Chapter Nineteen

Alice remained silent for a moment, she was confused, utterly confused.

Alice: “Um, your saying you didn’t go to Pittsburgh?” she looked at Ben not know what to say next.

Bette: “No, I didn’t make it. I got a earlier flight..”

Alice: “Oh, now I get it.” she butted in

Bette: “What?”

Alice: “Nothing, what happened?”

Bette: “Well I left late last night and I had a layover in Chicago, but that’s as far as I got. Seems there is some giant storm hovering over the Midwest and is now heading east. I should call Kit.” he mind began to wonder.

Alice: “So you never made it to Pittsburgh?”

Bette: “Are you even listening to me Al? My flight was canceled, I was stuck in the airport for hours. I came home. I can make that trip another time.”

Alice: “Of course” she laughed.

Alice couldn’t believe her ears.

Bette: “What is so funny?”

Alice: “Bette. Now don’t freak out when I tell you this. Tina’s in Pittsburgh right now looking for you” she held the phone out waiting for Bette’s reaction

Bette: “Don’t mess with me Alice, im too tired right now”

Alice: “Im serious Bette. She called me this morning freaking out cause she couldn’t find you.”

Bette: “I don’t understand”

Bette couldn’t figure out why on earth Tina would fly across the country looking for her when she seemed to be having so much fun on her date the night before.

Alice: “Well understand it. If you would have stuck around for another minute last night you would have seen that the guy sitting at the table with Tina was Ben’s friend.”

Bette felt like an idiot, but why had Tina been avoiding her all week, she wondered. And what did Tina flying out to find her mean.

Bette: “Did she say where she was staying?”

Alice: “No I don’t think so. Wow Bette your life is truly a soap opera”

Bette hung up the phone and noticed the answering machine blinking. She walked over and pressed play. Bette stood there silently listening to Tina’s heart felt message then she sat down and rested her tired head against the back of the chair. She had been so overwhelmed with emotion she neglected to realize the problem at hand, Tina was stuck almost three thousand miles away.
