    The Chase – chapter 23

At first, Bette was shocked by the woman’s revelation. How could she pretend to be her mother ? Her mother, God rest her soul, had died when Bette was 21 years old and she had missed her since that dreadful day in September. Then, she began laughing.

«OK, I don’t know who you are or what you want, but you are not my mother. So I would appreciate it if you left right now Mrs…», Bette said, not remembering her name.

«Mrs Stone, Bette», the woman replied. She opened her purse and pulled out a black and white picture. She handed it to Bette who refused to look at it. She wasn’t amused anymore and she just wished the woman would go away.

«Please, look…», Mrs Stone asked Bette. She finally took the picture in her hand, hoping she would get rid of her quicker if she agreed to what she asked. On it, there was a beautiful woman, a younger version of the one standing before Bette today. She was holding a tiny baby and smiling at the camera.

«Your father took that picture. See, that little baby is you when you were six weeks old», she explained. Bette threw the picture away, as she had been bitten. She was now furious.

«Look lady, I don’t know what kind of game you’re playing, but I want you out of here right now, or I’m calling the police. Is that clear ?», Bette ordered her, as she walked to the door and kept it open for the woman. A look of sadness washed over her face.

«I understand this news comes as a shock to you… You see, I never intended to bother you, but a month ago, I was told I had only six to eight months to live. I swore I wouldn’t leave this Earth without knowing my little girl. Here’s my number if you want to call me or if you have any question», Mrs Stone told her, handing her a piece of paper with a cell phone number on it. Bette didn’t make a move to take it. Mrs Stone put the paper on James’s desk and left without another word.

Bette slammed the door behind her and began sobbing. Why was this woman doing this to her ? Her visit brought back memories of her mom, that sweet and caring woman who had always accepted Bette for who she was, unlike her own father. She grabbed the paper and tore it in little pieces before throwing it in the waste basket. She heard the door opening and she was about to give hell to Mrs Stone once again when she realised it was James. His face crumbled when he saw Bette in tears.

    1. well talk about a shocker. Can this lady really be Bette’s mom? I mean Bette lost her mom when she was an adult so you would think she would recognize her if she saw her again, wouldn’t she? Who knows. PPS!

    2. Hey ML, Interesting to see that Bette’s reaction was to run home to Tina. Awwwwww!! Loved that. Now am really intrigued as to how this woman will enter Bette’s life again and what changes it will make. Can’t wait so please continue soon. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
