Talk to Me of Mendocino ~ Chapter 5
“I practiced for weeks,” Raph clarified.
“Every month, the aunts and our mothers had dinner and played poker at Mama B and Jodi’s house. One night, Raph, when he should have been in bed stepped to the table, took an empty seat, and announced that he wanted to play cards. When he grabbed the deck of cards and demonstrated his fancy card shuffle, Aunt Alice was so surprised that she dropped her glass on the floor. The sound of the shattering glass startled Aunt Kit, who emptied the bowl she was placing on the table on to Aunt Shane, who jumped up to avoid the falling popcorn, which made her chair fall backwards towards the working model of one of Jodi’s sculptures which Mama B protected by pushing the chair away, but she landed on top of the chair and a finial gave her a black eye.”
“I remember the black eye! It was ugly.” Meka told Raph, “Angie’s right. You should warn him that Mama is still angry.”
While they were laughing at the story, Serafina looked at Raph, “Teach me to play poker.”
“Oh no. You heard what happened.”
“I promise I won’t learn to fancy shuffle.”
“Ask you mothers and if they say it’s okay, I’ll teach you when you’re older.”
“I’m old enough.”
“When you’re seven.”
“That’s two whole years,” the child whined.
“And only if you mothers’ agree.”
The little girl was about to begin her negotiation but was interrupted by her nanny, “Serafina, we have to leave now. Your mother is waiting for us.”
“Just a little longer?”
“No, we need to leave now.”
“But Angie may need me,” she explained. She turned to Angelica, “Mama said you might be sad because you loved Jodi and that there might be times that you would remember you missed her.” Serafina looked at Angelica, her face scrunched with concern “Are you sad?”
Sometimes Angelica was surprised at the depths of her feelings for the sister she barely knew and with whom she shared no blood tie. She squeezed her tightly and kissed her forehead, “Sweetie, I’m not sad.”
“But you might be later?”
“Feeny, you don’t have to worry about me, okay?”
Serafina nodded, “Mama said that I couldn’t make the sad go away, but that you might want a hug sometimes.”
“I’m sure that I will want a hug.”
“What if you want a hug and I’m not here?” the little girl asked, her worry real.
Meka announced, “You can stay in our room and give Angie a hug whenever she needs one.”
“May I?” Serafina asked her sister.
“Mama would miss you too much.”
“I’ll ask her.”
“C’mon Angie. She’ll still be nearby,” Meka winged.
The nanny shook her head “no” as she interrupted, “The motel is 12 miles away.”
“Motel?” Raph asked.
“The Motel 6.”
“You couldn’t get a room?” a surprised Meka asked. Before the nanny could answer, Mekalya jumped up. As she ran towards the lobby, she called behind her, “Maybe they haven’t given my room away!”
Meka and Raph had no idea of the mini Pandora’s Box they had opened. Ms. Cheryl was worried because she knew that she was supposed to get her charge back to their motel. Tina had been very specific with her instructions. Angie’s stomach dropped. She tried desperately to think of a way to stop the runaway train but could only think of stating her fears, which she couldn’t. After all, she wasn’t sure, but even if she had been, it would be difficult to tell Meka and Raph that she thought that, even after two decades, her Mama T had never stopped loving their Mama B. Angelica thought the most complicated part of her thoughts was that she was certain that her Mama B knew.

Serafina couldn’t be any cuter if she tried. I think Tina will likely be delighted to take up Meka’s offer to stay at the hotel… Pandora’s box has been opened indeed. Thanks for posting :)
