Provocations Linger- Chapter 12
Cherry Lane, 2am
Walking Home
“So what’s this Sam woman like? Does Tina appear happy? Is she in love?” Helena interrupted Bette from her own thoughts.
The street was dark and silent and the air was still, just a touch of humidity warmed them.
“Helena, I spent an hour with them together, tops. How am I supposed to know?”
“Oh I don’t know, Bette. I’m thinking you know perfectly well if Tina is in love with Sam or not. Actually I would guess that you are very sure she is NOT in love with her.”
“Oh really. And how is that, Helena?” Bette gave her an annoyed look.
Ignoring her, Helena persisted, “Are you telling me you can’t tell when Tina looks at a woman if she’s in love with her? You can’t tell by how they communicate and interact together?”
Bette didn’t say anything, suddenly preoccupied with the beautiful brownstones lining Commerce Street. They were approaching Helena’s house.
“Ah-hah!” Helena chuckled. “I’m right.”
“Shussssh, you’ll wake your neighbors,” Bette warned. She attempted to ignore the flutter she felt as she considered Helena’s statement.
Tina wasn’t in love with Sam. She may very well love her, but she wasn’t ‘in love’ with her. Bette recognized the truth of that as soon as she gave it some thought.
“She cares for her very much,” she told Helena quietly.
Helena turned and listened.
“She respects her,” Bette added. The other brunette nodded her encouragement, “But?”
“But she’s not, she is definitely not in love with her.” Bette concluded, her voice reflecting relief and certainty.
Helena beamed at her new friend. “I’m glad for you.”
“For me?” Bette spoke cautiously. “I’m not sure why that would help me.”
“Well it wouldn’t help much if she did.” Helena pointed out dryly. “Ah. Home again, home again, trittity trot.”
“Trittity trot,’ repeated Bette absently. “Helena, why were you so sure I didn’t think Tina was in love with Sam?”
Helena stopped mid turn key, giving Bette a knowing smile. “I doubt Tina has left your thoughts since you arrived.”
Bette blushed, not bothering to deny it.
“Yet your mood on the subject seems to alternate between anxiety and fascination.”
Helena pushed the door open, inviting Bette to enter with a nod. Upon entering Bette turned expectantly, waiting for the Brit to continue.

This is such a good story. I always look for the updates. Thanks for posting as you can – I am always pleased to see a new post when you have time to write.
How to answer that? And is Tina ready for that kind of exclusivity with Sam? I don’t think she is… The party at Fire Island is going to be interesting, isn’t it? Post soon, Zuzu. Thanks
missed this story and im loving the pace of it too, please don’t take as long to post the next chapter!!
You have too much talent not to post more frequently but I know life gets in the way. What an awesome chapter w/spot on dialogue.
Tina under pressure that’s not something I would want to see if I were Sam. I think she will explode and Sam will be the one in small pieces. PPS
Glad you’re writing here again since I also read until 3 a. m. and love this story.
Wow, great chapter. I love this story. I wonder how Tina will answer Sam’s question. Please update soon!
Great chapter! I love your Helena, she’s such fun and a good friend. Nudging Bette to see Tina in her work element and in a different light was perfect. I like Sam, here and in the series. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

It seems everyone is playing matchmaker and Sam is beginning to feel the uncertain ground. Hopefully Fire Island will bring some clarity to the “blind” women and get them talking.
Ohhhhh, I love, love, love this story. I read the whole thing thru this morning. Please post soon!!!
Oh boy, Sam just stepped backwards into her own stuff. Tina will never agree to that and I think Sam knows it. Let’s see what happens next.
I love this story and I love your superb writing
Glad that you are back. Maybe this is a good time for Tina to move onto another person like Bette. I have a feeling that some feathers are going to be ruffled by the end of the night.
This was good. I will have to go back and read the other 11 chapters.
