Chapter 11: Melvin’s surprise visit

Los Angeles, Present Day Tina POV

I decided that I needed to get out of my apartment for a while so I went for a run to help me get an order in my head. Kit had to get to The Planet but said that she would drop by later to continue our talk which I was very relieved about. I knew I was going to that opening and nothing was going to stop me. I run for about an hour and find a nasty surprise waiting outside my apartment when I got back. Melvin Porter was standing at my door

“Melvin” Melvin and I have never seen eye to eye about anything especially about Bette. All I was thinking was what did he want “What do you want” I let him my apartment. I knew this would probably end in an argument like every one of our conversations had in the past

“I want a word with you” This could only be about Bette, this I have to hear “If and when my daughter comes back to the States I don’t want you or your friends to come anywhere near her” I couldn’t believe this “I have found a suitable husband for her” I snigger, Melvin could never get it into his thick skull that Bette was gay “I know she’ll be very happy” I snigger again and shake my head

“You are so fucking ignorant” Melvin looks at me with a startled look, this was the final straw I wasn’t going to let Melvin control Bette’s life “Bette is a lesbian she likes women not men” Melvin shakes his head

“It was a stage, I imagine she’s grown out of it by now” I was so close to punching him I didn’t know if I could control myself much longer

“You just don’t get it Bette is gay, always has been and always will be” I know Melvin will let me say my piece then he’ll come back with some fucking dim witted, homophobic comment about me and my friends “Being gay isn’t a stage, it’s a lifestyle a lifestyle which you completely block out because you’re so fucking ignorant and thick skulled to what’s in front of you” I didn’t take any of Melvin’s bullshit, neither did my friends and I know for a fact neither did Kit or Bette “Fucking grow up Melvin and accept Bette is gay and that she had a loving, meaningful relationship with me because if you don’t then you’ll lose Bette and Kit for good and I know that’s not what you want” Melvin just stood there in shock, I am so confident that, for once, I’m going to win an argument with him
