    Soul Singing 16

“I wont care if I never see a white wall again,” Dana muttered as she and Alice briskly walked down yet another white-washed hospital hallway.

“White wall? Just about anything white is on my no-list now,” Alice replied, jogging slightly to keep up with Dana. “From now on it’s all brown and blacks for me I wonder if you can get brown toilet paper?”

“Only you would ever wonder such a thing Alice.” Dana’s tone didn’t change, however Alice‘s comment had caused Dana to smile somewhat, and that was all the blonde had hoped for. “Which room did the doctor say Howie was in?”

“Room 208. We’re almost there.” As she spoke Alice brought her hand down to catch Dana’s, tightening her hold in a supportive way. Dana quickly gave Alice a small smile before turning her attention once more to the door numbers that they were walking past, not once letting her hand leave its position in Alice‘s.

“Room 208,” Dana breathed quietly to herself before slowly opening the hospital door. The room inside was a much darker cream colour, and the glow from the muted television which hung in the corner of the room caste gloomy shadows across the walls. It wasn’t a friendly place.

    “Sis!”

Alice was quick to see the look of shock register suddenly on Dana’s face. It was only there for a split-second, but it was enough to realise that Dana wasn’t quite ready to accept Howie’s condition. She had gone into that hospital room expecting to find Howie bedridden and lethargic, lacking any emotional or physical willpower. And while he was bedridden, the lively way Howie had called out, and the sly grin that was plastered on his face when he had seen Dana proved that he was anything but defeated mentally. And somehow this was making it harder for Dana to accept what had happened because surely, if Howie was so happy and confident, how could he not just be his old normal self?

“How,” Dana croaked as she walked over to the bed and gave her brother a tight hug, forcing the tears in her eyes back to where they were unseen. “You look great.”

“I’ve been better,” he grinned, hitting Dana lightly on the arm. “Thank god you came, mom and dad have been driving me crazy you’d think I’d been hit by a car or something”

    1. I’ll ignore your evil taunt that you might just keep them apart a little longer – this time. This was so very needed, especially after hearing Erin’s podcast. I loved Alice’s confession and Dana’s response. They are meant to be together. You Gabby is also a fun character. Thanks so much!

    2. Everything about this story is great, I love that Alice is a rockstar, and not easily trampled on. Pulling all of the characters in while changing the story but keeping their personalities Brilliant! F-ing Brilliant.
