The Absence of One chapter 35

“In that case, you’re in for a treat,” Bette purred. Two can play this game, Kennard. “I know Kit just added new items to her menu the other day so lots of opportunities for you to expand your palette.”

Tina narrowed her eyes. Bette’s words were like a cold shower. “I tend to stick with what I like.”

“People change, Tina,” Bette said nonchalantly as she perused the menu. “Here, you should try the Marguerite pizza. I don’t know what the chef does differently but it is heavenly.”

“Let’s share. I don’t think I can finish it on my own,” Tina offered.

Bette shrugged. “I’m game if you are.”

Tina knew a whole different conversation was taking place, and she was determined to meet it at every turn. “I don’t mind trying new things with you. I know you won’t steer me wrong.”

She was well aware of their flirting. “Just remember you said it on your own volition.”

“This is nice,” Tina commented as they waited for the food to arrive.

Bette nodded, offering nothing in return.

“Have you decided on Angie’s school? I really want to hand in the application early,” Tina tried to draw her out.

It took awhile for Bette to respond. “Let’s take a look at one more place before deciding.”

She mentally berated herself for bringing it up. “Where else do you want to check out? We’ve looked at tons of places!”

“Just one more?” Bette dipped her head, smiling in triumph when Tina acquiesced. “We can go after lunch if you’re free.”

“What a tough choice: Go back to work or spend more time with you,” she pretended to consider her options. “Whatever will I choose?”

Bette was saved from replying when the waitress returned with their food. Quietly eating, Bette let the familiarity wash over her. The only thing missing from the picture was the presence of Angelica.

“Can we go in your car?” Tina pushed.

“Uh, sure.” This push and pull was beginning to take its toll on Bette. Her heart and her mind once again were telling her an old story. She knew how the old story ended, and she didn’t like it one bit.

    1. I’ve missed this story… It’s interesting to see how much they’re progressing, but how Bette thinks she and Tina are regressing. Thanks for posting another chapter, and I hope to see more from you soon. Cheers
