    Strictly Roommates – Chapter 7

Truthfully, Bette could not stomach the idea of Alice directing her usual antics at Tina.  Tina, who was so fragile right now.  So beautiful.  So undeserving of a hard time.  Especially now.

Bette was broken from her reverie by Shane’s appearance.  Alice was all too eager to share the news.

“Shaney! Guess who’s a lezzie?  Bette’s new housemate!  You should go for it, Shane.  You should totally go for it.”

Bette, who had been staring into her coffee cup, involuntarily jerked her head upwards.  She wasn’t expecting that reaction from herself, but hearing talk of Shan and Tina caused her heart to drop.  Shane could, and often did, pull any girl she set out for.

    “No!” Bette yelled reflexively.

The girls looked at her with surprise.

“Why the hell not?” Alice asked.  “Is she seeing someone?”

“No… No, she’s not.” Bette shifted uncomfortably.

Shane studied Bette’s face with a newfound understanding, and spared her from the questioning glares of their other friends.

“No, I know what Bette means.  Tina’s new here, and what she needs is friends.  Not that awkward next-day shit that I’m known for.  It’d make things weird for all of us.  That’s what you meant, right Bette?”

Bette picked up her cue from Shane.

“Um, yeah.  Yes.  That’s what I meant.”  She looked down at the table.

    “Good point,” Dana shrugged.

“You know, I should get back.  I told Tina I’d show her around West Hollywood today,” Bette excused herself.  Shane stood as well.

“Yeah, I have some errands to run. I’ll walk out with you.

Bette and Shane said goodbye and walked out of the Planet in silence.  Once outside, Shane lit a cigarette and they stood quietly for a moment.

“Bette, I just want you to know that I’d never step on your toes.  You have to know that.”

“I’m sorry.  I don’t even know why I reacted like that,” Bette said, ashamed at her outburst.

    “Yes you do.”

    They fell silent again.

“Please don’t tell the others,” Bette said quietly.

“Of course.”  Shane squeezed Bette’s shoulder as a sign of support.

After parting ways, Bette waited until Shane pulled away before climbing into her own car.  She took a minute to catch her breath, hands gripping the steering wheel.

She was surprised by the sudden, gripping feelings.  She hardly even knew Tina; she just didn’t want Tina with any of her friends.  Or anyone else, period.  It’s just a crush, she told herself.  A silly crush.

Bette resolved that she would squash these feelings before they progressed any further.  She would focus on being the type of friend her new roommate needed right now.

This, of course, would prove harder than it seemed.
