Someone to Watch over Me – 4

One Friday afternoon Tina finally got the nerve to ask Bette to join her and her friends at the Grotto.  Bette tried to beg off, but was finally convinced after much beseeching.  They agreed to go together, and Tina parted with the joy of being able to see Bette twice in one day.  When she picked Bette up that night, she restrained herself, barely, from gasping at the sight of Bette in evening clothes.  She’d changed into a simple, low cut black dress, heels and glittering jewelry that rested beautifully against her dark hair and skin.  Tina’s smile was telling as she stared at her.

                “You look… amazing.”

“Thanks,” Bette giggled nervously.  “You’re not so bad yourself.”

For once, there was tension between them, as if they acknowledged that this night together was different, that it meant more than all the lunches put together, though they never voiced such a thought.  They pulled up and got out of the car, Bette taking Tina’s arm and holding her back before they went in.

                “I’m nervous.”

“Don’t be.  You have nothing to be nervous about.”

“These are your friends, ones you’ve known longer than you’ve known me.  What if they don’t like me?”

For just a moment, Tina’s defenses broke down as she tucked a strand of hair behind Bette’s ear and said,  “Not possible.”  Bette returned the smile, and, if Tina didn’t know better, she seemed to lean slightly into her hand.

                “Thanks.  Let’s go.”

And so they entered the Grotto arm in arm, to the strains of “I Couldn’t Sleep a Wink Last Night.”  Tina’s friends ogled them as they approached, jumping to conclusions.  Their suspicions were seemingly confirmed as Bette watched Tina as she talked and continued her customary touches.  It wasn’t until Bette excused herself to the ladies room that the questions and accusations at having kept Bette a secret erupted.

“There’s no secret to keep.  She works at the college; we’re just friends.  Good friends.”

“Yeah right, Kennard, spill it!  Is this why you’ve been so eerily cheery lately and didn’t go home with the last one we tried to set you up with?”

“Guys, honestly, there’s nothing there.  Let it go.”

“Her eyes aren’t saying friendship.  And if she sits any closer to you she’ll be in your lap.  Or maybe she’s already been there…”

“Knock it off!  Don’t say things like that!  Look, I really like her, ok, but that’s it.  She’s not interested and never will be, so can we just leave it at that?”

                “Have you asked her?”

                “Asked her what?”

                “If she’s interested?”

                “No.”

                “Why?”

                “Well, for one, she’s straight.”

“Yeah, most people are until they’re not.  Just hear me out.  It looks like more.  The two of you act as if it’s more.  At the very least can you ask her to dance?”

                “Maybe.  I’ll think about it.”

As Bette sat down upon her return, she squeezed Tina’s shoulder, causing the group to exchange knowing looks.  Tina got up to get the next round of drinks, and her friends used the opportunity to do a little investigating of their own.

“So, Bette, how did the two of you meet?”

They watched her as she told the story in great detail, down to what Tina had been wearing and what they’d talked about.  Her eyes flashed, and her whole body became involved in the telling.  Small smiles appeared on the group’s faces.  This woman wasn’t telling about the start of a beautiful friendship, but a love affair, whether she and Tina knew it or not.  The tenderness with which she spoke Tina’s name was palpable, and it warmed them to see how deep the emotion unconsciously ran.

Tina finally returned and passed around the drinks, sitting and easily resting her arm along the back of Bette’s chair.  She visibly came to a moment of resolve, taking a steadying gulp of her drink as “Someone to Watch over Me” began to play.

“God, I love this song,” Tina sighed, glancing at Bette out of the corner of her eye.  Bette turned and smiled at her.

“Me too.”  Tina stood and charmingly offered a hand.

                “Shall we?”

“It would be my pleasure,” grinned Bette.

    1. I love how you have their roles reversed…Tina being gay and Bette being straight…well probably not for much longer by the way she is acting towards Tina. Get home safely and post another chapter when you can because we aren’t going anywhere. Thanks NY…just love this story.

    2. My mistake. It was TINA who said she was really gay. I’m so used to volleying dialogue without indication as to who said what that I assumed Bette said two things back to back. Lack of indicators that make me think someone said something they didn’t is a BIG writing/reading pet peeve of time. So far I don’t see that with your writing.

    3. I’m with superdaddy. I thought Bette said she was really gay. Time to go back and look. Anyway this is really a cute story. This is one time I wish the chapters were longer. ;)

    4. Hey NY, I finally caught up and really love this story. Great job. It’s too short darnit! but i’ll live! I like how you’re slowly developing the tension between these two. Good job!

    5. Lami, Lami, Lami… PAY ATTENTION, WOMAN!!! LOL… Yeah, I was gonna ask you if it was an established fact that Bette was straight, or if it was just a false assumption on Tina’s part since Bette didn’t say anything. On the other hand, you did mention that they had talked about past dates, and I would assume that some pronouns would have been spoken at the time, leading Tina to assume that Bette was indeed straight… Anyhow I agree that a girl is staight until she’s not, and we’ll just have to wait and see… Thanks for the post!
