s house drunk, late at night and asked her if she would take Angelica for a few more days. What neither of them had realised then was that a few more days would turn into two years, and now, with what Tina had to tell Bette, might turn into an indefinite amount of time.

Tina sensed movement behind her, and quickly looked around. She could see Kit crossing the street in front of her and knew that, even though she was considering backing out of seeing Bette, it was now too late. Kit would make her face this particular fear.

“What are you doing, standing out here?” asked Kit, smiling at Tina.

“I’m contemplating whether I should go in or not.” admitted Tina.

    “What’s stopping you?”

“I have something to tell Bette and I don’t know how she’s going to take it.”

“Well, you’ll never find out standing here, will you?”

“No, I suppose not.” replied Tina, frowning at her own predicament.

“What’s the matter Tina? I thought you and Bette had reached some common ground. I thought that you were at least talking for the sake of Angelica.”

“We are, but this is different.”

Tina focus was drawn back to Bette, she took in the way that her hair fell luxuriously over her shoulders, how the muscles flexed in her arms when she picked up her cup of coffee and how her long legs, partially concealed by the table that she was sitting at, stretch out in front of her, enclosed by jeans, that Tina already knew to be Levi’s.

    1. I think Bette’s gotten what it is, and doesn’t know how to deal with it. Kind of like if you don’t actually voice something, then of course it can’t true. I kind of wish Kit could have helped her though. Ah, well. We know what happened next: SF, and Tina further down the spiral. I have to say, citygirl, I really like how this story is structured. The varying timelines, how we can piece together the chapters to see how Tina got to where she did. It’s hard to read sometimes, ‘cos I feel bad for her (and by extension, Bette and Angelica) but it’s a really good story. Right, enough gushing. Thanks for posting, and Happy (belated) New Year.

    2. tina has to stop running that’s for sure, she needs to face their problems and seeing from the previous chapters it doesn’t seem like tina found what she was looking for away from bette and angie

    3. …the addiction becomes the first love…whether that is alcohol, drugs, sex or whatever and Tina’s got it bad!!! How truly sad and how common it is, that the child, her own flesh and blood is not enuff to pull Tina back from self-destruction but I still don’t understand how she was able to run the Centre for Social Justice when she can’t take better care of herself…it’s like putting the problem OUT THERE rather than dealing with whats IN THERE!!! Its crazy behaviour and I’m surpreised it didn’t make Bette crzy!!! I guess she had her baby and her sister and her friends to HANG ONTO…whereas in your story as in the L Word Tina apparently has NO family and NO friends of her own..all her friends were Bette’s friends first…seems strange and I wonder WHY?? great writing, its got me thinking so must be. Look forward to your next post.

    4. This is heartbreaking. Tina needs some serious help…running away from your support group is not the answer…who is gonna be there for you when you are all by yourself? That’s no way to get better or to even get a grip on why you feel so empty. I refuse to believe ALL this stemmed from when Bette cheated. Talking about putting all your eggs in one basket. It took one event to shock her to her core? Granted it was the love of her life being with another woman but there HAD to be other things that contributed to this.

    5. And I thought Tina’s reasoning for moving in with Henry was bad. This is utterly devoid of reason. Tina should have just gotten a shovel and started digging a deep, deep hole to crawl into. Way to Tina, run from all that is good in your life and all that would support you. Huh?

    6. “One day you’ll understand that you deserve so much more than that.” said Bette, quietly as she sat in her levis, staring at the woman who she loved more than anything in the world… and always would. Tina, Tina, Tina, your fast and fevered fall is just about to go so much further when you leave LA…

    7. cg…even though this is so sad, it’s written so authentically that it is enjoyable to read. I especially liked the convo between Kit and Tina. Kit’s a sharp lady. I don’t understand why Tina has to move away.

    8. God, you tearing my heart out, but I can’t stop reading and hoping for a happily ever after…and I know that they rarely ever happen…..tks for posting

    9. Tina, Tina, Tina, running from your problems never makes them go away, their just temporarily misplaced. If she could only see that Bette will always be there for her, and Kit does know some of what she going through. ONly someone who’s hit the bottom themselves can relate. Maybe between Angelica and Bette they can convince her to stay. If not maybe Bette and Angelica can pop of to S.F. WE leave this in your capabable hands.

    10. You can break my heart like none of the other authors can… Tearing my heart out, but it’s so well written that I can’t help but read… still have my fingers crossed for a happy ending, but I’m wary…

    11. Bette should have told Tina what she said. She should be able to see how desperate Tina is and know that she wouldn’t choose to leave her daughter like this unless it was a last resort. From what Tina told her, Bette should understand that Tina has a drinking problem, but from what I read, it doesn’t seem like Bette is getting that…it sounds like she thinks Tina is running from her responsiblities, also known as Angelica. If I were Bette, and I didn’t understand what Tina was trying to tell me (and I don’t think she did), I would have pushed Tina to more fully explain why she is “running.” Also, if I were Bette, I would reinforce to Tina that I loved her and even though we haven’t seen much of each other that I miss her. Oh, and the Peabody’s (Helena or Peggy) should be getting a call very soon from one very concerned Bette Porter. Another great chapter!
