Chpt. 19 Interview with a vampire

Tina opened her eyes suddenly recognizing the voice. But how could it be?

“Well, aren’t you gonna hug your mother hello, Christina?”

Tina walked tentatively as her mother’s face came into focus.  She stopped for a moment before wrapping her arms around her mother’s neck.  Tina was much taller than the diminutive woman, having inherited her father’s stature.

“Now, who is gettin’ married.”

“You know very well that I am Mama. I called you this morning. Stop playing games.What are you doin here Mama? I thought you told me you’d have no part of this when I talked to you.  Look, if you’re here to try and stop me then you’re wasting your time. I’m marrying Bette whether you like it or not.” Tina’s North Carolina accent seem to come out of its shell more when she spoke to her mother and aunts.

Bette looked at the blonde in wonder not knowing that she had spoken to her mother already. Tina looked at her and conveyed her regret in not telling her sooner.

“Christina would you hush a minute? I know what I said and I’m…I’m sorry.”

“You’re what?” Tina could not believe what she was hearing.  She could not remember a time when her mother had apologized to her about anything, not that she had cause to many times. There had to be a catch.

“I was wrong Christina.  I guess you think I’m some kind of hypocrite for being against her because she’s a vampire considering everything but it’s just that I know what they are, how they are and…I was afraid for you.”

“Mama, Bette isn’t like that. You weren’t a vampire long enough to be…well calm and as normal as it is possible to be after a few years.  It’s almost five years for her and she doesn’t feed off of people. She’s not a monster and…” The brunette just stood there as if she was invisible and allowed the two women to speak about her. The others looked on with their mouths open watching it all unfold.

The older woman felt the need to interrupt her.  “Christina. I know.  Alice called me.  In fact she had me on the phone so long that I was practically begging her to let me come here just to shut her up.”  Tina wanted to laugh but was still scared out of her mind.  “Besides you’re aunts had a turn with me as well and let’s just say that they’re not shy about letting me know when I’m being pig headed. But you know I have to see things with my own eyes, so don’t get ahead of yourself.”  Tina looked toward the door and as if on cue, her aunts walked in smiling.
