    Chapter 3 – Collision Course

    A few days later…

Alice and Shane occupy their usual table at The Planet. Shane is going on about the latest on her new roommate Mark and his camera. Dana appears at the table and plops down looking completely exhausted.

“Well good morning Miss Fairbanks.” Shane says smiling at her worn out looking friend. “Long night?” She continues.

Alice cringes and tries to hide her disgust at the thought behind her coffee cup. Last thing she wants to hear about are Dana and Lara’s sexcapades.

Dana shoots Shane one of her patented dirty looks. “No, my coach just worked me really hard. And I haven’t been sleeping real well.”

Alice can’t help it, “Well, tell the Chef to quit bugging you.”

Dana can’t take it and tells them. “She’s gone Al.”

    “Wait! What?” Shane quickly says.

“She got the job she wanted in Chicago. She left me a message the other night and got on a plane.” Dana can’t help but sound a little sad. She had wanted to tell Alice in person and alone but she still wasn’t returning her calls.

“Just like that? No goodbye, nothing?” Alice says.

“Yeah, just like that.” Dana says looking into her eyes.

“Wow, that’s deep Dane. I’m really sorry.” Shane says with a complete understanding of the sudden goodbye.

“Thanks.” Dana says with a knowing smile at Shane.

Alice reaches across the table resting her hand on Dana’s. “Are you ok?”

“Yeah, actually I am.” Dana says squeezing Alice’s hand happy to have it touching her once again.

“Maybe I should give you two some time alone.” Shane says starting to get up.

“No no stay.” Dana and Alice say simultaneously.

“You want some coffee? I know I could use some more.” Alice asks Dana.

“That would be great, thanks.” Dana smiles at her not wanting to let go of her hand.

    “Shane?” Alice asks standing up.

    “No thanks, I’m good.”

Taking advantage of her in with the owner, who is standing behind the counter, Alice makes her way to the front of the line. When she reaches it she catches Kit’s attention and requests a refill and Dana’s usual. Alice turns to lean against the counter and immediately sees Harper paying for her tea.
