The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 5, Chapter 3)
PART FIVE: PHILLIPS, WISCONSIN
Chapter 3
“I do love you, you know,” said Howie.
“Howie,” I said, finally speaking up. “It’s just too late to go there.”
“Not for me it isn’t. I’ve really misched you a lot.” He was starting to slur his words. “In fact, I feel….well, I’m lost without you. I guess I jus’ took us for granted. We were comfortable together. It’s like you were always spose to be in my life. Like we had a future together. You and me….. and I never felt that way about any other woman.”
“You don’t understand,” I said. “I’m in a committed relationship with Bette.”
There, I said it and lifted the Jack Daniels bottle up in the air as if to toast to her and took another short sip, tossing my head back with a shake, as it burned all the way down.
“Auck!” He waved his hand in the air. “What is that ever gonna get you?”
“Everything.”
“I don’t believe it.”
“Believe it.”
“It’s not real!”
“It is to us.”
“It’s beyond my comprehension.”
“Howie, I’m not asking for your blessings. It is what it is.”
“Did you ever care about me?”
That came out of left field. I had to think a moment, not whether or not I ever cared about him because I know I did, but I had to be careful how to answer it. My mind was running slow. I was definitely feeling the booze. I was almost feeling weak, even dizzy. I suddenly even got very warm and wanted to unzip my jacket but I did not because he might misunderstand.
I collected my thoughts and said, “I’m sorry but why can’t you understand? Whatever I felt for you is over.”
I looked at him and spoke again, as if in slow motion. “Can we jst not talk about it…. anymore?” I was slurring my words too.
Disgruntled, he leaned back in his chair. I put the bottle on the floor and leaned back too. We were silent for a long time. I could hear him snoring softly and I dozed off and on.
And then the motor stopped. We had run out of gas. I saw that it was just after midnight. Soon the lights would go out.

Well, since most people in committed relationships wouldn’t go driving off into the blue with their ex boyfriends, let alone what happened..I don’t imagine Bette would take any of it very well at all, nor should she.
susannah2000, While I appreciate your taking the time to write a comment, I am guessing you didn’t read earlier chapters which I feel clearly justifies Sissee making a trip with Howie, in as much as it was planned long before Bette and Sissee reunited and Sissee’s entire family is counting on her being home for Christmas.
And oh yes, susannah200, have you ever tried to rebook a last minute flight at Christmas time?
Obviously you feel that way or you wouldn’t have written it. I however stand by my comment. As a matter of fact I have read the earlier chapters, but I don’t think total agreement with every story point is required for commenting. I could be wrong.
Oh, Susannah, Of course you don’t have to agree with my every story line and again, I do appreciate your posting but I hope you don’t take offense at my defending those same story lines when they seem to be misunderstood or found unacceptable.
Well, I’m quite concerned that Sissee doesn’t recall all that happened in the back seat. This isn’t going to be pretty. Hope she can get ahold of Bette soon. Can’t wait for more!
kbergin47, She will connect with Bette of course but it won’t be easy in more ways than one.
