    Sant-il-Khadra (A Year of Good Fortune) – Chapter 4: Long lost…

Shane gave him a questioning look.  She had dealt with the police many times in her younger years, but never had a cop been so vague with her.  "Um, no.  I was an only child.  Look if you don’t mind it’s late and…" He cut her off.  "Shane, I think there is something you should know.  The officer who just came up to talk to me…"  They were interrupted again by a knock on the door.  Another young officer stood outside looking timid.  Ben motioned for him to come in.  The young man stepped into the room and nodded his head.  "There’s someone here to see a… a Shane McCutcheon.  Her name’s Jenny Schecter.  She says she’s a roommate."  Ben sighed.  "We’ll be down in a minute."  The officer left and disappeared down the hallway.  Ben looked back at Shane and closed the file on the desk.  He picked it up and stood.  "Why don’t we go find your friend and then we can come back up here and finish up.  Okay?"  Shane nodded.
The two walked back down the hall and descended the stairs together, walking into the lobby to see Jenny sitting uncomfortably on a bench.  Jenny rose and walked over to Shane with a relived look on her face.  "Hey lady, there you are.  I was really worried about you when I got your message."  Shane nodded.  After the events of the past few months, it felt relieving to know that Jenny would show up at a moments notice if needed.  It reaffirmed their friendship in a way, considering everything that had happened.  Shane smiled.  "Hey… thanks for coming."  Jenny nodded.  "Ya.  What is going on anyway?  When you left that message I got really worried."  Shane shrugged motioned to Ben.  "Detective Nguyen thought I could help with an something but I’m afraid I wasn’t much help.  I think he was just ready to let me go actually."  She looked over at the detective who shifted uncomfortably.  He tugged at his tie.  "Actually I have something I need to speak to you about.  I am not sure if you are aware but…"
Before Ben could finish, a door slammed open behind them, and the sound of running and shouting filled the room.  Someone screamed from back down the hall.  "HEY!  SOMEONE STOP THAT KID!"  A bolt of blue jean and tattered t-shirt flew past the three, headed for the front door.  There was a deafening commotion of officers clambered after the kid headed for the front door.  The cranky officer Jenny had dealt with before jumped over the divide of his desk and dove into the running figure just before it reached the door.  The figure flailed beneath him, struggling to break free, leaping up and tugging desperately at it’s restraints.  Three more offices grabbed various limbs, restraining the person in midair.  In the commotion, the trashing figure was, once again, pinned to the floor.  One officer put a foot on it’s back and began placing cuff’s around the tiny wrists of the juvenile.  Once this had been accomplished the person was dragged, kicking and wiggling to a standing position.  The body was turned around to face the group, suddenly, and a mop of scruffy blond curls was pulled back to reveal the face of a young teenage girl.  Shane stopped dead in her tracks when the girls eye’s met hers.  "Mom?"
