The knock on the door was unexpected but not unwanted. Placing her wine glass down she got up and took in a deep breath. Nervously she ran a hand through her hair and headed for the door.

Without bothering to see who it was, who she thought it was, she threw open the door.

It wasn’t disappointment that she felt at the sight of Helena Peabody standing on her porch. There was confusion and if she were to acknowledge it, a bit of relief, but she wasn’t about to analyze her feelings tonight.

“Helena…” she muttered her tone neither warm nor cold. Neutral would be the apt description.

“Is Alice here?” Helena asked hunching her shoulders and seeming to fold into herself if that were possible.

Bette frowned taking the time to appraise Helena.

Helena’s hair was pulled back into a sloppy ponytail leaving her face exposed. Her eyes were dark; almost a cobalt color, and bags were clearly visible above taut cheekbones.

    Helena did not look good.

And what confirmed it was the fact that Helena was wearing sweats. Surely they were Alice’s because they were sweats with little skulls and bones on them and a coffee stain over Helena’s left breast.

“Come in,” Bette found herself saying.

    Helena shook her head.

“I suppose she’s not here, then? I…well. Okay. I’m sorry to have bothered you, Bette,” Helena muttered turning away.

Bette reached out and caught Helena’s wrist.

“Come in,” Bette all but ordered tugging Helena forward.

“I don’t want to be a bother,” Helena muttered holding her ground.

“Why are you looking for Alice?” Bette asked still holding Helena’s wrist in her hand.

“I’ve lost my keys and I can’t seem to find Alice,” Helena mumbled a look of chagrin on her bowed face.

“Well that settles it,” Bette announced as if spoke like this to Helena everyday, “you’re coming in. I was just having a glass of wine. And you can crash on my couch. Alice looked pretty cozy with Tasha tonight so I doubt she’ll be back anytime soon.”

Bette wasn’t sure why she said it, because the truth was she had a key to Alice’s place, and yet she hadn’t even bothered to offer the use of it to Helena.

    1. Speed Racer, Nice story! I’ve been waiting about a month for the resolution to the cliffie from “Say It Like you Mean It.” This is a great Bette/Helena interlude and very possible. I just loved the way you let them bait each other in “Mean It.” Hope you haven’t given up on that one. I know it’s often hard to get to post when you have that real life thing going on, but hope you have time soon! Thanks for writing!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2. Hey SR, Great intro for what promises to be an interesting and humorous tale. Loved the ending as both gals stood shouting their respective mantras. I can’t wait until you continue this story as it illustrates your terrific talent. Many thanks, Your Loyal Fan.

    3. speedy hun, did I ever tell you that you ROCK! I mean, you could write a story about George W. and his teddy bear and I’d still be captivated by it! Awesome! I think this is the 2nd story you should continue (after Say It :p) Speaking about Say it. I’m VERY eagerly waiting for the next chapter ;)

    4. I haven’t read it yet but had to make comment. Thanks for the “crumb” I know it will be filling and thanks to JaneC for tipping me off on another site that Speed_Racer has posted a story. Now I will go read ;-)

    5. Thanks for the story. If only the writers of this show could have one tenth of the insight you have into Helena our favorite season 2 bitch. Great interaction between the two. Very much in character to both. Now I’ll go read it again about two three more times.
