    The Chase – chapter 26

Bette followed James in a rush only to find Mrs Stone laying on the floor, unconscious. Bette gasped and knelt beside her. «What the fuck happened, James?», Bette wanted to know

«I don’t know… She came in, asked to see you and the next thing I know, she collapsed. Is she…», James asked as he watched Bette checking the woman’s pulse.

«I can feel a heartbeat, but it’s weak… For God’s sake, call 911!», Bette yelled at him, gently stroking Mrs Stone’s hand.

«I already called them», he admitted.

«Then where the fuck are they?», she replied. «Mrs Stone, Mrs Stone, can you hear me ?», she asked softly, but there was no respond. Within minutes, they heard sirens coming closer. «Thank God», Bette whispered softly.

Bette and James heard a commotion at the door and looked up as two paramedics came inside with a stretcher. «Please help her…», Bette wailed. One of the men knelt beside Mrs Stone while the other tried to find out what had happened. He scribbled something down while James talked to him.

«Is she gonna be OK?», Bette asked, worried about the old woman.

The EMTs looked at her and said it was up to the doctor to tell her that. «Let’s get her to the hospital right away», he said. They wheeled Mrs Stone out of the gallery and into the ambulance. «Can I come with you?». Bette looked at them desperately. «Are you family?». She nodded, but didn’t say anything else. «All right, hop in», the EMTs said.

«James, call Tina and tell her what happened. Ask her to meet me at Memorial», Bette yelled before the ambulance doors were shut in her face. She sat down next to Mrs Stone and took her hand. It was cold and clammy. «Can’t the driver go any faster?», she asked the paramedic that was riding in the back with her.

«He’s going as fast as he can… We’ll be there very soon», he replied, looking up from his chart. And he was right… Ten minutes later, they pulled in front of the emergency room. Bette followed the paramedics who were taking Mrs Stone in one of the examining room. Bette wanted to get in as well when a doctor blocked her way.
