The Collaboration – The L-Wank Crew – Katey’s turn
Shane looked around at the crowd of familiar faces as they all looked on with relieved smiles and tears. She looked past Tina, who was blocking her view of the door, as she blinked a few times and could make out the image of Zoe waving goodbye. Shane lifted her hand and opening it started moving her fingers as Tina curiously looked in the direction of Shane‘s attention. Looking back she said, “Hey, can you see me Shane?”
Shane directed her eyes to Tina and let out a soft smile. Tina put her hand lightly on Shane‘s forehead and bent over her looking closely into her eyes. She winked at her as she smiled back and said, “You really know how to get my attention!”
Bette walked up in back of Tina and leaned over her as she said, “We are so glad to see you’re awake. You had us worried to death.”
Alice realized how ironic that sounded and walked over to stand on the other side of Shane. She just stared at her with bewilderment because she couldn’t find any words to say what she was truly feeling. She was just too thankful that this girl, the same girl who she found on the street not too many years ago and who had overcome so many obstacles, had now over came something that not many people can claim. She beat death and to Alice, that made her a real life miracle.
Dana had walked up in back of Alice and leaned her chin on her shoulder as she wrapped her arms around her waist. She too remained speechless as she felt tears pouring out of her. She would do things differently now. Shane would know she was a loved friend who meant more to her then just someone to go bar hopping and have coffee with.
The floor nurse came in and checked Shane‘s vitals as everyone backed up and looked on. She turned to them and said, “I need you all to wait outside. We have a specialist on his way that will be taking over from here but we have to make sure she’s stable. He’ll come and see you when he gets here and has a chance to examine Shane.
Alice looked over to her with an open mouth as if she was going to speak. The floor nurse understood where this was going as she had seen it so many times before said, “We have your numbers on file and I’ll come get you if anything changes.
Bianca was the first to exit the room and she turned facing the door. Bette and Tina walked out followed by Dana who turned to Alice who just kept looking at Shane. “Al? Come on Alice, she’s ok. She’ll be ok, come on.”
Dana walked Alice out into the hall and as the floor nurse shut the door, Tina turned to Bianca. “I can’t thank you enough, for everything. For everything you did for our friend, lunch….just everything.”
Bianca looked at Tina and smiled as she lifted her arm and gave her shoulder a comforting rub. Bette seeing this interrupted, “So, I guess we’ll wait here for a while and make sure she’s stable? Right? Tina? Can I talk with you?” Tina shot a look over to Bianca who didn’t take her gaze off of her and smiled as she said, “Excuse me.”
Alice and Dana were half paying attention to this but decided not to give it any more attention then it deserved. Dana grabbed Alice‘s hand and pulled her into the ladies room down the hall. “Ok, I need you to listen to me. I have to tell you something, and Alice….” Alice took hold of Dana‘s shoulders and said, “What? What? Tell me, it’s ok.” Dana was crying for Shane and felt the shift as her tears were now falling for Alice. She didn’t know how to tell her and was thinking of a way to soften it when “Tonya moved the wedding up! It’s in two weeks!” came flying out of her mouth. I don’t know, I didn’t know how to tell you, I didn’t know if now was the right time….”
Alice felt like the wind was knocked out of her as she leaned against the outside of the bathroom stall. She stared on as Dana fumbled for the words. She couldn’t take it anymore as she threw her hand up and said, “Don’t! Don’t say another word. You don’t owe me anything Dana. I understand.” Alice started walking toward the door and as she reached for the handle the force of Dana‘s body collapsing onto hers stopped her. Dana held her with her face against her back as Alice fought to keep from crying. “I love you so much Alice! Please, please just tell me what to do!”
Alice pulled Dana‘s arms apart and stepping forward turned and said, “I can’t tell you to love me Dana. I can’t make you. You love Tonya, then you should be with her!” Alice turned quickly and walked straight passed Shane‘s room and threw the sliding doors, headed for the Mini. She didn’t even notice Bette and Tina who were now outside as well.
Bette had her head down as Tina leaned against the wall next to the Magnolia tree quietly judging her. Bette reached over and picking one of the flowers, nervously began pulling the pedals off as she spoke. “I see where this is going. I saw the look she was giving you. Do you think for a second that I can tolerate being punished over and over again?” Tina let out a sigh and said, “She just bought lunch for me. I, I don’t know what you’re suggesting.”
Bette threw the flower onto the ground and said, “Huh, she loves me not.” as she turned and started walking into the parking lot. Tina looked down at the flower and followed. “You think I don’t love you? HA! That’s a laugh. If I take a step back and look at our situation from a distance I’d say that you’ve got it backwards!”
Bette whipped around and walked quickly toward Tina causing her to stop. “You’re punishing me! You come over and fuck me then you just leave me there Tina! Do you know how humiliating that is?” Tina moved forward. “Yes, I do! I know exactly how humiliating it is! Thank you for choosing a word that best describes how I feel! I’m humiliated by YOU!
Tina walked back quickly toward the hospital doors as Bette came running up behind her and pushed her passed them into the alley next to the door. Tina attempted to pull her arm away from Bette‘s hold but Bette kept walking, dragging her till she felt they were completely alone.
Once at the end of the alley, Bette turned and pushed Tina up against the wall. “Listen to me. I love you! Do you understand! I love you Tina! I made a mistake. Granted, it was a huge fuckin mistake, but I’d do anything to take it back. I know I betrayed you and made you look like a fool! It kills me that I did that to you. You have to believe me when I say I’d give anything Tina, anything to take it back.” Tina leaned hard into the wall as she said quietly, “But you can’t!” Bette just shook her head and leaning in began kissing her. Tina wished more then anything at that moment that she hated Bette. But, she didn’t….she couldn’t. And as she weakened, she began to kiss her back as she slid her hands up Bette‘s chest and wrapped her arms around her.
Dana walked into the lounge and opening her cell phone, dialed her home number. She was pacing around and wiping tears away from her eyes as she heard the phone start to ring. Tonya answered with a “Hello” and Dana let out a silly laugh as she said, “Hey!” Tonya then said, “Hey yourself! Where are you? Are you coming home? Please say yes, I have the best stuff to show you…..” Dana cut Tonya off and said, “Tonya, Tonya, listen, I have to tell you something.” Tonya fell silent as if she was preparing herself to act sad at the news that Shane had passed away. “Tonya,…..I can’t marry you! I’m, I’m sorry! I don’t love you Tonya! I’m not in love with you! I’m so sorry Tonya.”
Alice was now standing in front of the room Shane was in trying to peak through the little window cut out on the door. Dana walked up behind her and put her hand on her back.
