Chapter 33.

Tina didn’t sleep much after Bette left her to go to college. She dozed for another hour before she decided that for once her mother was her priority for the day and with not having to go to work she would hunt her down and talk to her.
Tina’s first trip was to the office – as soon as she got out of the lift she knew that the subject of her parents split was one that everyone was talking about. The simple walk to Emma’s office was difficult because of how many people just stood and stared at her. She wasn’t in the mood to talk which was just as well seeing as no one seemed to be able to bring themselves to speak to her.
Jane — her mother’s secretary was in her outer office. She smiled at Tina when she walked in
“Hey Tina”
“Hello Jane “
There was no nonsense about Jane – there couldn’t be when you were PA to Emma Kennard. She was one of the few people who stood up to Emma and lived to tell the tale. Jane put her pen down and looked at the blonde she had watched growing up.
“If you are looking for either of them – they aren’t in”
“I knew Kate wasn’t – I was just checking on Emma. What do you know Jane ?”
“That I have never seen her cry like I saw her cry yesterday. I have seen the tears of rage when she loses and I have seen the tears of frustration when she is working too hard. Hell I even remember the tears of pride when she came in to show us all the beautiful blonde little girl she had just given birth to”
Tina blushed
“But I have never seen her hurting like yesterday – god Tina – I just never thought I would see it – and she was going over to tell you – that must have been bloody”
“It was “ Tina trusted Jane  – she had known her all her life –  this  woman was a constant in her mother’s life . Jane wouldn’t betray Emma  – and that was something that her mother was going to need.
“What happened ? – sorry -I know its none of my business”
“It affects you “ Tina said and sat down in a chair. Jane came round and sat beside her.
“I know she’s can be difficult and I would be blind and dumb to know that she and you haven’t been getting on well since you came back from Harvard “
“Its been horrible since I came back and I have barely spoken to her. She doesn’t like who I am dating, the fact that I haven’t joined the firm or the fact that my new apartment is above my father’s restaurant – I cannot do anything that pleases her. But this” Tina swallowed “ This is out of the blue. Did you know ?”
“That Kate was seeing someone ?”
Tina nodded
“I knew they were fighting a lot but that is pretty much par for the course with anyone in Emma’s life – you included. But for the last month she has been really distant – very withdrawn. Looking back “ Jane sighed “Looking back I do think she knew a few weeks ago”
“Really ?”
“Its just a guess”
