Put it up to your ear…what do you hear? Chapter 2

It had been six long months since Bette lost her chance for happiness. At least, that’s how she thought about it…she believed, that when she left behind her lucky seashell on the beach that day, she had also left behind her chance for happiness. And, as she struggled to come to terms with what that meant, her family was doing absolutely nothing to help convince her otherwise.

Her big sister Kit, whose soft, comforting arms, had always given her a place of refuge, had decided that she was no longer able to live with The Laws for a Successful Life, as passed down by Melvin Porter, and had left in the middle of the night, with her boyfriend.

And now, only two weeks later, Bette’s own mother, had used that departure to instill in her the fortitude that she so desperately had been seeking, and that she would surly need, in order to leave her marriage. A marriage, that over the last several years, had slowly, but steadily turned painfully lonely…to the point of being unbearable. She was sure that whoever had made the statement, “you won’t be alone, but you’ll still get lonely,” was looking directly into her heart, when they made that observation.

However, no matter how painful her marriage had become, it would never compare to the pain of leaving her only child behind. But, because she had married Melvin Porter, she believed she had no choice. As it was, when she looked in the mirror, she only saw faint whispers of her former self. She had to go. If she stayed, she would lose herself completely, and then would be of no use to either herself, or her daughter. Knowing his wife was preparing to leave, Melvin made it very clear that if she attempted to take Bette with her, he would sue for custody on the grounds that she was an unfit mother. And, even though there wasn’t an ounce of truth in that, Katherine Porter knew that Melvin and his family had the means, and the connections to pull it off, as well as anything else they decided to throw in. So, with both their hearts breaking, she too left the ten year old little girl, who now had only one person left, to supply her with all the love her torn, and wounded heart needed.

    1. Aw sucks, Sea, you have done it again. A truly marvelous and endearing tale without any soppiness. Can’t wait to see how this story develops. It is really interesting to get an idea of the events that shaped both Bette and Tina and made them into the women they are today. This explains a lot. Thanks again for another awesome chapter. Please post soon.
