The Adventures Of Bette Porter and Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 4, Chapter 10)

The Adventures Of Bette Porter and Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 4, Chapter 10)

    PART FOUR: NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA

    Chapter 10

We split early Monday morning and would not see each other until Wednesday at 4 p.m. at my house, when she and her mother would arrive for cocktails. We had to settle for exchanged telephone calls until then.

Bette had business-oriented Christmas parties booked every night this week, except Wednesday. She asked me to join her on Monday night but I had to beg off because I had some serious Christmas shopping to do, particularly for her. I had a specific item in mind and hoped I could find it.

Her mother arrived at LAX as planned and Bette was absolutely thrilled with her visit. She explained to me that Maxine’s husband, Bob Brady, had grown-up children from a previous marriage, who all lived in Chicago, so it was decided that he would spend the holidays with them and Maxine would spend them with Bette and Kit in the Los Angeles area.

Each time Bette called me, I asked her if she had told her mother about being gay and the answer was always negative. Finally she said she was going to tell her at my house on Wednesday night, whenever the time seemed right. She did not really ask me to participate in the revelation but I figured she needed the comfort of an ally in the room when she told her.

She had informed me that her mother’s choice of drink was Bushmills Irish Whiskey on the rocks so I bought a bottle plus a set of four new cocktail glasses. Bette and I decided we would drink vodka tonics which I had to buy the ingredients for.

I also bought some fresh, peeled shrimp and cocktail sauce, including a fancy dish to put them on and a can of lumpfish caviar, crackers and processed cheese wedges.

I had not really decorated for Christmas since I was going to be gone but I picked up a small, pre-decorated tree plus several red and green table clothes which I used to cover the sofa and matching love seat as well as the coffee table which I put back in its original place with the appetizers set up on it.

    1. bettyvhall, Thanks for your comment. The Bette we know now is her mother’s age then, back in 1985, after Yale and that would put her mom now in her 60’s today, where I will bet you she is still beautiful. The L Word missed a great opportunity for a story-line when they decided that her mother is dead.

    2. techgal, I am so glad you are still with us. As for the era, no, it is written about 1985. People still smoked then. If you think the reference to Ava Gardner dates it, well I googled a Most Beautiful Actress list and when I saw her name I thought she, in my opinion had classic beauty, way over the rest of them and would surely make a beautiful Maxine. I have read your reference to the time line before and know it concerns you. I will have to work on that for your sake but it makes me wonder if you witnessed that Beatnik Generation, you referred to.
