Seducing Miss Kennard

Waterford, Vermont 2012

On a crisp, golden morning that hinted of autumn’s return Tina Kennard was in her porch just sitting enjoying the morning breeze; a thick blanket wrapped around her to protect her frail body from the cool weather. She had lived all of her 79 years in Waterford and never had the chance to see what was outside of this town but she had no regrets, for her Waterford was the most beautiful place in the world and there was no place she would rather be than where she was right now.

As her head and back were comfortably resting on the rocking chair while looking at her beautiful piece of property, her mind traveled back to what happened many years ago. It’s the memory that she loved to revisit occasionally especially now that fall was about to hit Vermont, for it was also the time when she felt alive the most.

“Grandma”

She turned to the direction where the voice was coming from and smiled when she saw her granddaughter Michelle walking towards her

“I brought you some tea”

Michelle sat on a chair beside her grandmother and gave the tea to the old woman “How come you are here outside, aren’t you feeling cold?”

She took a sip on her tea then gave the younger woman a smile “Child if you have a body like mine, believe me you’ll definitely feel cold” she chuckled

“Then how come you’re here?”

“I love sitting here every morning watching how the leaves begin to turn; with trees taking on golden, amber and scarlet hues, it just relaxes me”

Michelle smiled at what she heard “Well I couldn’t agree with you more grandma, that’s the reason why I also love going back here especially during this time of the year because this place it’s just beautiful!” she replied as her eyes feasted on the wonderful scenery before them

Tina took a deep breath.

Michelle sensed that something was kind of bothering the old woman “Grandma what’s wrong?”

“Nothing”

Michelle took a deep breath too “Grandma…”

“Hmmm?”

“Mom told me that you’ve never left this place. I mean don’t get me wrong this place is totally awesome but I just wonder why you never tried at least going to a nearby town for a day’s trip or you going with grandpa for a vacation to a different city or state perhaps?”
