Shane and Molly: A Love Story – Chapter 13

The following morning, Shane awakens to find that Molly is already up. After rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she gets up, pulls on the clothes that she was wearing yesterday and heads out to the kitchen for some coffee.
“Morning,” Molly says, cheerfully, as she leafs through another bridal magazine.
“Mornin’,” Shane replies, groggily, as she pours her coffee. She gives Molly a quick kiss on the top of her head, as she takes the seat next to her and asks, “Where’s Shay?”
“Out back with Bella,” Molly replies, her eyes still glued to the magazine.
“Whatcha lookin’ at?” Shane asks, as she pushes Molly’s magazine down.
“Oh, sorry,” Molly says, chuckling. “Just some wedding dresses,” she says, as she takes a sip of Shane’s coffee.
“I thought your mom already found her dress.”
“Oh, well, um, yeah, she did,” Molly says, quickly, somewhat embarrassed.
With her mug just about to her lips, Shane asks, “Did you see something you liked?”
Surprised, Molly stammers, “Uh, um, yeah, yeah, I did, actually.”
“Can I see?” Shane asks, sliding the magazine across the table. Molly reaches over and begins to flip through the pages, but Shane stops her. “Wait, let me figure it out.” Shane carefully studies each page of gowns, making faces at some and smiling at others. She comes across a sleek, white, plain, satin frock and a huge grin spreads across her face. Pointing to the dress, she says, “That one, right?”
Molly returns Shane’s smile and says, “Yeah. But how’d you know?”
“When I picture our wedding, that’s what you’re wearing,” Shane says, confidently. She takes a sip of her coffee, her eyes still trained on Molly.
        “Our wedding?” Molly asks, surprised.
“Well, yeah. I mean, maybe, someday, right?” Shane says, a little less confidently.
Just as Molly is about to answer, Shay comes busting through the door, covered in mud, closely followed by Bella, who is even more covered in mud.
“Fuck! Shay! What the hell did you guys do out there?” Shane says jumping up and grabbing Bella before she has the chance to run through the house.
“Uh, nothing,” Shay says, shrugging his shoulders.
Molly laughs, causing Shane to shoot her a look of exasperation. She hands Bella to her and says, “Go hose her off. I’ll take care of this one and the floor.” Molly drags Bella back out of the house to clean her up. Meanwhile, Shane asks Shay to remove his shoes and clothes and to get in the shower.
As Shay is removing his shoes, he looks at the table and sees the wedding magazine. “Shane, can I ask you something?”
“Yeah, sure,” Shane says, as she begins wiping the floor with a paper towel.
“Are you and Molly ever going to get married like Mom and Dad and Phyllis and Joyce?”
Shocked by Shay’s question, Shane stops scrubbing the floor and slowly turns her head to look at Shay. “I don’t know. Maybe. Someday.” She pauses for a moment, afraid to ask the next question, but does so anyway. “Why? Would you be okay with it if we ever did?”
Shay replies, as he kicks off his shoes and pants, “Yeah. I love Molly. And I know you do, too. I think it’d be great.” He pulls off his shirt, tosses it at Shane, and runs to the bathroom for his shower.
Stunned, Shane just stays there, kneeling on the floor. Eventually, a smile comes to her lips. She leans back down and continues to scrub the mud from the tile.
