The Fast and Fevered Fall – Chapter Fourteen
As she listened to Tina in the bathroom, the shower still going strong she wondered if she should call Bette. Alice doubted that Tina had told Bette where she was going. Knowing Bette she would be worried sick by now. In fact Alice was surprised that her phone hadn’t already started ringing. Maybe Bette was still sleeping, she must have had a late night, just like her and Tina. Alice rolled over and picked up her cell phone. That was the reason why she hadn’t received any calls from Bette, her phone was switch off. Alice smiled at her on forethought. It was always best to handle Bette when you were prepared.
She switched the phone on. Three missed calls. Alice smiled to herself. Only three calls, she had been expecting at least ten. She listened to the messages that Bette had left. Each one becoming more and more despairing. Bette had guessed right. She knew that Tina would come here, where else could she had gone? Not to Dana, where Tonya would have been there, not to Shane who was probably pining after her Hollywood wife, not to Jenny or Marina, they had their own messed up relationship to deal with. That only left her.
By the times of the calls Alice could only guess that Bette had been up all night. Initially there had been the threats of coming to Alice’s apartment and talking to Tina, of trying to convince her to come back home, then as the night got longer there was the sound of a woman starting to come to terms with the consequences of her actions. Bette had started to talk about how sorry she was, about how she wanted to put things right. Alice couldn’t help but think that Bette was leaving the wrong message on the wrong person’s phone. Still, Bette was her friend. They had known each other for a long time and as much as Alice was beginning to realise her position as being the one caught in the middle she knew that she should at least let Bette know that Tina was safe.
She dialled Bette’s number and listened to the ringing at the other end of the line. There was no answer. Bette always answered her phone, it was something that she was programmed to do. Alice left a message asking Bette to call her. Nothing more, she didn’t want to leave a message about the state that Tina was in. It was best that Bette found that out while they were talking. It was then that Alice’s phone started to ring. She looked at the caller display to see that it was Bette calling her back already.

Oh, Alice. Hard thing, to be caught in the middle. Again, a chapter that’s made me sad, even though I know there’s a brief respite coming. I always love your posts, give us another soon. Cheers, citygirl.
That wasn’t a nice trip down memory lane!! But so good at the same time. You forgot your rule – well can I do one for you?? Thanks, I knew you wouldn’t mind: Rule No ? – Never sleep with a carpenter!
I like Jo’s rule. A lot. And shall live by it. Because I can. Always great, always heart wrentching. Pretty much what I can always count on with you. And that was NOT a nice trip down memory lane! LIAR! ;)
I hate remembering all that pain…regardless of how well you write it…pls next post!!!
You would have thought that the carpenter would’ve been the one to end up with splinters. And they become infected so easily.
I liked the danish 4am kiss trip down memory lane lol :D
When Bette betrayed Tina by sleeping with Candace, I don’t think anyone knew how badly it destroyed her. I don’t think a person can be the same after having their soul mate, their first last and forever screw them over like that… That said, I beleive true love can overcome anything and I think Bette should be the one to put back the shatered pieces of theire life and help bring back the woman Tina once was.
Damn that was sad and painful for B&T. Ok let see whats next, thanks!
i love the show but they do leave a lot of things unsaid and unexplained, i really liked this chapter because i could see what could’ve happened at the end of season 1…anyway, still hope for happy ending :)
You took me back down that dark sad road…I just want IC to make it better in season 4 I want the light hearted group back. I want Bette & Tina back together…I want …I want…I want…
OMG…I don’t know about that being a good trip but I did enjoy reading. That was the beginning of the end for our girls…wasn’t it?pps
get a grip lament, this is just my opinion, and gathered from all the stuff I have read since season 1. I know also that there were differences in the situations of cheating but IMO, it was way wrong of Alice to turn her back on Bette for doing something she herself was doing. Not being a good friend at all, but as I said, there was a level of bitterness still there toward Bette. Peace!
Painful…thank you for reminding us about the terrible pain that Tina went thru with her sense of absolute betrayal by Bette…it is a terrible thing to go thru when you love so deeply and have committed so deeply and I believe it is that which leads Tina to cut a path of destruction thru Bette’s life up to the end of s3…I am hoping tho that during s4, recovery will set in and they will find their way…I live in hope or I have to give up watching the L Word; of which s1 is just about to appear on my screen…the episode with Marcus’ gf shouting at T…NZers seem to love ity, its been replayed 3 times now…PPS
I know how everyone feels about the affair, but I feel that both people bear the responsiblity for the breakdown in a relationship. Yes, Bette made a mistake, a big one, but she is human. She made a mistake, she didn’t do it to destroy tina! I get very tired of Tina expecting her to be perfect..Tina has made ALOT of mistakes, would she like to pay for them for the rest of her life? The thing that really bothers me though from the show, is Alice..who absolutely crucified Bette, when she and Dana were cheating on Tonya. I always thought that she has alot of bitterness from Bette ending their few week relationship, Alice is very needy, asnd she saw this betrayal of Tina as another of her.I just wish people would stop making tina a blameless saint in all of it..she and Bette are human beings and should be treated as such.
Great chapter Citygirl. So loved the way you had penned the trip down memory lane although it brings painful memories to the surface..
I don’t see ANYONE making Tina a blameless saint. If anything there’s a shitload of stories floating around these days where Tina is one of the most evil characters I’ve ever read. This story shows how far Tina herself as fallen not just from Bette’s actions, but from her own. I also don’t think Alice and Dana getting it on behind Tonya’s back is on the same level as B&T and the carpenter. Dana and Tonya were engaged, yes, but they were together for like 10 seconds compared to B&T. *repeating to self* it’s fiction, it’s fiction, it’s god damn motherfucking fiction…
