The Blinded Path of Love C.8 – High Up

“And what is it you want?”

Carmen jumped a little, but she never turned around. She knew. She did not have to see who it was to know, she even recognized the scent. She closed her eyes, breathing deeply, taking in that familiar smell.

Carmen opened her eyes slowly, then she released the fists that she didn’t realize were clenched tightly. She wiped her palms slowly on her jeans below her knees.

“I don’t know” Carmen suddenly let out a little laugh, an exasperated sounding “Hah!”

It startled the person a little, but the person remained silent.

“You know, when I was young, I imagined my life to be really perfect. It is very simple, this theory I have. You meet someone, you date, you fall madly and deeply in love. You settle down, and life settles into a comfortable routine.”

Carmen could feel the other person grin.

“That was of course before I knew I was *****. But knowing didn’t change my theory much. But I was so wrong.”

The person stiffened. Carmen could feel it behind her back. When she sensed feet shuffling, Carmen shook her head slowly.

“None of my relationships were like that. ***** always happens, and I tell myself, ‘Carmen, NO MORE no more of this love *****, it doesn’t exist.’ “

Carmen rested her chin on her drawn up knees. She knew the other person was very uncomfortable by the way her feet shuffled and tapped around. But Carmen chose to ignore it, focusing on her story instead.

“But I always came back for more. And each time, I actually believed it to happen, this perfect love story, following this simple theory.”

    “Carmen, I”

Carmen turned for the first time, taking a long hard look at the intruder. She shrugged emotionlessly and took another swig from her beer. She lifted her bottle, asking wordlessly if the other person wanted any. When she got a firm shake of the head, she shrugged again and set the beer down. Again, the intruder tried to speak.

“Carmen, I can’t promise you anything. I don’t even know if I have the capacity to. But And”

Carmen leaned back, stretching her arms behind her as leverage. She stared at the starless sky, feeling quite peaceful at the moment.
