The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 8, Chapter 7)
THE ADVENTURES OF BETTE PORTER AND SISSEE GARDNER AFTER YALE (Part 8, Chapter 7)
PART EIGHT: ORANGE GROVE, CALIFORNIA
Chapter 7
Howie was a creature of habits and one of them was to get up early every morning to go meet some of his buddies at a coffee shop for breakfast before going to work. It was my job then to make breakfast for the kids and get them off to school.
On this particular day I looked in on Bette after everyone had cleared the house and saw that she was still sleeping. I thought she needed to let the CAC know that she would not be in for a few days so I went to ask her if she wanted me to call.
I nudged her shoulder. She had let her hair grow long again, into that mass of beautiful curls I used to love to put my fingers through and it was in a lovely mess, all over the pillow.
Without looking at me she said, “Good morning.”
“You can sleep some more if you want to, “ I told her, “but what about your work?”
“I should call.” She rolled over and said, “Will you hand me my cell? It’s in my purse.“
I had put her purse in Mary’s room last night so I picked it up and gave it to her. While she reached in to get her cell I told her I had a busy morning ahead of me. I had to attend a meeting at the newspaper office and then I had a luncheon interview. I reminded her again to sleep all she wanted and otherwise to make herself at home until I would get back after 1 p.m.
She nodded and said she would be just fine and thanked me.
I stopped in the doorway and lingered a moment. Then I said, “We’ve got to talk Bette. We’ve got to get you back on track.”
She nodded and said, “I know, Sis.”
My meeting turned out to be longer than expected and that made me late for my interview. So, I did not get back home until nearly 2 p.m. When I walked into the house I found Bette sitting on the sofa, dressed in the robe I had given her with the pajamas underneath and a drink in her hand. I almost expected to see her smoking a cigarette but she had given that up five years ago.

That’s right, Sissy, it is, was and always will be Tina Kennard. Now you know how Bette felt when you left her for Howie. The ship has sailed – without you. You should try to broker the peace between them. That would be what a good friend would do.
Wooooo I hadn’t expected a new update this soon, but this is great. Thanks I’m going to enjoy my few day’s off. Normally I would take my laptop with me camping but this time I’m not sure where i will be staying. I find it sad for Sissee. I mean off course she didn’t know how drunk Bette really was and maybe she shouldn’t have thought about making love but she still loves Bette. She wasn’t the one that broke off there relationship. Don’t get me wrong I’m not blaming Bette either. If it was possible they both would have wanted to stay with each other but times where different back then. I can’t imagine how it must feel hearing your love of your life cry out someones name and not yours. It must hurt like hell.
Sorry its been awhile since i last commented but ive been behind on my reading, usually by the time i start 1 chapter 1 or 2 more new ones have been posted and i didnt wanna leave belated comments but i have finally caught up and let me just say wow i didnt expect to see tina so soon. i guess i hoped for bette and sissee to perhaps tender an affair once they reconnected after so many years.
lots to say but almost finished lol. as for this chapter ouch for sissee. im not sure i would have reacted as gracefully as she did. as a devout tibetter its hard to find myself siding w/sissee over tina im feeling conflicted i guess thats a kudos to you for fleshing out such a lovely character as sissee. pps im anxious to see where this goes.
techgal, I’m sorry, but Sissee did not leave Bette 20 years ago to go with Howie. Bette gave her up because she thought it was the right thing to do for Sissee and her child. Don’t you remember Bette eventually telling Sissee that it was the hardest thing she ever had to do. I think the next chapter will settle your other issues.
September, Well, I’m glad you could catch this chapter and perhaps the next one too before your trip. No, Sissee could not tell how much Bette had to drink. That’s why she kept asking her and will again. Initially Sissee joined Bette on the couch as a friend, willing to comfort her but being that close to the love of her life, was too much for her. Yes, it was a difficult time for same-sex relationships in the ’80’s. And thank you for feeling compassion toward both characters. You get it too.
Colenickel, Glad to see you here. You say you were behind in your reading. This fanfic is an amazing site because all of the chapters accumulate for easy catch-up. Yes, it was time Bette met Tina but I kind of follow their ups and downs so there will always be plenty of time for Bette and Sissee betwixt and between.
colenickel, (Your second comment). Thank you for your kind words. Actually, I don’t want readers to think they must chose between Sissee and Tina. My story is as fictitious as TLW. I am taking liberties to use TLW characters in my story, just like the other writers are, so readers can get another perspective of them. Otherwise, I have said many times that Sissee is all of us.
Caeleigh, You speak the truth. I can’t justify how you sum it all up from your point of view. It just looks different from my point of view. Sissee is who she is because of her brief relationship with Bette in the first place. It’s all been explained as per how the story has unfolded. Some readers may not get it, others do. I like hearing from both sides so thank you very much for your input.
I don’t know why this should bother Sissee, she is all about sex with no emotional entanglements, indiscriminately, despite the fact that she is married, and was all for having sex with Bette, even though she is married. Love is more than sex, love is commitment and trust and truth and respect, and haven’t seen Sissee offer this to anyone. I think she wants to be able to have sex with whoever she wants to whenever she wants to but Bette is supposed to love only her, even though Sissee is married to someone else. I was hoping Bette would stay away from her. Yeah, her other friends didn’t do much for her, when she needed a friend, but they also weren’t trying to have sex with her while she was drunk either.
I’m a bit puzzled by Sissy’s reaction. I think that she should not have had sex with Bette; Bette is drunk and still so much into Tina. Tehir relationship was not about sex but about love. I hope that Bette can get back on her feet and stop drinking. Thanks for posting.
Wow, I wasn’t expecting another post so soon. Thanks! I’m going to side with Sissee again. She can’t help her love for Bette, that’s her true love, she was just reacting like a normal person, but for Bette to call her Tina, I think made her realize that Bette really did move on and find another true love. Painful as it is. I’m very anxious to find out where this goes. Thanks again for your kind comment. I think your reader numbers & definitely your comment numbers are up. You’re right though, it’s not a typical Bette & Tina story & for that some won’t even give it a try. Too bad for them, great for us! Thanks again!
im sorry but i really feel for sissee, to have one more chance with your first and deepest love who would’nt give up anything for at least five more minutes of that feeling. p.s. your still killing me with this story, great, great job!!!!!!!!
brou
brouhaha, Sorry about the aborted comment above. My phone rang and when I came back I just clicked the wrong command. But, as per your post, yes, you are right. Sissee surely should not have had sex with Bette because it turned into a disaster for her. Please though, just stop to think how bottled up her emotions have been and being that close to Bette would pop anyone’s cork. Could you have stopped? Could I have stopped? I don’t think so. The moment was there to be seized. And yes, their relationship was about love and what better way to express one’s love than by the inevitable physical way.
well, no ones ever gonna replace tina…that was desperate and too sad…
annieb69, Anyone with a 69 in her name has got to understand that sexual feelings sometimes transcends common sense. Thank you for saying it like it is, that, “…to have one more chance with your first and deepest love…” You get it too!
kbergin47, Seeing your name here always makes me smile even before I read your comments. I know I can count on you for your support. As for posting another chapter so soon after the last one, well, I will tell you a little secret. I have a criterion and that is to post another chapter after 300 hits as soon as I find time for it. As you well know, it sometimes took a week to get there but lately I have been lucky. The next and final chapter of the After Yale series will be posted sometime today when I can work it in. And by the way, you are indeed, one of those who “gets it” with Bette and Sissee. Thank you so very much.
