    Strictly Roommates – Chapter 15

“Bette… Look, I’m not really sure what’s going on here.  I mean, I have a pretty good idea, but… the point is, Tina’s devastated right now.  Maybe you should just… wait a while.”

“Wait a while?” Bette asked indignantly. “For what? Her to finish moving her stuff out of the house?  Wait until she and Brenda are serious? Or maybe I should wait until she realizes she absolutely hates me, is that what you’re suggesting?”

Shane knew that Bette was only lashing out at her because she was mad at herself.  For that reason, she continued to talk to Bette calmly.

“What I’m suggesting,” she said slowly, “is that Tina wouldn’t have spent the last two days crying if she really wanted to move out.  If she hated you, she’d be walking around here cursing you.  This doesn’t really look like a person who’s had a falling out with a friend.”

“Then what does it look like?” Bette asked softly.

Shane sighed deeply, then met Bette’s gaze.  “It looks like a broken heart.”

Bette understood what Shane was suggesting.  She didn’t know whether Shane had evidence of Tina’s feelings, but if she had to guess she’d say it was intuition.  She didn’t want to waste another minute asking questions, though.

“Just give me five minutes,” she said to Shane, backing into the hallway.  Shane nodded.

Bette walked carefully down the hallway, as if she could ward off calamity by sneaking past it.  When she got to the door of the bedroom, she took a deep breath and tried not to start crying.  She knocked softly on the door.

“Tina?” she said softly, resting her temple against the wood of the door.  She heard the mattress creak as Tina sat up on the bed.

“Go away, Bette,” Tina said, and her voice sounded defeated.  It was the strangled sound of a voice that had just come down from a crying jag.

“Tina I’m not going anywhere until you let me talk to you.  Will you please open the door?”

When Tina didn’t respond, and Bette could hear no movement from the inside of the room, she sank down onto the floor, with her back resting against the door. She opened her box beside her.

    1. Bette’s confession was rather sweet, but sad. At least the truth is out, or one side of it, anyway, so that’s one hurdle jumped. The ball’s in Tina’s court now. What will she say or do? Lovely story, atlas. Thanks for the post. :)

    2. Sniff! I’m really glad Bette found her lost words :-) A little honesty goes a long way in this situation, helps Tina understand why Bette said and did those things. I think you accidentally misplaced the rest of this chappy tho :-) Thanks atlas!
