    The Architecture Of Love

We lay down, on the unmade bed, and Shane covers me with the sheets, and I rest my head on her shoulder.
And I kiss the soft skin of her collarbone and we sigh and try to regain composure, we try to breath regularly.
We giggle, a little, just a little.
    All the walls are fallen.
    Disintegrated.
We’re here, I’m here, she’s here, the rest of the world is locked outside that door, there’s only my naked body in her arms, her naked body against mine and God, I love her.
We remain silent for a long time, not sleeping, just feeling each other.
Shane’s fingers caress my hair distractedly as she stares at the ceiling.
“I forgot what it felt like to be this close to someone…”, she says huskily after a long time.
    I sigh.
“I have never been this close to anyone…”.
    We both chuckle.
“We’re always gonna be honest with each other, right?”, I ask her in a soft voice.
She slightly nods, kissing my forehead.
    “It’s essential…”.
I run my hand on her collarbone.
    “Uhm… I have to confess something…”, I murmur guiltily.
    Shane giggles.
    “Shoot”.
“Uhm… The night we went to the movies, and you walked me to my car –“.
“You mean the car that you pretended was stolen?”.
I burst out laughing and raise on my elbow just to look at her in the eyes.
    She’s smirking.
    “You knew?!”.
    She chuckles, arching her eyebrows.
“Carmen… I may have been a basket case that evening…”.
I hide my face under the sheets letting go a muffled laughing.
    “…But I wasn’t born yesterday”.
Another muffled laughing tickles her stomach.
    “I am so embarrassed”.
    Shane giggles.
    “No, no”.
“Oh… Oh well”, I murmur, coming out from my hiding and sighing, “…I so very much love you…”.
“And I love you”, Shane replies serenely, and we stare at each other.
    “And, Carmen?”.
“Yes, Shane”, I whisper in a dreaming voice.
“In time… I may even get to like this mangy cat of yours…”.
I turn my head in the direction she’s looking at and I see Blanche staring at us attentively, rolled up on the desk.
“She’s got her eye on you”, I laugh.
“And that’s her good one?”, Shane asks smirking and I crack up even more, burying my face into her chest.

    NINE

A week later, all I wanna do is to introduce Shane to my bunch of best friends.
Bette and Tina, true historic couple and example for us all, are having a party and, of course, the only thing I want is to spend an evening with Shane and the people I love the most.
We enter the backyard walking hand in hand, and Shane is beautiful in her black suit.
I’m wearing a black dress just to match hers.
    Yeah, a lovers thing.
Tina and Bette smile as they approach us.
Alice and Dana are just two steps behind them, chatting in a conspiratorial way and giggling.
“Oh, Bette, Tina, everybody… this is Shane”, I say.
Bette smiles at her, ducking her head.
    “How to do you, Shane?”.
    “Very good, ma’am”.
    “Please, call me Bette”.
Shane blushes and scratches her neck.
    “Oh… okay, Bette”.
“Good to meet you, Shane”, Tina says politely, holding out her hand.
“Nice to meet you”, Shane replies shyly as they shake.
    “Champagne, Carm?”, Bette asks me.
I wave my hand in the air.
“Uhm… No, I’m okay”, I chuckle, “Shane and I are just gonna have a couple Cokes or something”.
Bette’s eyes and smile widen in disbelief. She knows I’ve always been a heavy drinker and she’s surprised, I can see that.
She turns her head to Shane.
“Shane, did I tell you how very good it is to meet you?”.
“Funny”, I reply, and we all laugh.
I grab Shane’s hands and drag her toward the small orchestra playing in a corner of the backyard.
“You owe me a dance”, I state.
    She giggles.
    “Just one?”.
    “No”.
I put my hands on her shoulders and she rests hers on my hips.
We sway slowly as a soft trumpet plays in the background.
That old Chet Baker’s song I told Shane about one of the first times we spoke.
We’re lost in each other’s eyes and when she finally stomps on my foot, I jolt in surprise.
“Ow!”, I laugh, caressing her cheek to soothe her discomfort.
She looks at me with apologizing eyes.
“Sorry. Now you know the real reason why I like to dance alone…”, she mumbles sheepishly.
I smile sweetly, kissing her softly on her lips.
“It’s okay…”, I whisper into her ear, “…You can step on my feet anytime”.
Shane pulls back a little and kisses me again, deeper this time, gratefully, lovingly.
    “…Just, you know…”, I add against her lips, “…Next time I’ll wear some steel-toed shoes or something…”.
    We both laugh, hugging tightly.
We dance that way for an endless time.
My head resting on her shoulder, her chin resting on my shoulder, her hands slowly stroking my back.
“What are we thinking?”, she whispers into my ear after a long time.
“If only everybody knew what we know…”, I reply softly, my eyes closed, “…then it would be all so easy…”.
She nods her head, silently, then she turns to the orchestra, narrowing her eyes.
    “The trumpet player…”.
    “?”.
    “Your friend?”.
    “Yeah…”, in a whisper.
“The one who said talking about love is like dancing about architecture?”, Shane asks sweetly.
    I smile.
    “Mm-mm…”.
She rests her forehead against mine.
“Well, what do you say we prove him wrong?”.
I lose myself into her green eyes and they look like spring.
    “I think we already have”.

” Don’t let ‘em get to your heart
Don’t lose your diamonds swimmin’ in a lake when it’s only God
The whole wide world feels like a shrine built to the worker bees
Who stole it from God anyhow

Lay it down child Lay it down child And walk into this room

Don’t let ‘em get to your spark
That little light in the back of everything that says this
    Isn’t for madder love
The whole wide world feels like a clan
of mad scientists removing the juice
So they can freeze-dry you and put you in a box

    Lay it down child
    Lay it down child
And walk into this room all made with love for you
    Lay it down child
    You can
    You can
    Lay it down child
    And walk into this room

A hundred candles to make the walls come alive
A little frank insence to sweeten the air just right
    Now take my hand

    And open the door
    And open the door

    Lay it down child
    You can
    You can
    Lay it down child
    And walk into this room
    Walk into this room
    Lay it down child
Just lay it down, lay it down
    Lay it down
Lay it down, lay it down
    Into this room”

    1. I love it very much. It’s deep, sad, sweet and hot. I never saw that movie were it’s based on, so I was really happy that Shane thought about it and wend to Carmen. Thanks for writing.
