Marie gave Bianca a nod as she turned to the group. None of them took their eyes off Shane as she spoke. She told them that they better make themselves comfortable if they were going to stay. Shane had a battery of tests ahead of her, and she probably wouldn’t be in a room of her own for a while.

Alice turned and faced her as she said, “Can I stay with her?”

Marie said, “No, you’ll all be able to see her later. Right now the best thing you all can do for her is pray and hope for the best. We’ll take care of her and I’ll have someone update you the minute we have a proper prognosis.”

Tina had let go of Bette and walking over took Alice‘s arm and led her out of the doors leading to the admissions area. Dana and Bette followed behind. Alice began to dominate the walk as she led Tina to the automatic door leading outside.

    Once outside
Tina turned and noticed that Bette didn’t follow them out and was looking at her through the window of the door. Dana walked up and leaned against the wall next to her. She saw Dana start talking and Bette‘s attention left her.

Alice‘s shaky voice snapped Tina out of her stare, “What the fuck is happening? Could things possibly be more fucked?”

Tina turned and looked at Bette through the window again as she answered, “I don’t know anymore! Nothing would surprise me!”

Alice‘s eyes followed Tina‘s stare and landed on Bette. “Oh no, no! Tina!” Alice took hold of Tina‘s shoulder as she stepped in front of her blocking her view inside. “Stop! She’s here with you Tina! She came to be with you. You shouldn’t have blamed her for this!” Alice shook her head. “You shouldn’t have blamed her!”

Tina looked at Alice with tears in her eyes as she pushed passed her and hit the button for the doors to open. Hearing the doors made Bette tense up as she watched Tina storm toward her. She grabbed Bette‘s arm and dragged her outside as Alice took a stance near the wall next to Dana.

    “Are you ok?”
Dana nodded yes. “I, I think so. Are you?” Alice nodded and said, “Come on. Let’s leave them alone and go find someplace to sit down.”

Shane was in and out, or so it seemed. She could see people around her working on her, but her attention was focused on a blurred image of a person sitting in a chair next to one of the machines. A woman was checking the monitor that was directly above Shane‘s head and every time she would move, this person’s image became more and more clear.

Shane finally said, “Why are you here Zoe?” She couldn’t see her because the woman checking the monitor was obstructing her view, but she knew it was her. Zoe‘s voice softly whispered, “Shane, always running off! You left us before I had a chance to give you something.”

Tina pulled Bette outside and let go of her arm to face her. “Are you staying?” Bette put her hand on her forehead in disbelief and said, “Of course I am! I’m not going anywhere!”

Tina nodded along and said, “Well if you are then I want you to go home and take a shower! How dare you come here after being with her!”

Bette‘s head tilted and she let out a sigh. “It wasn’t like that Tina! It wasn’t like that!….And besides, I’m here for Shane too Tina! Remember?”

Tina put her hand up and walking passed Bette said, “Wait here!” Bette leaned against a post keeping her eyes on the door. She watched Tina walk back in and disappear around the corner. She came back a few moments later and handed her Dana‘s keys.

“We’re probably going to be here a while. Bring whatever you think we’ll need back with you.”

Bette nodded and started to walk off to Dana‘s SUV as she stopped and turning back said, “Tina! Come with me?…..I want you to come with me!”

    *****************************************

Shane was squinting as the woman who was working on the monitor finally moved out of the way and Zoe came into full view. Shane smiled and said, “What? What do you have to give me?”

Zoe was still wearing a stone smile as she stood and walked to Shane‘s side. Reaching down she grabbed hold of her hand and Shane‘s eyes opened wide. She bent down and lightly touched her lips to hers. Shane‘s eyes closed tightly and a few moments later, she opened them to a strange woman standing in front of her saying, “Well, well, look who’s back!”

Dana was rubbing Alice‘s back as she pushed magazines around the coffee table trying to read the covers. She gave up and looking back, put her hand on Dana‘s leg.

“I really don’t know what I would do If I lost any of you guys!”

Dana pulled her back and held her as she played with her hair and stared off in thought. “Oh Alice, it’s going to be ok! We’re not going anywhere. None of us are going anywhere!”

Alice‘s head fell onto her shoulder and as she turned her face toward Dana she said, “I love you Dana! I mean, you, you know that….right? I should say that more!”

    ****************************************

Bette was driving while Tina stared out of her window. She rolled her window all the way down and stuck her face out.

    “
Tina? Is it really that bad? Or are you being dramatic?”

Tina‘s head turned slowly as she said, “Oh, It’s really that bad Bette! Really that bad!”

Bette reached over and pushed Tina‘s hair behind her ear. “I’m sorry! I only went there to talk to her. I just had to talk to someone! …….Look, I didn’t do anything!”

Tina believed her, but she didn’t know if it mattered. They pulled into the driveway and walked back into the one place Tina didn’t want to be. Home.

Bette grabbed clothes and headed off to take a shower as Tina packed a bag to bring back to the hospital with them. She was running around trying to keep herself occupied because if she would have stopped, she would have passed out.

She finally heard the shower turn off and walking up to the door knocked, “
Bette? I want to get some stuff from in there!” She opened the door to Bette standing in her robe looking in the mirror. She half smiled as Tina walked in and reached around her to grab some toiletries off the counter. Bette watched Tina‘s cold stare as she gathered things together.

She felt her breathing become quick as she reached out and wrapped her arms around her, pulling her in tightly. She pressed her face into
Tina‘s neck and said, “You have to forgive me!….You have to!…I love you so much! I can’t lose you!”

    ***************************************

Alice‘s head was still on Dana‘s shoulder looking up into her eyes. Neither of them spoke as the tension between them became overwhelming. Alice felt her eyes fill as she finally whispered, “Please don’t marry her Dana! Please…. don’t!”
