    Santa Monica

    “Let’s play pinball.”

“Fine,” answered Tina as she looked for a video pinball game.

Tina had been thoroughly thrashing Bette at the video arcade at Santa Monica and knew she could continue her upper hand with pinball video.

But Bette led Tina away from the videos to an area that had real pinball machines. Bette was good at this and knew she could take Tina down a peg. Sure enough, Bette bested Tina on all the pinball matches.

“Ok,” said Tina grumpily, “that’s enough.” And began to walk away.

Bette caught up with her. “You were always a sore loser,” said Bette grinning.

Tina stopped walking and looked at Bette seriously. “And I was the sorest loser when I lost you.”

“Tina, I didn’t’ mean that.” Bette’s face was now serious, too.

“Let’s forget it,” said Tina changing the pace kindly, “and ride on the carousel.”

They rode on side by side horses on the carousel and dismounted smiling.

“We should go to the horse farm some Saturday with Red and Melissa,” suggested Bette.

    “We’ll do it.”

“I’m enjoying these ‘Getting to know you’ dates,” Bette confessed at lunch and Tina nodded in agreement.

“Bette, I love these arcades and kid things like merry-go-rounds. This was like the Wright house for me.”

Bette grinned because she knew how much Tina loved “kid” things. She also loved to shop, and window shop and people watch. Bette, on the other hand, liked “educational” things like the Frank Lloyd Wright house or a good movie, but this date was for Tina and Bette was enjoying watching Tina’s joy.

“Did I ever tell you that I worked in a college production of The King and I?

“I never much liked the ‘Getting to Know You’ song until we began these dates,” Tina continued.

“It seems to make more sense than it did in the musical,” Bette agreed and chuckled.

“The most popular song was “Shall We Dance?’” Tina revealed. “It always got enough applause for an encore and I realized for the first time that having the encore for the most popular stuff was scripted and rehearsed.”

“Do you suppose we have an encore?” Asked Bette reflectively.

“I want many encores with you,” Tina said softly.

    1. Glad to see you post, pancha, as always. I never knew Bette was a pinball wizard, but I did suspect she had a supple wrist. This was a sweet little chapter, much like their reminiscences.

    2. Supple wrist, indeed. How do you think she does it? I don’t know. This was such a sweet chapter. I too enjoy kid stuff like Tina. Anyone I date has to enjoy amusement parks and stuff like that.

    3. Hey I like to go to the Thrift stores and Goodwill juat to look and wonder who worn what and why did they give a beautiful piece of furniture away. So I guess we all are dreamer. They were people watching and day dreaming. So sweet thanks

    4. With a little more of a push and they would be ready for more than just a kiss. This dating thing is really helping them to get to know one another and remind them of what they liked about each other.

    5. Taking it slow this time around is got to be one of the best ideas I’ve heard of lately. They love each other without a doubt, they just need time to get through all the rest of the B.S.
